Hetzner VPS cost examples
Hetzner’s 15 June 2026 EU price-adjustment table lists monthly server rates before VAT and excluding a Primary IPv4 address. Hetzner lists Primary IPv4 separately at €0.50 or $0.60 per month before VAT. Adding those items gives the following estimates:

These are arithmetic totals based on Hetzner’s published prices, not a performance comparison. The actual bill can vary with location, applicable taxes, selected plan, traffic, and current order-screen pricing. Hetzner says Primary IPv6 is free, but a public network interface requires a Primary IP; its cloud servers do not include public IP addresses by default. Hetzner’s cloud server overview explains the distinction.
What the monthly VPS bill includes—and what can add to it
Server billing continues while powered off
Hetzner bills a created cloud server until it is deleted, even if it is powered off. If the goal is an uninterrupted stream, powering down is not a way to pause the server charge. The monthly server price caps hourly billing when the server is kept for a full month, according to Hetzner’s cloud billing FAQ.

Outbound traffic depends on plan and location
Hetzner charges for outgoing traffic; incoming and internal traffic are free. Included outbound traffic and any overage price depend on the plan and location, so check the terms for the specific server rather than applying one allowance to every Hetzner VPS.
For scale, a constant 5 Mbps stream transfers about 1.62 decimal TB over 30 days, before protocol overhead. At 12 Mbps, the corresponding estimate is about 3.89 decimal TB. These are calculations from bitrate multiplied by 2,592,000 seconds and divided by eight; they are not Hetzner traffic statistics. Compare the estimate with the included outbound allowance and overage terms for your chosen location and plan.

Does the CX23 have enough power for FFmpeg?
The monthly price alone cannot answer that. First determine what FFmpeg will do:
- Copy or remux: FFmpeg passes through already encoded audio and video instead of encoding new video. This is a different compute workload from transcoding.
- Encode or transcode in real time: FFmpeg must process the source and produce the outgoing format. The needed CPU capacity depends on the actual codec, resolution, frame rate, encoding settings, and source.
Hetzner describes shared- and dedicated-resource cloud server categories, but the cited official material does not provide Hetzner-specific FFmpeg benchmarks for these workloads. Do not assume that the lowest-priced VPS can sustain a particular real-time encoding job based on its price or a bitrate figure. Test the exact media and FFmpeg settings on the intended instance, monitor for missed deadlines or buffering, and choose a larger or different resource category if it cannot keep up.

Set the YouTube output bitrate for the video, not the VPS price
YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends RTMPS and lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1. Its H.264 recommendations include 5–14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 6–17 Mbps for 1080p60. These are format-specific ranges, not universal settings; use YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube transcodes live streams into output formats for viewers.
Bitrate is useful for estimating network transfer, but it does not establish how much CPU a VPS needs. A bitrate within YouTube’s recommended range is not proof that a particular instance can encode the stream in real time.

How to decide whether a Hetzner VPS is the right cost
- Choose the workload: establish whether FFmpeg will copy/remux an already encoded stream or encode/transcode it, and specify the codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Price the public IP: add a Primary IPv4 if the setup needs it, and include the applicable tax for your billing location.
- Check traffic terms: estimate monthly outbound use from the planned bitrate and compare it with the allowance and overage price for that plan and location.
- Test the exact workload: verify the stream remains stable on the selected instance before relying on it for 24/7 operation. No official Hetzner-specific FFmpeg result in the cited material establishes a guaranteed fit.
- Account for operations: an always-on VPS still requires configuration and monitoring, and Hetzner’s server charge continues until deletion even if it is powered off.
