To run a looping rain-and-thunder video on YouTube Live from a Linux VPS, upload media you have rights to use, send it to YouTube with FFmpeg over RTMPS, and manage FFmpeg with systemd so it starts at boot and can restart after some process failures. A VPS and restart policy do not guarantee an uninterrupted stream: network, media, credentials, and YouTube-side issues still need monitoring and an operator response.

How the setup works

The VPS stores and sends your rain-and-thunder media. FFmpeg reads the media, optionally encodes or packages it, and sends a continuous stream to the ingestion address and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. A systemd service can launch FFmpeg at boot and restart it after certain failures. YouTube receives the stream and reports its health in Live Control Room.

This is an implementation pattern, not an official YouTube deployment recipe or a guarantee of 24/7 availability. The community example at 24/7 YouTube Stream — Setup & Ops Notes describes one Ubuntu, FFmpeg, and systemd arrangement; treat it as an example rather than a validated universal configuration.

Choose the media and VPS before configuring YouTube

Use media you are allowed to stream

Choose a recording and visual that you have permission to stream and, if relevant, monetize. A label such as “royalty-free” or “public domain” is not by itself proof that a particular recording, image, or licence is suitable for your intended use. Check the actual licence and its conditions. YouTube’s reused-content and copyright policies can affect monetization independently of whether you have permission to use an asset.

Prefer a single finished audio-and-video file

A pre-rendered video with its rain audio already embedded is usually simpler to loop than separate audio and video inputs: both tracks share one timeline. If you loop separate sources, check their durations, start points, and loop boundaries. A duration mismatch or abrupt boundary can produce silence, a jump, or synchronization drift. Listen and watch through the boundary during a test rather than assuming the loop is seamless.

Size the VPS for sustained sending, not just a speed-test peak

Your VPS needs sustained outbound capacity for the selected video bitrate, audio, and operational headroom. Check the provider’s bandwidth allowance and policies as well as the network route and sustained throughput; a short speed test does not establish that a server can send continuously at the same rate. If FFmpeg will transcode, CPU capacity also matters. Disk must hold the media and any working files. No universal VPS core count, memory size, provider, plan price, upload rate, or uptime level is established here, so select against your actual media and verify it with a representative test.

Choose YouTube-compatible output settings

YouTube Help’s encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS, AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the data through Google’s servers, and advises choosing a quality the connection can reliably support. The recommendations below are YouTube’s encoder settings, not a promise about VPS performance.

Output Video bitrate recommendation Source
720p at 30 fps 6 Mbps for AV1/H.265; 8 Mbps for H.264 YouTube Help, accessed October 3, 2026
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265; 14 Mbps for H.264 YouTube Help, accessed October 3, 2026
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps for AV1/H.265; 17 Mbps for H.264 YouTube Help, accessed October 3, 2026

For advanced stereo audio, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Match the actual output resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval to your source, encoder, and VPS capacity. The table does not cover every possible resolution/frame-rate combination; consult YouTube’s current live encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the full requirements.

Stream-copy or transcode?

If a file already has compatible video and audio codecs, dimensions, frame rate, and other stream properties, FFmpeg may be able to pass the streams through without re-encoding. This can reduce server CPU use, but compatibility depends on the specific file, FFmpeg build, and YouTube ingestion requirements. Transcoding gives you control over output settings but uses CPU or other encoding resources and can fail if the VPS cannot keep up. FFmpeg’s available encoders depend on how it was built; for example, libx264 support requires a build with the corresponding support. Check the installed build and test the actual media rather than assuming a particular encoder is present. See the FFmpeg documentation.

Set up the VPS and test FFmpeg

  1. Provision a supported Linux VPS. Choose storage for the media, sustained outbound bandwidth for the selected bitrate plus headroom, and sufficient CPU if you will transcode. Confirm the provider’s bandwidth billing and usage rules before leaving a stream running continuously.
  2. Install FFmpeg from a trusted distribution source. Check the installed build and confirm it includes the encoder you intend to use. Do not assume all Linux packages include the same codecs.
  3. Upload the media and inspect it. Verify that the intended audio and video streams are present and that the file plays through to its end. A single file with embedded audio is the simplest starting point.
  4. Create the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room, configure the broadcast, and obtain the current ingestion endpoint and stream key. YouTube’s current interface and ingest details are authoritative; do not rely on a copied key or an endpoint from someone else’s example.
  5. Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password. Keep it out of public repositories, screenshots, shared logs, and shell history where possible. Store it in a restricted configuration file readable only by the service account that runs FFmpeg. The community example also warns against exposing the key.
  6. Run a short private or unlisted test. Start with settings that your VPS can sustain and a test broadcast that lets you check picture, rain audio, motion, and the loop boundary. In Live Control Room, check stream health and messages, and verify that reconnect behavior is acceptable before scheduling a public stream. YouTube recommends testing representative content and monitoring health before and during a live stream.

