Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe electricity cost of running a 24/7 YouTube stream from a Mac mini depends on its average power draw at the wall and your local electricity rate. Calculate average watts ÷ 1,000 × hours to get kilowatt-hours (kWh), then multiply by your price per kWh. Because neither your tariff nor the Mac mini’s power draw during your particular stream is known in advance, a single currency estimate would be guesswork.
Calculate your 24/7 electricity use and cost
For continuous operation, a 30-day month contains 720 hours and a 365-day year contains 8,760 hours. Let P be your measured average wall power in watts and R your electricity rate per kWh:
- Daily energy:
P ÷ 1,000 × 24kWh. - 30-day energy:
P ÷ 1,000 × 720kWh. - 365-day energy:
P ÷ 1,000 × 8,760kWh. - Cost for any period:
energy in kWh × R.
These examples show the arithmetic, not measured Mac mini streaming workloads:
| Assumed average draw | Energy per day | Energy per 30 days | Energy per 365 days |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 W | 0.24 kWh | 7.2 kWh | 87.6 kWh |
| 20 W | 0.48 kWh | 14.4 kWh | 175.2 kWh |
Multiply the applicable energy figure by your own rate. For example, if your 30-day use is 7.2 kWh, the energy charge is 7.2 multiplied by your price per kWh. Electricity bills may also include taxes, tiered rates or fixed fees; use the marginal rate that best reflects the added consumption, and treat this calculation as an estimate of the energy charge rather than the entire bill.

Measure the Mac mini while it is actually streaming
Apple’s published idle and maximum figures are useful reference points, but neither tells you what a specific Mac mini will average while encoding your chosen live stream. For a meaningful estimate, use a plug-in power meter or another reliable wall measurement while the stream is running in its intended configuration.
What Apple’s figures do—and do not—mean
Apple’s support table lists the following model/configuration examples; its idle definition is power with only Finder open under default power-management settings. These are Apple figures, not streaming measurements. Apple Support’s Mac mini power-consumption table was current as accessed in 2026.

| Mac mini example in Apple’s table | Idle | Maximum figure listed |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 Mac mini with M4 | 4 W | 65 W |
| 2024 Mac mini with M4 Pro | 5 W | 140 W |
| 2023 Mac mini with M2 | 7 W | 50 W CPU maximum |
| Mac mini with M1 (2020) | 6.8 W | 39 W CPU maximum |
Apple’s current specifications also list maximum continuous power for configurations; a maximum is not an expected 24/7 average. Don’t substitute an idle or maximum figure for a measurement of your own stream. Apple’s model-specific technical specifications are available from Apple’s Mac mini specifications.
Include the equipment you intend to keep on
Measure the Mac mini and decide whether the estimate should also include an external display, drives, capture hardware or network equipment. If your meter measures the whole setup, its reading represents that setup—not the Mac mini alone. For an always-on stream, turn off any peripherals that won’t actually be needed before taking a representative reading.

Streaming settings affect workload, but not a known wattage
Resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate influence the encoding workload, but the available published guidance does not establish Mac mini power consumption for any particular setting. Choose settings supported by your streaming software and network, then measure the resulting setup rather than inferring watts from an idle specification.
YouTube’s current live encoder settings guidance includes H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 ingest options, recommends RTMPS for RTMP-based streams, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds). Its H.264 examples include:

These are YouTube’s recommended bitrate examples, not guarantees of a given picture quality or power draw. YouTube automatically transcodes the incoming live feed into output formats for viewers.
Check upload capacity and plan for continuous operation
Your stream’s total bitrate must fit within your available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends keeping 20% headroom and warns that connection disruptions can break a stream. Test the upload connection and the complete audio/video setup before relying on an always-on broadcast; YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend Ethernet for computer streams. To enable live streaming, YouTube says a channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Confirm eligibility and current requirements in YouTube Help’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

Electricity use is not the only operational consideration. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns: “If your live stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” A continuous 24-hour broadcast therefore should not be assumed to produce a complete YouTube VOD. If an archive matters, make a local recording or plan segments that create shorter archives, then verify the resulting recording. See YouTube Help’s archive live streams guidance.
Compare electricity cost with the full operating cost
For an existing Mac mini, the formula estimates the added electricity charge from its measured load. If you are considering buying one specifically for continuous streaming, separate that recurring charge from the one-time computer purchase, and consider configuration needs, storage, upload reliability and how you will monitor or recover a failed stream. Local hardware prices and electricity tariffs vary; the figures above do not establish either.
There is also a cloud option if you do not want a computer at home to remain on. StreamNeo keeps a YouTube stream running from uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera or to other platforms.
Or let it run in the cloud
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the content from the cloud.
Nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Learn about StreamNeo or start the free day.
