There is no reliable public evidence that a 24/7 YouTube stream inherently suppresses views of the same channel’s recorded videos. But viewers have limited time, so a stream could substitute for some video viewing—or introduce viewers to older uploads. Whether either happens on your channel is a measurement question, not something public evidence can settle for you.
What is—and is not—known about cannibalization
YouTube describes recommendations as personalized, using viewer signals such as clicks, watch time, survey responses, shares, likes, and dislikes. Its public explanation does not say that running a continuous stream penalizes a channel’s recorded uploads. The system also responds dynamically to viewers’ changing habits; that is a general explanation of recommendations, not a guarantee that a stream will help or leave VOD performance untouched. YouTube’s recommendation-system explainer does not establish a channel-level rule suppressing one format in favor of another.
There is also no authoritative published statistic establishing how often 24/7 streams cannibalize recorded-video views, or the average causal effect. The practical concern is audience substitution: a regular viewer might spend time watching the stream instead of a VOD. That is plausible, but it is not evidence of a universal effect or a YouTube platform penalty. A stream could also complement the catalog by bringing older videos back into view, or have little measurable effect on VODs.
Why a bigger stream does not prove VODs lost views
If the stream attracts views, the VODs’ percentage of total channel views can decline even while their absolute views remain flat. A changing share is not by itself evidence that YouTube transferred recommendations or views from recorded uploads to the stream. Check the VODs’ own performance.

What YouTube says about comparing formats
YouTube advises creators who publish multiple formats to compare videos of the same type, because audience behavior differs by format and success may look different. In YouTube Studio, use the Content analytics filters for Live, On demand, and Live & on demand to separate the stream from recorded-video results. Review the relevant performance metrics and traffic sources rather than treating all channel views as one interchangeable total. How to test the effect on your channel
A useful comparison looks for a change in recorded-video performance relative to your channel’s own baseline—not just a change in the mix of Live and On demand views.

- Set a baseline before launch. In YouTube Studio, open Analytics and then the Content tab. Record your On demand results over a period long enough to smooth ordinary day-to-day noise. Use the same length of time for the later comparison; where possible, compare similar seasons.
- Separate formats. In Content analytics, compare On demand with Live. Use Live & on demand only when you need the combined channel picture. YouTube makes live stream reports available at video and channel levels; analytics data is processed by video ID.
- Track absolute VOD performance. Compare recorded videos’ views, impressions, click-through rate, watch time, average view duration, traffic sources, and top content before and after launch. Check returning viewers where available. A lower VOD share of total views alone is not a decline in absolute VOD views.
- Log other changes that could explain a difference. Record the stream’s launch date and changes to upload frequency, topics, titles, thumbnails, promotions, paid traffic, or publishing cadence. Consider seasonality and topic mix before attributing an increase or decline to the stream.
- Judge against your goal. If the aim is incremental reach, examine whether the stream attracts new viewers while recorded uploads retain stable or rising absolute views and impressions. If the aim is community or long-duration listening, assess those outcomes separately from VOD reach; formats can serve different channel goals.
Use a sufficiently long before-and-after window, but do not treat a simple change in timing as proof of causation. A channel-level comparison can show whether performance changed alongside the stream; by itself, it cannot rule out other causes.
What published 24/7-stream case reports can tell you
AIR Media-Tech has published examples reporting large stream totals and positive channel outcomes. They are commercial case reports, not controlled independent studies: they do not provide a sufficient counterfactual or granular VOD data to establish what happened because of the stream.

- AIR Media-Tech reported that the Lesnoy stream received 1.15 million views and 260,000 watch hours in March–April 2025, with more than 2,000 subscribers attributed to it. - In a 2026 case report about an anonymized “Random Channel,” AIR Media-Tech reported 561,598 stream views, 359,376 stream watch hours, and average view duration of 38:23 for the stream versus 8:10 for regular videos. - AIR Media-Tech reported that a boxing channel’s monthly views rose 40.5% after continuous broadcasts. The report does not establish that the stream alone caused the increase or show whether VOD views rose rather than stream views accounting for the change.
