Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor most streamers, H.264 is the safer default because it works with the widest range of streaming services and playback setups. Choose H.265 (HEVC) when your platform accepts it, your encoder supports it, and its bitrate efficiency or HDR support matters to your workflow. There is no universal winner: check the destination’s current ingest rules first, then match the codec to your connection, hardware, and viewers.
H.264 vs. H.265: What changes for a live stream?
H.264, also called AVC, and H.265, also called HEVC, are video compression standards. An encoder uses one of them to compress video before sending it to a live platform. H.265 can preserve more image detail at a given bitrate or produce a smaller file for similar quality, but that advantage depends on the encoder, settings, content, and playback path. It does not guarantee a better-looking stream.
| Decision factor | H.264 / AVC | H.265 / HEVC |
|---|---|---|
| Compatibility | Broadly supported; OBS describes it as playable on nearly every device or software. | More limited in some streaming workflows; confirm ingest and viewer playback support. |
| Compression | May need a higher bitrate than HEVC for similar quality in comparable conditions. | Can deliver better quality at the same bitrate or similar quality at a smaller file size, depending on implementation and settings. |
| OBS encoding | Available through software and supported hardware encoders. | OBS Studio supports HEVC encoding only through hardware encoders. |
| HDR live video | Not the HEVC HDR path identified in YouTube’s current guidance. | YouTube identifies HEVC as its HDR codec for live video. |
Because platform support and encoder capabilities change, verify the current requirements for your specific service and computer before going live.
Can I stream H.265 to YouTube?
Yes. YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingest. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube also automatically transcodes a live stream into output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

YouTube’s recommended bitrates
The following are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees of quality or universal targets for other platforms. The connection must sustain the chosen upload bitrate, with headroom for normal network variation.
| Resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265 | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 4K60 | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
These figures are the recommendations in YouTube’s live encoder guidance, accessed in 2026. For resolutions or frame rates not shown here, use the current YouTube table rather than extrapolating. If your upload connection cannot sustain the recommended bitrate reliably, reduce bitrate, resolution, or frame rate and test before a scheduled stream.
When H.265 makes sense on YouTube
- You have a supported HEVC hardware encoder and can configure it correctly.
- You want to use YouTube’s lower recommended bitrate for HEVC at a listed resolution and frame rate, and your upload connection can sustain it.
- You need the HEVC HDR path described in YouTube’s guidance. YouTube’s cited guidance does not support AV1 for HDR.
When H.264 is the better YouTube choice
- Your encoder or streaming workflow does not offer compatible HEVC output.
- You need the more widely compatible option, or you are uncertain about the ingest configuration.
- Your existing upload and settings already deliver stable H.264 video; switching codecs alone does not guarantee a visible improvement.
Should I use H.264 or H.265 in OBS?
Choose based on the encoder OBS actually offers and the destination’s requirements. OBS identifies H.264 as its default, broad-compatibility format. It supports HEVC encoding only through hardware encoders, including NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel QSV, and Apple VideoToolbox where supported. A computer having a GPU does not by itself establish that it has a compatible HEVC encoder or that OBS can use it for your particular streaming configuration. OBS’s format guide and hardware-encoding guide describe the available paths and platform differences.

Check your encoder and platform combination
- In OBS, open Settings > Output and check the encoder options available for the output mode you use. The exact choices depend on your hardware, operating system, drivers, and OBS configuration.
- Check the destination’s current live ingest requirements for that codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe interval.
- Confirm that your upload connection can hold the chosen bitrate under realistic conditions. Leave capacity for network fluctuation rather than setting the stream at the connection’s measured maximum.
- Run a test stream and inspect stability and playback on the destination before relying on the configuration for an important broadcast.
OBS says hardware encoders move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component and generally offer good quality with minimal performance impact. Quality can differ by encoder generation; older hardware may produce lower quality at the same bitrate. Compatibility also varies: OBS documents Apple Silicon streaming support with H.264 and recording support for HEVC, while its Intel Mac VideoToolbox streaming guidance says to use x264 because that configuration lacks the required constant-bitrate support. Check the current OBS guidance for your device rather than assuming the same encoder works across platforms.
Does Twitch support H.265?
Do not assume that HEVC is available to every Twitch streamer. NVIDIA says, “Twitch supports HEVC (H.265) in the Enhanced Broadcasting closed beta.” That describes a closed beta, not general availability. NVIDIA also claims “25% improved efficiency and quality over H.264” for this feature; that is the vendor’s claim about its beta implementation, not a guaranteed result for other encoders, configurations, or Twitch streams. Read NVIDIA’s announcement and check current Twitch availability before selecting HEVC.
OBS’s general format guide describes H.264 as the only codec supported by most streaming services; platform-specific support can evolve, so treat that broad statement alongside current service documentation. Twitch transcoding availability is also described by OBS as tiered and availability-dependent, unlike YouTube’s documented automatic transcoding. The OBS transcoding page is dated 2021, so verify current Twitch policies rather than relying on it as a current guarantee. OBS’s transcoding guide provides background.

