YouTube does not prescribe one. Set a cycle that fits your programming, then use average view duration and audience-retention patterns from your own channel to decide whether to change it.
Why there is no single best repeat interval
A playlist’s total cycle length determines how soon a returning viewer encounters material again. But a longer cycle is not automatically better: duration alone does not establish whether viewers will stay, and continuous availability does not guarantee views or retention. YouTube’s published analytics guidance provides ways to evaluate performance, not a recommended loop duration. YouTube’s live-stream metrics guidance and Content tab tips for live streams do not set an optimal repeat interval.
Choose a cycle based on the material and the experience you want to offer, then treat the schedule as something to evaluate—not a growth formula. Variety, ordering, transitions, viewer interests, traffic sources, and other changes can all affect performance.
What to measure
Average view duration
YouTube defines average view duration for a live stream as the estimated average minutes watched per view. It is a useful measure of how long people watch on average, but it does not by itself reveal why they leave or prove that a playlist change caused a difference. YouTube notes that viewing time over time can help show changes in audience interests.

Audience-retention patterns
Review retention information and key moments where available. Look for recurring changes around particular sections or transitions, rather than assuming the loop interval itself is the cause. A drop near one transition may point to that segment or its placement; it is a clue to investigate, not proof.
Context for interpreting results
Use concurrent viewers and total watch time alongside retention and average view duration. Also consider traffic sources, playback locations, devices, and whether the content itself changed. YouTube frames performance through appeal, engagement, and satisfaction; average view duration is its satisfaction signal in that framework. Compare the same type of content because audience behavior can differ across formats.

How to test a playlist cycle
- Record the current setup. Note the playlist items, their order, the total cycle length, and when you made the change. Keep track of other programming or stream changes that could affect the comparison.
- Check the complete loop. Watch the first full playlist cycle, including each transition and the return from the final item to the first. Confirm that the sequence behaves as intended and that there are no unwanted gaps or abrupt changes. This is an operational check, not a retention benchmark.
- Review comparable periods. Compare average view duration and retention trends over comparable time windows, with similar content where possible. A before-and-after comparison is only suggestive if traffic, content, seasonality, or other conditions also changed.
- Change one variable when practical. Test cycle length or ordering separately when feasible. Make a note of what changed, then review the same metrics again. This is a way to make your own comparison easier to interpret, not an official YouTube requirement or a proven causal formula.
- Keep, revise, or revert based on the evidence. If the result is unclear, avoid claiming that a particular cycle works best. Gather more comparable observations or restore the previous schedule before testing a different change.
Check the stream as well as the schedule
A 24/7 pre-recorded live stream sends prepared media through an encoder in sequence. You can run that workflow locally, with the computer and network kept in the chain, or use a cloud service configured to send uploaded files. After launch and after playlist changes, monitor stream health as well as the viewing metrics: a well-chosen cycle cannot help viewers if the broadcast stops or transitions fail.
