Amazon CloudFront can deliver a 24/7 video stream to viewers, but it does not encode raw footage or create a live channel by itself. You need an upstream source and encoder, then an origin or packager that produces playback-ready manifests and media segments. A typical AWS chain is source feed → AWS Elemental MediaLive → AWS Elemental MediaPackage or MediaStore → CloudFront → player. AWS also documents an HLS-focused MediaLive-to-S3-to-CloudFront reference solution.

What CloudFront does in a 24/7 streaming setup

CloudFront is the content delivery network (CDN) in the workflow: it distributes prepared video content to viewers. It is not the encoder. An encoder processes the source and creates playback-ready outputs; a packager or origin makes those outputs available for delivery. The video is divided into media segments, while manifests tell the player which segments to request and in what order.

Common streaming formats include HLS, DASH, Smooth Streaming, and CMAF. The components and CloudFront routing must match the formats your audience’s players need. AWS describes live delivery as content streamed in real time or set up as a 24×7 live channel in its CloudFront Developer Guide, under “Video on demand and live streaming video with CloudFront.”

Choose an AWS architecture for your formats and workflow

Pattern When it fits Important checks
MediaLive → MediaPackage → CloudFront You need MediaPackage to package outputs for multiple device formats or need additional packaging features such as DRM. Use the MediaPackage endpoints as CloudFront origins; route manifest and segment paths to the right endpoint; configure origin authorization. If using LL-HLS blocking playlist requests, forward the required manifest query strings.
MediaLive → MediaStore → CloudFront MediaLive already emits the formats your viewers need and you want MediaStore as the origin. Grant CloudFront access, set the MediaStore data endpoint and origin path, and choose caching behavior appropriate to the content and segment durations.
MediaLive → S3 → CloudFront reference solution You want AWS’s HLS-oriented reference architecture and CloudFormation deployment as a starting point. The documented solution emits adaptive-bitrate HLS and lists four source input types. It is described for use during a live event; confirm its defaults meet your continuous-channel failover and operational needs before using it as a 24/7 production design.

Compare options against required playback formats and devices, packaging or DRM needs, origin behavior, cacheability, latency target, authorization, redundancy, supported AWS Regions, operating effort, and expected cost. AWS documents these as architectural alternatives, not as a universal performance ranking.

Build a MediaLive, MediaPackage, and CloudFront workflow

  1. Prepare the source and MediaLive channel. Provide the upstream source input, configure the MediaLive channel’s output profiles, and start the channel. MediaLive ingests source content, transcodes it, and sends outputs downstream. Choose output profiles and bitrates for the audience and devices you intend to support; the AWS material cited here does not prescribe one bitrate or resolution for every channel.
  2. Create a MediaPackage channel and endpoints. Choose endpoints for the playback formats you need. MediaPackage can package adaptive-bitrate output into HLS, DASH, and CMAF.
  3. Create a CloudFront distribution with the correct origin. Enter the MediaPackage origin domain and endpoint path that correspond to the stream. AWS notes that a MediaPackage origin entered from another account must use HTTPS. If you add a wildcard path, make sure it routes somewhere; AWS describes using a dummy origin for unmatched paths so they are not inadvertently sent to a real origin.
  4. Add endpoint-specific cache behaviors. Route the actual manifest and segment paths to the correct endpoint. AWS examples separate HLS .m3u8 manifests from .ts segments; CMAF and DASH use their relevant manifest types and .mp4 segments. Match the behavior patterns to your endpoint and output format rather than applying HLS paths to DASH or CMAF.
  5. Set viewer protocol and caching policies. Use HTTPS for viewer delivery; AWS’s MediaStore procedure calls for redirecting viewer HTTP requests to HTTPS. Create cache policies suited to manifest and segment behavior. For MediaStore, AWS advises choosing a policy based on caching needs and segment durations.
  6. Configure low-latency HLS requests if applicable. When using LL-HLS blocking playlist requests, forward _HLS_msn and _HLS_part query strings on manifest requests. Without the relevant query strings reaching the origin, those requests may not behave as intended.
  7. Authorize CloudFront at the origin. Enable MediaPackage header-based CDN authorization so requests between the origin and CloudFront are authorized. Treat the authorization secret as sensitive and keep it out of client-facing configuration.
  8. Validate the complete path. Play the stream using the real player and device types you support. Check that manifests load, segments are returned, the chosen format plays correctly, and authorization and cache behavior match your design. Then test recovery and failover, monitor origin and CDN behavior, and estimate cost using the workload you expect.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live by looping uploaded recordings rather than to build an AWS delivery pipeline for your own playback service, StreamNeo is a different, simpler option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast a camera feed or replace CloudFront for delivering your own streams to viewers.

  • Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on; the stream runs from the cloud.
  • Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card required; it is one free day per account. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month.

Start your free StreamNeo day.

Plan for availability and regional support

A continuous channel needs more than a working CDN distribution: the source, encoder, packager or origin, CDN configuration, and player all have to function together. AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS architecture supports primary and secondary live streams through MediaLive and MediaPackage. MediaLive, MediaPackage, and MediaConnect are available only in specific AWS Regions. If MediaConnect flows are used as input, AWS says to deploy the solution in the same Region as those flows. Check current service availability and quotas for the intended Region before deployment.

This is a practical fault-isolation approach based on the roles AWS assigns to each component, not a guarantee that every incident will fit neatly into one layer.

Protect the origin and viewer connection

For MediaStore, AWS’s setup calls for redirecting viewer HTTP traffic to HTTPS. For MediaPackage, AWS recommends header-based CDN authorization between MediaPackage endpoints and CloudFront. In AWS’s reference architecture, deployment creates a CDN identifier and stores it in AWS Secrets Manager. Keep any authorization secret protected, and verify that the origin accepts the intended CloudFront requests rather than exposing an endpoint unintentionally.

Estimate the cost for your actual 24/7 workload

AWS’s deployment-planning guide gives examples for particular event scenarios, not a general 24/7 price. Its estimates use assumptions that include US-East-1 standard pricing and the highest bitrate for the example upper range; one scenario assumes a 99% cache/hit ratio between CloudFront and MediaPackage. That cache ratio is a scenario assumption, not a promised or guaranteed result. AWS also notes that QVBR and variable video complexity may reduce bandwidth and the estimate.

For a continuous channel, calculate with current AWS prices and your expected region, encoded profile and bitrate, viewer traffic, duration, and cache behavior. Do not annualize a live-event example as if it were a universal 24/7 quote. A 24/7 operating schedule changes delivery duration substantially, and the cited guide’s sample totals do not establish what a particular channel will pay.
