By default, that saves the visible viewport; use fullPage: true for the full scrollable page or a locator screenshot for one component.
Take a basic screenshot of a running React app
Start your React app using its usual development command, then point Playwright to the URL it serves. The example below assumes the app is available at http://localhost:3000; replace that URL and the heading selector with values for your project.
- Install Playwright in your project with
npm install -D playwright, then install its Chromium browser withnpx playwright install chromium. - Save the following as
screenshot.jsand keep the app running in another terminal. - Run

})();The heading wait is an example of an app-specific readiness signal, not a universal React hydration rule. Choose a selector that appears when the content you need is ready. If your site has no suitable heading, use a locator for a key component, such as page.locator('[data-testid="dashboard"]'), and wait for it.
The official Playwright Page API documents navigation and screenshot options. The example uses CommonJS; in an ES module, import Chromium with import { chromium } from 'playwright';.

Choose what to capture
Visible viewport
page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' }) captures the current viewport by default. Set the viewport before navigation if you need a predictable size:

Set fullPage: true to capture the page beyond the current viewport:

If the page loads images or sections only as you scroll, make sure those are loaded before capture; the screenshot option alone does not establish that your app’s lazy content is ready.

One component or region
Use a locator screenshot to save just the matched element, such as a navigation bar or card:

Set image format, dimensions, and appearance
The output filename extension selects the image format for supported image types, including PNG, JPEG, and WebP. The Page API also includes options for a clip region, JPEG quality, and background handling; check the current Page API reference for exact option behavior and defaults.

Screenshot scale determines whether dimensions correspond to CSS pixels or device pixels. Use scale: 'css' for one image pixel per CSS pixel; use scale: 'device' for device-pixel detail, which can make the image substantially larger on high-DPI displays.

A successful page.goto() means a navigation event occurred; it does not guarantee that the React content you care about has rendered or finished loading. Wait for a meaningful app signal before saving the image:

Its API describes networkidle as at least 500 ms without network connections and discourages it for testing. Arbitrary waitForTimeout() delays are for debugging, not a reliable readiness strategy: a fixed sleep can be too short on a slow run and unnecessarily long on a fast one. Use screenshots in visual regression tests
For a one-off file, page.screenshot() is enough. For a baseline that Playwright Test compares on later runs, use expect(page).toHaveScreenshot():

});Run the test once to create its reference screenshot; subsequent runs compare against it. The assertion waits for two consecutive page screenshots to match before comparing, which helps avoid capturing an actively changing frame. Keep the environment consistent when creating and checking baselines. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with host operating system, browser version and settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. A difference across environments is not automatically an application regression; generate and compare snapshots under the same browser and execution setup where possible. Troubleshoot common capture problems
- The page is blank or missing React content: confirm the app is running at the URL and port used by
page.goto(). Wait for a page-specific heading or component before capturing. - The screenshot is cut off: the default captures only the viewport. Add
fullPage: truefor a full-page capture. - The component screenshot is empty or wrong: check that the locator matches the intended element and that it is present before calling
screenshot(). - Images or asynchronous content are absent: wait for a meaningful element or state that indicates the relevant content has loaded; a completed navigation alone may not be enough.
- Visual tests fail only on another machine: compare browser version, operating system, viewport, headless mode, and other execution settings before treating the change as a site defect.
- Playwright cannot launch Chromium: install the browser binary for your setup with
npx playwright install chromium, then rerun the script.
