An OBS update or computer reboot stops the encoder running on that computer, so OBS’s automatic reconnect alone cannot bring the stream back. For a local setup, plan the interruption, configure OBS to start streaming when launched, automate OBS startup after reboot, and verify the feed in YouTube Studio. These steps support recovery; they do not guarantee viewers will see uninterrupted playback or that every restart will resume the same broadcast.
Understand what needs to recover
There are two separate problems. OBS automatic reconnect can help when an existing OBS session loses its network connection temporarily. If OBS closes, or the computer restarts for an update, the operating system must launch OBS again; only then can OBS attempt to reconnect and send the stream. OBS documents the --startstreaming launch parameter for automatically starting a stream, but startup automation and a successful connection still need to be arranged and checked.
On YouTube, streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, according to YouTube Help’s encoder guidance. That archival guidance does not promise that a broadcast will continue seamlessly across an encoder restart.
Prepare the YouTube broadcast settings
Protect and update the stream key
The stream key is the credential and address the encoder uses to send video to YouTube. Treat it like a password. If you reset the key in YouTube, replace the saved key in OBS before trying to stream again. YouTube explains stream keys and encoder setup in its live streaming encoder guidance.

Check auto-start and auto-stop for scheduled broadcasts
For a scheduled broadcast, review YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop controls rather than assuming that reconnecting OBS will produce the intended event behavior. YouTube says reusing stream settings also copies those selections. Confirm the correct scheduled event is selected after recovery. See YouTube’s guidance on encoder settings.
Recover a local OBS stream after an update
1. Choose a maintenance window
Install OBS and operating-system updates during a low-audience period. For a station that must operate around the clock, tell listeners when a pause may occur. If your production setup supports it, prepare a simple holding slate or audio message. A planned window reduces surprise, but neither OBS nor YouTube promises uninterrupted viewing during a local software restart.

2. Enable OBS automatic reconnect
In OBS, open Settings > Advanced and review the automatic reconnect options. OBS lists automatic reconnect among its Advanced settings; use it to help handle a temporary connection loss while OBS remains open. The exact controls can vary by OBS version. Reconnect does not relaunch OBS after an update or reboot. See the OBS Advanced Settings guide.
3. Configure OBS to start streaming when launched
OBS documents the --startstreaming launch parameter as “Automatically start streaming.” Use it with a Windows Scheduled Task or another startup method so that launching OBS after a reboot can also start transmission. If the station relies on a particular OBS profile or scene, make sure the automated launch selects the intended configuration. Consult OBS Launch Parameters for the documented parameter.

For automated launches on Windows, OBS says to set the task’s working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe. This matters when the program is launched by a task rather than opened from its usual shortcut. Configure and test the task before relying on it for recovery.
4. Allow time for the network to return
After a power failure or reboot, the computer may be ready before the router or internet connection. Add a startup delay and a retry or monitoring step, then check whether OBS is sending and YouTube is receiving. A 2024 OBS forum response describes a case where automatic reconnect did not resolve an initial connection failure; that is community experience, not an official guarantee. 5. Verify the recovered stream
- Confirm OBS reports that it is actively streaming.
- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, confirm that the intended event is selected and an incoming signal and stream health are shown.
- Check that the picture and audio are actually present. An OBS status indicator by itself does not confirm successful delivery to viewers.
Troubleshoot a stream that does not return
