Use OBS scenes to change the picture during the broadcast, then add YouTube chapters to the archived video using a timestamp log. These are separate jobs: an OBS scene switch changes what viewers see; it does not automatically create a YouTube chapter. YouTube’s guidance documents chapters added through a video’s description, so treat chaptering as a post-stream step rather than assuming chapter markers will appear or update in the live player.
Scenes and chapters do different things
An OBS scene is a composition of sources sent to the stream—for example, a lake video, a rain-on-window loop, or a fireplace image. Switching scenes changes the outgoing visual. YouTube chapters, by contrast, divide a video into labeled sections for navigation. They do not trigger scene changes. OBS’s overview of scenes and transitions and YouTube’s chapter guidance describe these separate functions.
For a 24/7 ambient stream, plan to log each visual change while it happens and apply the resulting timestamps to the archived video’s description afterward. The sources cited here do not establish whether chapters display or update during an ongoing YouTube broadcast.
Prepare scene changes in OBS
Create a scene for each visual state
- In OBS, create and name a scene for each distinct state, such as “Dawn lake,” “Rain on the window,” or “Fireplace at night.”
- Add the image or video sources that make up each state. Check the preview to confirm the composition is correct before switching to it live.
- Choose a transition, such as Cut or Fade, and set its duration in OBS. A restrained fade may suit ambient content, but that is an editorial choice, not a YouTube chapter requirement.

Choose how to trigger the switch
For operator-controlled changes, assign OBS hotkeys to the intended scenes and test them before the stream. A physical controller is optional; OBS supports scene hotkeys. If labeled hardware buttons are more convenient, OBS’s plugins guide discusses hardware communication through plugins, including Elgato Stream Deck as an example.
Do not assume that a hotkey or controller also creates a chapter timestamp. Keep a separate timestamp log unless your chosen setup has a verified way to record both. The official materials cited here do not establish a particular scheduled automation workflow for unattended 24/7 scene changes.

Log changes and add chapters to the replay
- Record each change. As you switch scenes, note the elapsed time and a short, descriptive title. A browser-based Stream Marker Tool describes capturing elapsed timestamps and titles for later use in a YouTube description; it is optional, not a YouTube or OBS requirement.
- Check the archived video’s timeline. After the broadcast, compare every logged time with the actual recording. Recalculate timestamps if the recording starts late, includes a pre-roll, was trimmed, or uses a different zero point. Chapter times must match the video being edited, not simply the time shown by a separate clock or log.
- Format the description list. YouTube’s manual chapter instructions require the first timestamp to begin at 00:00, at least three timestamps in ascending order, and chapters at least 10 seconds long. Include a title after each timestamp.
- Save and verify. Save the description, then check the archived video to confirm that YouTube displays the chapter bar. If it does not, recheck the first marker, count, order, minimum chapter length, and alignment with the final video.
Example format only—replace these illustrative times and labels with the actual scene changes in the recording:
