Capture multiple URLs with Playwright
Install Playwright and its Chromium browser, create the output directory, then save this script as capture.js. It uses one shared browser context, a fresh page for each target, and sequential processing so each page is closed before the next begins.

The script writes screenshots/example.png and screenshots/playwright.png. Replace the sample entries with your URLs and unique filename-safe names.
Choose the right context and page setup
Reuse one context for a shared session
A BrowserContext can contain multiple pages. Pages created in the same context share its session and context-level settings, such as viewport configuration. This is useful when the sites should use the same browser session. See Playwright’s pages documentation.

Use separate contexts for isolation
If captures must not share cookies or other session state, create a separate context for each independent session instead. BrowserContext is Playwright’s abstraction for an isolated browser session; see the BrowserContext API.
Choose what to capture and when
Viewport or full page
By default, page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' }) captures the current viewport. Set fullPage: true to capture the page’s full scrollable content. The Page screenshot API also supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP output; see the Page API.

Wait for the content your page needs
domcontentloaded waits for the document’s initial HTML to be parsed, but it may be too early for content populated asynchronously by JavaScript. When that happens, wait for a meaningful locator or application-specific signal before taking the screenshot. The Page API describes networkidle as discouraged for testing; prefer checking for the required page state rather than assuming that network activity has stopped.
Make captures more repeatable
For consistent output, keep the browser version, host operating system, viewport, and relevant context settings fixed. Playwright notes that screenshot rendering can vary with the host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Screenshot options also let you disable animations or inject screenshot-only styles to reduce visual noise from motion and volatile page elements. Scale the batch without overwhelming the browser
The sequential loop is straightforward to debug and limits resource contention. If you need more throughput, process a bounded number of pages or workers at a time rather than starting every URL simultaneously. Choose the limit based on available memory and the target sites’ rate limits; Playwright supports multiple pages in a context, but its documentation does not prescribe a universal safe concurrency limit.
Check HTTP errors and handle failures
page.goto() can return a response for an HTTP error such as 404 or 500 without throwing an exception. The example logs non-success responses, then still captures the resulting page. If those statuses should fail the batch, throw an error after checking response.ok(). Navigation can also throw for an invalid URL, timeout, SSL error, or unreachable site. The Page API documents navigation and screenshot behavior.

- No image appears: Confirm that the
screenshotsdirectory exists and that the script has write permission. - A capture is incomplete: The page may render important content after
domcontentloaded. Wait for the relevant locator or application signal before the screenshot. - A 404 or 500 image is saved: Inspect the navigation response and decide whether to skip the screenshot or treat the status as an error.
- Captures differ between runs: Fix the browser and host environment, viewport, and context settings; consider disabling animations or hiding volatile elements with screenshot-only styling.
- The batch runs out of memory or slows down: Return to sequential processing or reduce the number of simultaneous pages.
Use Playwright Test for visual regression
A call to page.screenshot() simply writes an image for inspection or downstream processing. For baseline-based visual assertions, Playwright Test offers expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(): it creates a reference screenshot on the first run and compares later runs. Frequently Asked Questions
Can I capture several URLs in the same Playwright BrowserContext?
Yes. A context can contain multiple pages, which can navigate to different URLs while sharing that context’s session and settings.
Does fullPage capture content that only loads after scrolling?
It captures the full scrollable page, but content that has not loaded yet may still be missing. Wait for the page’s lazy-loaded content to appear before taking the screenshot.
