Take a full-page screenshot in JavaScript
Install Playwright, save this as screenshot.js, then run it with Node.js. The example launches Chromium, opens a page, saves a PNG, and closes the browser.

- In a new project directory, run
npm init -y. - Install Playwright with

node screenshot.js. Playwright writesscreenshot.pngto the current directory.
If your project already uses Playwright, use its installed package and browser setup rather than adding a second copy.

Choose output, scale and repeatability options
Start with the full-page setting and add options only when the output needs them.

Use a full-page screenshot in a visual test
For Playwright Test, await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() captures and compares an expected screenshot. The assertion waits until two consecutive page screenshots produce the same result, then compares the last screenshot with the expectation. Visual baselines can vary with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Generate and compare baselines in the same environment where possible. A passing comparison in one environment does not guarantee pixel-identical output in another.
Troubleshoot common problems
- The image shows only the viewport: Confirm the screenshot call includes
fullPage: truein JavaScript orfull_page=Truein Python. The default is viewport capture. - No file appears: Check that
pathis present and that the process can write to the target directory. A relative path is resolved from the running process’s working directory. - Your code needs image bytes instead of a file: Omit
pathand use the buffer returned bypage.screenshot(). - Screenshots differ between runs or machines: Disable animations or inject a stylesheet to hide or stabilize dynamic elements. For visual assertions, keep the browser and host environment consistent with the baseline.
- The image is unexpectedly large: Try
scale: 'css'instead of the default device-pixel scale. - Transparency is missing: Use a format that supports transparency;
omitBackgroundis not applicable to JPEG.
