To moderate YouTube Live Chat, set your held-message level, blocked words, and participation rules in YouTube Studio before the event; assign trusted moderators; then use message removal, timeouts, or hiding users as needed while live. YouTube’s filters can help, but they are not a substitute for human review.
Set up live-chat moderation before you go live
In YouTube Studio, open Settings → Community moderation → Content controls to configure the channel’s live-chat controls. You can also manage blocked words in the Studio app’s Content controls; those terms can apply to comments, live chat, and community posts, rather than only one event. Menu labels may change over time. The steps here reflect YouTube Help documentation accessed October 3, 2026. YouTube’s guide to moderating live chat and its moderation settings overview describe the available controls.
Choose a held-message level
- None: YouTube does not hold messages for review.
- Basic: YouTube holds messages it considers potentially inappropriate.
- Strict: YouTube holds a broader range of potentially inappropriate messages.
A held message stays hidden unless the channel owner or a moderator chooses to show it. If no one reviews it, it remains hidden. Filtering is imperfect: YouTube Help says, “No system is perfect, but this feature can make it easier for you to moderate live chat messages on your live stream.” Treat the review queue as assistance, not a guarantee that harmful messages will be caught or that every held message is harmful.
Add words you do not want in chat
Add channel-specific terms to the blocked words list in Content controls. YouTube says messages containing or closely matching a listed word are blocked. Because the Studio app’s controls can affect comments and community posts as well as live chat, consider the wider effect before adding a term. A block list is useful for recurring spam, slurs, or event-specific disruptions, but it cannot account for every spelling variation or context.

Choose who can participate
- Subscribers-only chat: restricts chat to subscribers; you can choose how long a person must have been subscribed. It can be used with slow mode.
- Members-only chat: restricts chat to channel members. It cannot be combined with subscribers-only chat.
- Live commentary: only approved users can send messages, though other viewers can see those messages. If no one is approved, the channel is the only approved sender.
Use the least restrictive mode that suits the event. A participation restriction can reduce disruption, but also prevents some viewers from joining the conversation.
Turn on slow mode if the chat is moving too quickly
Slow mode sets a waiting period between messages from each user. It can help moderators keep up without closing participation. The channel owner, moderators, and channel members are exempt from the delay. You can use it alongside subscribers-only chat.
You can turn live chat on or off after an event starts, but YouTube says live chat cannot be turned off on Premieres. Check the event type before relying on that control.

How do I add a moderator to YouTube live chat?
YouTube provides standard and managing moderator roles. Choose someone you trust, explain the channel’s rules and escalation preferences, and give only the scope of chat control they need. Moderator status remains until you remove the person. YouTube documents adding moderators from the YouTube app while live or by entering a channel URL in YouTube Studio’s moderator settings. A standard moderator is suited to handling individual messages and users. A managing moderator can also change live-chat controls, but is not a channel owner and does not gain access to Studio or Live Control Room.
Respond to problems while the stream is live
Use the lightest action that addresses the behavior, then escalate if it continues. The controls below have different effects; removing a message is not the same as hiding a user.

Remove a message
Remove a specific message when its content needs to come down. YouTube says deletion permanently removes the message and its replies.
Put someone in timeout
A timeout temporarily stops a participant from chatting. YouTube’s documented choices are 10 seconds, 1 minute, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 30 minutes, or 24 hours. Choose a duration proportionate to the behavior and your channel’s rules.

Hide a repeat offender
Hide a participant when they repeatedly disregard guidelines or warnings. Their messages and comments stop appearing to other viewers, and YouTube does not notify the person that they have been hidden. This affects that user’s visibility across the channel, rather than just taking down one message.

Review held messages
Open the held-message queue and choose whether each message should be shown or hidden. If nobody acts, the message remains hidden. When you are unsure, leaving it held avoids exposing it while you assess it.
Pause the feed and check context
On desktop, hold ALT (or Option on Mac) to pause the chat feed, point to a message, and open its available actions. YouTube’s Channel Activity can show public profile information, the user’s join date, subscriber count, up to 50 public chat messages from that stream, and counts of deleted messages, timeouts, and hides over the prior year. These are activity details, not a complete record of every private or deleted interaction.

A missing message may be held for review, match a blocked word, or be affected by the event’s participation rules. It may also be a viewer-side limitation rather than a moderator action. YouTube says live chat is available on watch pages, not in embedded players. Its viewer guidance also sets platform limits of up to 11 messages every 30 seconds and 200 characters per message; special characters, URLs, and HTML tags are not allowed. These are YouTube constraints, not settings an individual moderator can override. See YouTube’s live-stream viewer guidance.

- Check the queue: a message held by Basic or Strict moderation stays hidden until reviewed.
- Check channel controls: confirm the term is not on the blocked words list and the viewer meets the event’s subscriber, member, or approved-user requirement.
- Check where the viewer is watching: have them open the stream’s YouTube watch page if they are using an embedded player.
- Check message format and rate: ask them to shorten the message, remove a URL or HTML, avoid unsupported special characters, or wait before sending again.
What happens to chat after the stream?
Live chat itself is unavailable once the stream ends, though viewers can leave comments below the video. For archived streams, live chat replay is on by default and reproduces the chat alongside the video as it appeared live; you can disable replay for an archive. Review that setting if you do not want the conversation preserved in the replay. Deleting a Super Chat after the stream does not trigger a refund.
