Amazon CloudFront delivers live video to viewers; it does not encode or package a live feed. First, an encoder must turn the feed into video segments and manifests. An origin or packager then makes those files available, and a CloudFront distribution routes viewer requests to that origin. A typical AWS workflow uses MediaLive to encode, MediaPackage to package when needed, and CloudFront to deliver the result.

What CloudFront does in a live-streaming setup

CloudFront is the viewer-facing content delivery network (CDN), downstream of the live encoder and origin. AWS’s CloudFront Developer Guide says an encoder must package video before CloudFront can distribute it. Packaging produces media segments and a manifest that describes the segments and their playback order.

Common streaming formats include Apple HLS, MPEG DASH, Microsoft Smooth Streaming, and CMAF. The encoder and packaging workflow determine which formats and playback features are available; CloudFront distributes the resulting files rather than creating those formats itself.

Choose an encoder and origin workflow

Pick the upstream services based on whether your encoded output already matches the formats viewers need, or whether you need a packager to prepare additional formats or features.

Workflow component Use it for When it fits
MediaLive Real-time encoding of the live feed. Use it when the incoming source needs to be encoded into streaming outputs.
MediaPackage Packaging outputs for delivery formats and features. Useful when you need multiple output formats, broader device support, DRM, or MediaPackage manifest functions.
MediaStore A scalable origin for prepared media. A documented alternative when MediaLive already produces the formats required by viewers’ devices.

Not every deployment needs both MediaPackage and MediaStore. Choose the simplest origin and packaging path that meets the devices, formats, and playback features you actually support. AWS’s live MediaPackage instructions assume that the channel and endpoint already exist.

Configure CloudFront for the live output

  1. Prepare the feed upstream. Ingest the source and configure the encoder to produce the required live outputs. If packaging is required, create the MediaPackage channel and endpoint; otherwise, use an origin such as MediaStore when the outputs already meet viewer requirements.
  2. Create a CloudFront distribution with the correct origin. Point the distribution to the MediaPackage endpoint or MediaStore container. Set the origin path to match the endpoint path used by the stream. Use the actual paths supplied by your AWS resources rather than assuming a generic path.
  3. Add cache behaviors for the format’s manifests and media. A behavior routes matching requests to the origin and applies its cache and request-forwarding settings. For MediaPackage, AWS’s guidance typically separates manifest and segment behaviors. The patterns depend on the selected format:
Format Manifest pattern Segment pattern Behavior note
HLS .m3u8 .ts Route manifest and segment requests using the MediaPackage endpoint’s paths.
CMAF .m3u8 .mp4 Route manifest and segment requests using the MediaPackage endpoint’s paths.
DASH .mpd .mp4 Route manifest and segment requests using the MediaPackage endpoint’s paths.
Smooth Streaming Format-specific manifest Not a separate segment behavior in AWS’s described pattern A single manifest behavior is used.

These extensions are not a substitute for the exact patterns in the current AWS guide: endpoint paths and the chosen output format matter. A mismatched behavior can cause a manifest or segment request to be routed incorrectly.

  1. Set cache lifetime for live freshness. AWS’s documented live MediaPackage policy uses a minimum TTL of five seconds or less to help avoid serving stale content. Apply an appropriate policy to the live requests and confirm it against the current MediaPackage and CloudFront guidance for your configuration.
  2. Forward only the query strings the stream needs. AWS’s documented MediaPackage policy includes the m modification-time query string. Add start and end when using time-shifted viewing, aws.manifestfilter when using manifest filtering, and _HLS_msn and _HLS_part when using LL-HLS blocking playlist requests. Do not forward optional parameters indiscriminately: include those required by the enabled MediaPackage features.
  3. Restrict access to the origin. AWS recommends header-based CDN authorization between MediaPackage endpoints and CloudFront. Its reference solution uses a CDN Identifier custom HTTP header and stores the identifier in Secrets Manager. Configure origin authorization so viewers use CloudFront rather than accessing the origin directly, and follow current AWS guidance for the exact implementation.
  4. Use the CloudFront URL in the player. Once the distribution is deployed and its origin and behaviors are working, configure the player to request the stream media through the standard CloudFront URL for the distribution and the relevant manifest path. Test playback through that URL, not only by requesting the origin directly.

Plan for resilience and origin failover

For broader redundancy, AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS reference architecture describes parallel MediaLive feeds, packaging to HLS, DASH, and CMAF through MediaPackage, and delivery through CloudFront with a CDN Identifier header. Redundancy adds services and configuration, so design it around the failure modes and recovery objectives your event requires.

AWS also documents media quality-aware resiliency (MQAR) for MediaPackage v2 origins. It uses a MediaLive-generated Media Quality Confidence Score to help select an origin: the documented flow sends a primary GET and a concurrent secondary HEAD request, tracks origin scores, and uses the higher-scoring origin for later requests. The feature currently supports MediaPackage v2 origins. For cross-Region deployment, AWS says a secondary channel in another Region must have matching settings, and an origin group must be configured for media quality scoring. Treat this as a specific MediaPackage v2 design, not a general property of every CloudFront distribution.

Estimate delivery cost for your event

CloudFront delivery can be a major part of live-streaming cost, especially as audience size and viewer bitrate increase. AWS’s sample estimates are not current quotes or universal benchmarks: the accessed guide does not state their publication year, and AWS says prices may change. Both examples use US East (N. Virginia) assumptions and highest-bitrate viewer consumption; actual costs depend on Region, audience, bitrate, cache behavior, and service configuration.

AWS sample event MediaLive MediaPackage CloudFront Total Conditions stated by AWS
One-hour event, 1,000 viewers $1.99/hour $0.51/hour $67.24/hour $69.74/hour US East (N. Virginia) assumptions; highest-bitrate viewer consumption.
One-hour live event, approximately 10,000 viewers $3.75/hour $9.01/hour $1,492.56/hour $1,505.60/hour US East (N. Virginia) assumptions; highest-bitrate consumption and a 99% CDN-to-MediaPackage cache-hit ratio.

AWS notes that QVBR and variable video complexity can lower the estimate. Model your own audience, encoded bitrate ladder, Region, cache-hit behavior, and event duration, then check current AWS pricing for the services and Regions you plan to use.

Troubleshoot common playback failures

  • The player cannot load a manifest. Check that the manifest extension and endpoint path match the output format and that a CloudFront cache behavior routes that request to the intended origin.
  • The manifest loads but playback stalls or segments return errors. Verify that the segment behavior matches the actual segment extension and origin path. Also confirm that any required query strings are forwarded and that the origin is serving those segment files.
  • Viewers see stale live content. Review the cache policy for live manifests and ensure its minimum TTL is no more than the five seconds or less used in AWS’s documented live MediaPackage policy. Check whether the required m modification-time query string is handled as expected.
  • Time-shift, filtering, or LL-HLS behavior fails. Confirm that the corresponding query strings are included only when those features are enabled: start and end for time-shift, aws.manifestfilter for manifest filtering, or _HLS_msn and _HLS_part for LL-HLS blocking playlist requests.
  • CloudFront cannot retrieve protected MediaPackage content. Check that the distribution sends the expected CDN authorization header and that its identifier matches the origin’s configuration. If you store the identifier in Secrets Manager, verify the reference-solution configuration and permissions.
  • Failover does not select the expected origin. Confirm whether the design uses MediaPackage v2 MQAR, whether the secondary origin and matching cross-Region channel are configured, and whether the origin group is set up for media quality scoring. MQAR is not available for arbitrary origins.