Will viewers be able to play an H.265 stream?
Successful ingest and successful playback are related but distinct questions. A platform may accept a codec and then transcode the stream into viewer-facing formats; viewer access can still depend on the service, device, app, browser, and delivery configuration. YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams for different devices and networks. Do not infer equivalent behavior for every platform.
For services that deliver through Apple’s HTTP Live Streaming (HLS), Apple’s authoring specification includes AVC, HEVC, Dolby Vision, and AV1, with codec-specific container and profile requirements. It specifies fragmented MP4 or MPEG transport streams for H.264 and fragmented MP4 for HEVC. That is HLS authoring guidance, not proof that a particular live platform accepts your OBS output. Consult the service’s own ingest requirements as well as the relevant Apple HLS authoring specification.
Is H.265 better quality at the same bitrate?
It can be, but codec choice is only one part of the result. The encoder implementation and generation, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, settings, motion and detail in the scene, and any platform transcoding all affect perceived quality. A complex game scene, fast camera movement, or fine texture can challenge a bitrate that looks sufficient for a static talking-head shot.

- Use a platform-recommended bitrate as a starting point when available, not as a promise that every scene will look identical.
- Compare the same content and viewing conditions if you are evaluating a change; otherwise, codec efficiency can be confused with differences in scene complexity or settings.
- Prioritize a stable stream over a higher-resolution or more efficient codec setting that your connection cannot sustain.
Should recordings use the same codec as a live stream?
No. A recording is a local file; a live stream must also meet the destination’s ingest requirements and maintain a stable connection. OBS recommends using the best-quality hardware encoder available for recording, with its stated order of AV1, then HEVC, then H.264. That recording recommendation should not be read as a live-platform compatibility ranking.
OBS recommends MKV as a resilient default recording container because an interrupted recording is less likely to lose the entire file; OBS can remux recordings afterward. Fragmented MP4 or MOV may suit upload and editing compatibility. A direct MP4 or MOV recording can be vulnerable if recording stops before the file is finalized. See the OBS formats guide for the current format recommendations.
For HDR, NVIDIA’s OBS guide documents an HEVC-based path and identifies YouTube as the supported HDR streaming service in that guide. Treat vendor-specific settings as a starting point and confirm current OBS and destination requirements. NVIDIA’s NVENC OBS guide provides its configuration details.

Why is H.264 still widely used?
Compatibility is the practical reason: OBS describes H.264 as ubiquitous for web video and playable on nearly every device or software, and says it is the only codec supported by most streaming services in its general guide. HEVC’s greater compression efficiency is useful only when the whole workflow accepts it. OBS also notes that HEVC had more restrictive licensing agreements and was less widely used for web streaming; that is one context for adoption, not a complete explanation of every platform’s codec policy.
Common codec and streaming problems
- The platform rejects the stream or reports an unsupported codec: Confirm that the service accepts the selected codec for your account and ingest method. Switch to a supported codec, commonly H.264, if HEVC is unavailable.
- OBS does not show an HEVC encoder: Check hardware, operating-system, driver, and OBS compatibility. OBS supports HEVC encoding through hardware encoders only; not every device or configuration exposes one.
- The stream buffers, drops frames, or disconnects: Lower the bitrate, resolution, or frame rate until the connection can sustain the output. Use the destination’s bitrate guidance for the selected codec, then test the revised settings.
- The stream looks worse than expected despite using H.265: HEVC is not a quality guarantee. Review bitrate, encoder implementation, scene complexity, and platform transcoding; test a stable configuration rather than assuming the codec alone is responsible.
- HDR output is rejected or appears wrong: Verify that the encoder, OBS configuration, and destination all support the same HDR workflow. YouTube identifies HEVC for HDR in its current live guidance, while the NVIDIA OBS guide documents a vendor-specific path.
- A local recording is unreadable after an interruption: Use OBS’s recommended MKV recording workflow and remux afterward when needed, rather than recording directly to a container vulnerable to incomplete finalization.
