There is no single reliable electricity cost for running a Dell OptiPlex Micro as a 24/7 YouTube encoder: it depends on the exact model, its average power draw while encoding, and your electricity rate. Use your computer’s measured average wall power in this formula: annual cost = average watts × 8.76 × your all-in price per kWh. Divide the annual result by 12 for an average monthly cost.

Estimate the electricity cost

A computer drawing an average of 13 watts continuously uses 113.88 kWh in a year: 13 × 8.76. At €0.35 per kWh, that scenario costs about €39.86 per year, or €3.32 per month. This is an arithmetic illustration, not a measurement of a Dell OptiPlex Micro running a live stream.

  1. Measure the complete computer’s average power draw at the wall while it is running the stream you intend to keep live.
  2. Multiply the measured watts by 8.76 to estimate annual energy use in kWh.
  3. Multiply annual kWh by your all-in electricity rate per kWh to estimate annual cost; divide by 12 for a monthly average.

Use the price on your electricity bill, including applicable per-kWh charges. The €0.35/kWh rate above is an input used in a third-party estimate, not a stated current rate for any particular country.

Why published OptiPlex power figures do not give one streaming cost

The figures available for different OptiPlex Micro models describe different states and workloads. Idle, local video playback, and live encoding are not interchangeable; none establishes the average wall draw of your particular computer encoding a continuous stream.

System and source Reported power or energy figure What it describes
ENERGY STAR-certified OptiPlex Micro 7010 (D15U) 7.7 W short idle; 1.3 W long idle; 1.3 W sleep; 0.3 W off Certification-record categories, not streaming measurements.
Beat&Win estimate for OptiPlex 5080 Micro i3/8GB/256GB 13 W active; estimated 118.1 kWh/year and €41.35/year at €0.35/kWh A third-party estimate and continuous-use calculation, not a direct long-duration live-encoding test.
U-Labs review of OptiPlex 7040M About 18 W average 1080p YouTube playback in Firefox on Linux Mint; playback is not live encoding.
ServeTheHome test of OptiPlex 7090 Micro About 12–14 W Idle on 120 V for the tested configuration, not a streaming workload.

These measurements and estimates should not be ranked as if they were tests of the same computer under the same load. In particular, multiplying an idle certification figure by the hours in a year would not produce a measured live-encoding cost.

Measure the computer you plan to stream with

The most useful estimate comes from the exact OptiPlex and streaming setup you will use. Measure the whole computer at the wall while the stream is running, and use a representative average over a meaningful period: encoding load, software, stream settings, and background activity can change power draw. No particular meter model is established here.

Dell OptiPlex 7060 Micro Desktop Business PC, Intel Core i5-8500T 2.1GHz, 16GB, 256GB SSD, USB Type-C, Win 11 Pro (Renewed)
  • Get reliable performance from the Intel Core i5-8500T 2.1GHz processor.
  • 16GB DDR4 memory - For multitasking power.
  • 256GB solid state drive for an amazingly smooth and fast computing experience.
  • Ports: (2) DisplayPort (5) USB 3.1 (1) USB Type-C (1) Serial (2) PS/2 (1) Universal Audio Jack (1) Line Out.
  • Operating System: Windows 11 Pro 64 Bit-Multi-Language Supports.

Record the configuration alongside the result: OptiPlex model and CPU, operating system and encoder, codec, resolution, frame rate, average wall watts, and electricity rate. That context makes the estimate useful and prevents an idle or playback figure from being mistaken for a live-stream result.

Keep the YouTube stream stable without confusing settings with power cost

Stream quality settings affect encoder workload and network needs, but a recommended bitrate is not a measure of electricity consumption. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, supports up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate encoding, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds). The appropriate resolution, codec, and bitrate depend on your quality target and encoder capability. YouTube’s current guidance, for example, recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 and 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 at 1080p30. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

  • Test with audio and movement similar to the intended stream, then monitor stream health. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
  • Your channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions during the prior 90 days. Review YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.

These requirements help with a working stream; they do not substitute for measuring the computer’s power draw.

When a computer is not the only way to keep a YouTube stream running

If the goal is a continuous YouTube stream made from uploaded video, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: it loops uploaded videos without requiring your home computer to remain on. The steps are to upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It is for uploaded-video streams to YouTube, not camera broadcasts.
