For a browser-native JavaScript dialog such as alert() or confirm(), register a dialog handler before triggering it. These are different Playwright mechanisms, and the screenshot should come only after the relevant dismissal has completed.
Dismiss the modal type the page actually uses
“Modal” can mean either a browser-native JavaScript dialog or an overlay built into the website. A native dialog is handled through the page’s dialog event; an in-page overlay is ordinary page content, so interact with its button or other control using a locator.
HTML or CSS overlay
With Playwright Test, locate the dialog and its actual close control, click it, and assert that the dialog is hidden before capture:

});Replace the example URL, role, accessible name, and action with those the page actually exposes. If the overlay lacks correct dialog markup, use a stable locator specific to the application. For consent notices, choose the intended action—such as “Reject” or “Accept”—rather than assuming a generic close button is appropriate. Playwright recommends locator-based interaction; page.click() is discouraged. See the Page API.

toBeHidden() is a Playwright Test assertion. In a plain Playwright script, wait on the locator’s hidden or detached state instead. Use the state your task requires, not an arbitrary sleep: a fixed delay does not establish that the overlay has gone away.
Native JavaScript dialog
For alert(), confirm(), prompt(), or a beforeunload confirmation, install a handler before the action that opens the dialog:

If no page or browser-context dialog listener is registered, Playwright automatically dismisses dialogs. Add a handler when the test needs to control or verify the decision. Keep screenshot tests stable
If the goal is to compare rendered output in Playwright Test, use toHaveScreenshot() rather than treating a one-off page.screenshot() save as a visual assertion. The screenshot assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing. That stabilization behavior belongs to the assertion workflow, not to ordinary screenshot saving.
For screenshot assertions, animation handling defaults to disabled: finite animations are fast-forwarded to completion, while infinite animations are canceled to their initial state and then played over after the screenshot. Screenshot APIs also expose animation options; check the API documentation for the installed Playwright version and method you use. See PageAssertions.

Troubleshoot a modal that will not dismiss
- The click times out or finds no button: confirm the overlay is visible and inspect its actual accessible role and button name. If it is not marked up as a dialog, use a stable, application-specific locator.
- The page hangs after clicking: if the click opens a native dialog, register a
dialoglistener before clicking and accept or dismiss the event. A listener that does not handle the dialog can stall the action. - The screenshot still contains the overlay: do not rely on a delay. Wait for the overlay to become hidden or detached, then capture.
- The consent choice is wrong for the test: target the specific intended action, such as reject or accept, instead of using an indiscriminate close action.
- A full-page image is unexpectedly tall: remove
fullPage: trueif you only need the viewport; keep it when the entire scrollable document is wanted.
