Use Puppeteer to set the page viewport before navigation, then call page.screenshot({ fullPage: true }). The viewport controls the page’s rendered layout; fullPage asks Puppeteer to capture beyond the viewport height. Chrome’s --window-size flag sets a window size, but its documented --screenshot option is not a dedicated full-page capture control.
Use Puppeteer for a full-page capture at a fixed viewport
Install Puppeteer in a Node.js project, then save the following as an ES module, such as capture.mjs. Replace the example URL and viewport dimensions as needed.

}Run it with node capture.mjs. Puppeteer infers the screenshot type from the file extension, so full.png produces a PNG. Its documented API includes a fullPage option for capturing the full page and setViewport() for setting the page viewport. Puppeteer screenshot API; Puppeteer viewport API.
Why the viewport stays fixed while the image gets taller
width and height set the viewport used to render the page. With fullPage: true, the resulting screenshot can extend below that viewport to include the full page. In practice, this lets you preserve a chosen responsive layout width while capturing a long page.

Set the viewport before opening the URL
Call setViewport() before goto(). Puppeteer recommends this order because some sites respond to viewport changes; changing viewport properties after navigation can also cause a reload in some cases. Choose dimensions that represent the layout you want to capture, not necessarily your computer monitor.
Choose a readiness condition that suits the page
The example uses waitUntil: 'networkidle2', which is the navigation wait condition shown in Puppeteer’s screenshot guide. It is a starting point, not a guarantee that every page is visually ready: a page may load important content after navigation or keep network requests active. For those sites, wait for an application-specific selector or other known readiness signal before taking the screenshot. Puppeteer screenshot guide.

Full-page captures also deserve a visual check when a page uses lazy-loaded images, sticky headers, or animation. These behaviors can affect what appears in a capture, so confirm the output against the target page rather than assuming one wait condition handles every site.
When Chrome’s command line is enough
For a quick screenshot at a chosen window size, Chrome documents a headless command such as:

The CLI’s --timeout option sets a maximum wait before capture, even if loading has not finished. A timeout can therefore produce an image of a page that is still incomplete; it is not a substitute for checking that the content you need has rendered.
Common problems and practical fixes
- The result only shows the initial viewport: confirm you are using Puppeteer’s
page.screenshot({ path: 'full.png', fullPage: true }). Chrome’s documented CLI screenshot flags do not specify a full-page mode. - The layout has the wrong responsive breakpoint: set the intended viewport width before navigation. A different width can make the site render a different layout.
- The screenshot is missing late or lazy-loaded content: use a readiness condition tied to the page, and inspect whether content appears only after scrolling or another interaction. The general
networkidle2example is not universal. - The CLI screenshot is incomplete: the page may still have been loading when the command captured it. Review the chosen timeout and use a scripted readiness check when a specific element must be present.
- The page reloads after a viewport change: configure viewport properties before navigation, especially when changing mobile or touch-related settings.

The Puppeteer API documentation search result identified version 25.12.0 on October 3, 2026. Chrome command-line behavior and Puppeteer APIs can vary by release; if a production capture behaves differently, check the documentation for the versions you have installed. The examples above apply documented APIs and are not a report of a page-specific test.
