There is no single monthly price. Your cost depends on what runs the encoder, its electricity use, your internet plan and any data charges, and whether you pay for a streaming host. At YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates, a continuous 1080p stream sends about 3.24 decimal TB of video payload in a 30-day month at 30 fps, or 3.89 decimal TB at 60 fps. Those figures help estimate data use; they are not an all-in cost or a measured result.
What determines the monthly cost?
For a computer-based stream, count the additional electricity and any incremental internet or data charge. If you rent a host or use a managed streaming service, add its fee. Any licensing or other production expenses are separate. There is no universal YouTube creator fee for encoder ingest established here, so do not treat the platform itself as a known monthly charge.
- Encoder or host: A computer you already own is different from newly purchased equipment or a rented server. Decide whether you are counting an existing device as a sunk cost or including its purchase.
- Electricity: This depends on the encoder’s average draw while running and your local electricity rate.
- Internet: An uncapped flat-rate plan may have no marginal data fee; a capped or metered plan may charge for the stream’s additional transfer. Check the terms of your actual plan.
- Rights and production: Any applicable music or video licensing is content- and territory-specific, and is not included in the technical estimate.
The creator’s upload volume is determined by the encoder’s outgoing bitrate. YouTube transcodes live streams into output formats for viewers, so audience viewership does not multiply the upload volume from your encoder.
How much data does a 24/7 1080p stream use?
YouTube’s recommended H.264 encoder settings are 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. The following estimates assume the selected bitrate is sustained continuously for 30 days (2,592,000 seconds). They are arithmetic estimates from those recommended settings, not published or measured monthly usage statistics.

These figures exclude network and protocol overhead; actual data transfer can therefore differ. YouTube also gives a broad mobile-streaming rule of thumb of about 10 MB per minute, but that guidance is not a substitute for calculating a continuous encoder’s 1080p upload at its selected bitrate.

Monthly electricity cost = average encoder draw in watts ÷ 1,000 × 720 hours × your electricity price per kWh.
For example, insert your measured or otherwise reliable average wattage and the rate on your bill. The 720 hours assumes a 30-day month. Without your device’s draw and local tariff, a dollar estimate would be a guess.

Internet and data
Check whether your internet plan has a data cap, metered billing, or overage charges, and whether the stream’s estimated additional transfer fits within its allowance. Confirm that the connection can sustain the outgoing bitrate as well: YouTube advises allowing capacity for the primary stream, a backup, and 20% headroom. Ethernet is recommended for computer streaming. A wired connection can help reliability, but at the same encoding settings it does not reduce the monthly video payload.

Estimated total = electricity + incremental internet or data charge + encoder-host or cloud-hosting fee + applicable licensing or other production expense.

- Stream from a computer you control: Use an encoder to send the prerecorded feed to YouTube with the stream URL and stream key. The computer, encoder, and internet connection must remain available while it streams; budget their power and any additional data costs.
- Use a rented or managed host: Compare the actual monthly fee, included outbound data and uplink, support for unattended looping and restart behavior, recovery after an outage, and archive workflow. Verify the provider’s current terms and suitability for continuous prerecorded YouTube Live before paying; no general host prices are established here.

DIY setup and operating checks
- Prepare the video and encoder: Choose the output resolution and frame rate that fit the content and viewers. For H.264, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps at 1080p30 or 12 Mbps at 1080p60. These are recommended encoder settings, not a claim that every source file needs that bitrate.
- Connect to YouTube Live: In YouTube’s live-stream setup, obtain the stream URL and stream key and enter them in the encoder. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to the stream.
- Check the outbound connection: Use Ethernet where practical and ensure sustained upload capacity can handle the chosen bitrate plus YouTube’s recommended allowance for primary, backup, and 20% headroom.
- Test unattended operation: Confirm that the encoder can loop the prerecorded video and that the computer and network remain on for the intended session. Include a recovery plan for power, internet, or encoder interruptions.
- Plan archives in shorter sessions: YouTube says a stream under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. For a month-long presence, schedule shorter sessions and keep a local recording if a dependable replay matters.
- Clear rights before going live: YouTube’s live-stream terms require the content provider to represent that they hold the rights needed for the live content, including music licensing rights where applicable. Rights costs depend on the content and territory.