Example FFmpeg patterns

These are starting patterns, not universal commands. Replace the paths and placeholder values, confirm the installed FFmpeg build supports the selected encoders, and test with your actual file. Keep the stream key out of a command that may be saved in shell history or exposed in process listings. One safer pattern is to have a protected wrapper or service configuration construct the destination from restricted settings; do not publish a real key in a script or repository.

For compatible pre-encoded media, the basic stream-copy pattern is:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/rain/rain-thunder.mp4 -c:v copy -c:a copy -f flv "<RTMPS_INGEST_URL>/<STREAM_KEY>"

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

-stream_loop -1 asks FFmpeg to loop the input indefinitely and -re reads it at its recorded rate. Stream-copy is appropriate only when the input streams and container handling work for the selected ingest path. If the command fails or YouTube rejects the output, inspect FFmpeg’s error and YouTube’s health messages; do not assume that adding stream-copy makes an incompatible file acceptable.

If encoding H.264 video and AAC audio, an illustrative pattern is:

Replace each bracketed placeholder with a value appropriate to the chosen output and compatible with your file and FFmpeg build. For the recommended two-second keyframe interval, set the GOP length consistently with the output frame rate—for example, two seconds’ worth of frames—rather than copying a fixed frame count across different rates. Use CBR-oriented bitrate settings and verify FFmpeg’s behavior; the command alone does not establish that the resulting stream meets every YouTube requirement. If your source is already encoded at a suitable resolution and rate, re-encoding may be unnecessary.

Run FFmpeg under systemd

Once the manual test succeeds, use a dedicated unprivileged Linux account and a systemd unit to manage the process. Keep the destination secret in a protected environment or configuration file. The example below shows the service shape; adapt paths, user, group, and secret-handling to the distribution and FFmpeg command you validated. Avoid placing a real key in a unit file readable by other users.

Create a service account and media directory with only the permissions needed. Put the service’s protected settings in a file such as /etc/rain-stream.env, restrict its ownership and mode so only root and the service account can read it, and ensure no process logs the key. The file might define a destination variable, but validate the exact shell expansion and argument handling in your wrapper before relying on it.

Use a wrapper owned and protected appropriately to invoke the tested FFmpeg command while safely reading the secret. The sample unit is not a complete secure wrapper or an assurance that the command will work unchanged on every system. Confirm the service’s environment, file permissions, and logs before enabling it.

  1. Validate and load the unit. Save the service file under /etc/systemd/system/, then run sudo systemctl daemon-reload.
  2. Start it and inspect the result. Run sudo systemctl start rain-stream.service, then sudo systemctl status rain-stream.service. Review logs with sudo journalctl -u rain-stream.service -f and confirm the stream is visible and healthy in YouTube Studio.
  3. Enable boot start only after testing. When the service works through a manual restart and a VPS reboot test, run sudo systemctl enable rain-stream.service. If the process exits, systemd’s restart policy can relaunch it, but it cannot correct invalid credentials, bad media, an unreachable network, or a YouTube-side interruption.

Monitor the stream and plan recovery

A running FFmpeg process is not proof that viewers can see a healthy YouTube broadcast. Check both the local service and YouTube’s observed stream state. YouTube recommends testing representative audio and movement before going live, then monitoring stream health and messages.

  • Process failure: inspect systemctl status and the unit journal for the exit reason. Correct file paths, permissions, encoder errors, or configuration before allowing repeated restarts to continue.
  • Platform or credential issue: check the stream key and current ingest details in YouTube Studio, and read its health messages. A process restart will not fix a revoked or incorrect key.
  • Network instability or insufficient capacity: inspect VPS network conditions and provider bandwidth policies, then test at a bitrate the connection can sustain. Reduce output quality if necessary rather than repeatedly restarting at an unsustainable rate.
  • High CPU: determine whether FFmpeg is transcoding and whether the chosen settings exceed the VPS’s capacity. If compatible, pre-encoded media with stream-copy may lower CPU use; otherwise use an encoding configuration the VPS can sustain.
  • Disk pressure: check free space and remove only files that are not needed for the stream or recovery. Keep enough capacity for media and any temporary files your setup creates.
  • Loop glitches or audio drift: test the boundary and compare separate source durations. Consider preparing one finished file with synchronized audio and video.
  • Repeated disconnects: treat systemd restart as one recovery layer, not end-to-end monitoring. Set an alert or an operator check that can detect YouTube-side loss and define who will investigate and recover it.

There is no basis here for promising “never goes offline” or a particular uptime level. Availability depends on the host, network, media, credentials, YouTube ingestion, and the monitoring and recovery process you actually operate.

Estimate the ongoing cost

A VPS’s total cost is more than its advertised compute price. Account for recurring hosting charges, bandwidth allowances or overage rules, storage, any paid monitoring, and the CPU capacity needed if you transcode. No provider plan, current VPS price, or universally suitable server size is established here, so compare providers using the sustained outbound traffic your chosen settings require and verify their current terms directly.
