Capture a full page and save it to a file
Install Playwright and its browser binaries in your project, then run this Node.js example. It uses Chromium and saves a PNG named screenshot.png in the current working directory.

})();The essential setting is fullPage: true. Without it, page.screenshot() captures only the viewport. The path option writes the image to disk; omit it if you want the returned buffer for further processing.
Choose an image format and pixel scale
Playwright supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP output. PNG is the default. Select a format and scale based on whether you value lossless output, smaller files, or pixel density.

Full-page capture does not itself guarantee that a page’s content has finished loading or stopped changing. Use the target site’s actual readiness condition when completeness matters; there is no universal wait that is correct for every application.

Control animations and the caret
Set animations: 'disabled' to fast-forward finite animations to completion and cancel infinite animations at their initial state during capture; animations are resumed afterward. The default is allow. The caret is hidden by default; set caret: 'hide' explicitly when documenting your capture settings.
Apply temporary CSS or mask changing regions
The style option applies CSS during screenshot capture. Playwright documents that this stylesheet pierces Shadow DOM and applies to inner frames, so it can hide or alter dynamic elements across those boundaries. Use mask to cover matching locator boxes, and maskColor to choose the overlay color; the default mask color is pink.

omitBackground: true hides the default white background to allow transparency. This option does not apply to JPEG.
Use Playwright Test when screenshots belong to a test run
Playwright Test supports screenshot configuration modes such as on and only-on-failure, and it also offers a fullPage screenshot setting. For a specifically named file or custom handling inside a test, call page.screenshot() directly; it returns a buffer that can be attached through the test API.

Troubleshoot common capture problems
- The screenshot contains only the visible area: pass
fullPage: truetopage.screenshot(). - No image file appears: provide a
path. Without it, the method returns a buffer rather than saving to disk. - The capture includes unfinished or lazy-loaded content: wait for the page-specific condition that signals the needed content is ready. A fixed delay is not a universal solution.
- The image is unexpectedly large: check
scale. The defaultdevicescale can produce more pixels thancss. - A JPEG capture does not accept transparency: transparency via
omitBackgrounddoes not apply to JPEG; choose a suitable non-JPEG format if transparency is required. - Output differs across browser setups: confirm the installed Playwright version and browser compatibility for the project. The documented full-page behavior does not establish identical results across every browser or version.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does fullPage: true set a documented maximum screenshot height?
The reviewed Playwright Page API documentation does not specify a numeric maximum height. Results for exceptionally tall pages can depend on the browser and Playwright version in use.
Can Playwright return the screenshot without writing a file?
Yes. Call page.screenshot() without path; it returns a buffer.
