How to Make a 24/7 YouTube Lofi Stream Restart Automatically with Windows Task Scheduler

You can use Windows Task Scheduler to launch OBS at startup or when you sign in, and you can test whether OBS also starts its streaming output. That does not guarantee a continuous 24/7 broadcast: a scheduled task can relaunch an application after a task failure, but it does not necessarily detect a stalled OBS process or a broken connection to YouTube.

The setup has three separate parts: Windows starts OBS, OBS sends the encoder feed, and YouTube makes the broadcast live. Configure and test each part before relying on the system unattended.

What automatic restarting can—and cannot—do

Task Scheduler can run OBS after Windows starts or after a user logs in. A task configured to restart after failure can also retry when Windows considers that task to have failed. Neither feature, by itself, checks whether a still-running OBS process is sending healthy video to YouTube.

• OBS running: Windows has launched the application.
• Encoder feed running: OBS is sending video and audio to YouTube’s ingest service.
• Broadcast live: YouTube has made the stream available according to the selected stream’s settings and event state.

These states are related but not interchangeable. Verify both OBS’s streaming status and the stream’s state in YouTube Live Control Room.

Prepare the YouTube stream and OBS

1. Set up the stream in YouTube Studio

1. If the channel has never streamed live before, enable live streaming in YouTube Studio first. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the workflow.
2. Create or select the intended stream in Live Control Room. Set its visibility and review the Auto-start and Auto-stop options. These choices affect whether starting or stopping the encoder starts or ends the broadcast; reused stream settings may carry the choices over, so check the specific stream you plan to use. YouTube’s live-stream settings guide describes the options.
3. Copy the stream URL and stream key for the encoder. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private. If it is exposed, an owner or manager can reset it in YouTube Studio, then update OBS with the new key. YouTube’s settings guide

2. Configure and test OBS manually

1. In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select the YouTube service or choose the option to enter a stream URL and key, then provide the credentials from YouTube. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe connecting the encoder with the URL and key.
2. Confirm the lofi scene, media source, audio, and encoder settings. Start streaming manually and check that OBS reports an active connection and that YouTube Live Control Room receives the feed.
3. Check whether the stream is actually live as intended. Depending on the event and Auto-start settings, starting OBS’s encoder output may not be the only action needed to start a scheduled broadcast. Follow the state shown in Live Control Room rather than assuming the encoder connection alone means the viewing page is live.

Automating a configuration that has not worked manually makes it harder to diagnose whether a problem is in OBS, Windows, the network, or YouTube.

Create a Task Scheduler task for OBS

Use At startup if OBS should be launched when Windows boots, or At log on if it needs the signed-in user’s desktop session. Microsoft documents both trigger types and actions that run a program or command. The exact OBS executable path depends on your installation.

1. Open Task Scheduler from the Windows Start menu and choose Create Task. A basic task can also be used, but a full task makes it easier to review the recovery settings.
2. On the General tab, give the task a recognizable name, such as Start OBS lofi stream. Choose the user account and logon behavior that match the OBS installation and profile you tested. If OBS needs an interactive desktop session, use a logon trigger and run it in that user’s session.
3. On Triggers, select New and choose At startup or At log on. Startup is earlier and does not wait for a user to sign in; logon waits for that session. 4. On Actions, choose New > Start a program. Set Program/script to the full path of the OBS executable installed on this PC. If you plan to pass an argument, put it in Add arguments only after validating it with your installed OBS version and profile.
5. Save the task. If Windows prompts for credentials or permissions, choose settings appropriate for the account and session in which OBS must run; then test the task with Run before depending on a reboot.

To create a task from a command line instead, Microsoft’s schtasks /create supports the startup and logon schedules above; its /tr parameter identifies the program or command to run. Confirm the executable path and command-line arguments for your own installation rather than copying an assumed path. Microsoft: schtasks /create

Make OBS start the encoder feed

Launching OBS opens the application; it does not necessarily start streaming. An OBS forum contributor recommends appending --startstreaming to the OBS executable target to start the feed automatically. This is community advice from March 2024, not a Microsoft or YouTube feature or a guarantee across OBS versions. OBS forum discussion

1. Before adding the argument to Task Scheduler, test the OBS command-line behavior with the version and profile you actually use. Confirm that the expected scene, YouTube settings, and stream output start correctly.
2. If it works for your setup, enter --startstreaming in the task’s Add arguments field, leaving the executable path in Program/script. Do not treat the argument as a way to start or verify YouTube’s broadcast state; check Live Control Room as well.
3. If it does not work, remove the argument and diagnose the OBS version, profile, account/session, and stream configuration before automating further.

Set a limited retry policy

Task Scheduler’s restart-on-failure behavior is for task failures. Microsoft’s setting requires both a restart count and a restart interval; configure a limited number of retries and a reasonable interval for your circumstances. Microsoft: RestartCount · Microsoft: RestartInterval

This policy does not establish that Windows will restart OBS if OBS remains open but its YouTube connection has dropped, nor does it detect frozen video or silent audio. For those conditions, a separate stream-health monitor or recovery mechanism would be needed.

Test the complete reboot and recovery path

Test on the actual Windows account, PC, network, OBS profile, and YouTube stream that will be used unattended. Check each state instead of relying only on the task’s success status.

1. Run the task manually and confirm that OBS launches with the intended profile and scene.
2. Confirm OBS begins sending the feed, if you configured automatic encoder startup, and that YouTube Live Control Room receives it.
3. Restart Windows and verify the selected startup or logon trigger behaves as expected.
4. Close OBS and test the task again. A failure retry is relevant only if Windows considers the task failed; a normal application closure does not by itself prove the retry behavior you want.
5. Test a delayed network connection if practical. After a power outage, the computer may boot before the router or other network equipment is ready. The OBS forum discussion raises this as a possible cause of an initial connection failure; it does not establish one delay that works for every setup. If needed, evaluate a delayed trigger or a separate retry mechanism, then test it with your own network.
6. Check OBS’s connection status and the incoming preview or live state in YouTube Live Control Room. A task marked completed is not proof that the stream is healthy.

Common problems and what to check

• OBS opens but no feed is sent: The task launched the application, but encoder startup may not have occurred. Test the command-line argument with the installed OBS version, or start streaming manually while diagnosing.
• OBS reports an active stream but the broadcast is not live: Check the selected stream’s Auto-start setting and any scheduled-event requirements in Live Control Room. Encoder connection and broadcast state are distinct.
• The task runs only after someone signs in: Check whether you chose At log on rather than At startup, and whether OBS needs an interactive user session. Use the trigger and account setup that match the session requirements you tested.
• The task starts before the internet is ready: A boot-time launch can race the router or connection after an outage. Test a delay or separate retry approach; do not assume Task Scheduler’s failure retry policy monitors a still-running OBS connection.
• The task says it succeeded, but video has stopped: Task success records the action’s execution, not stream health. Inspect OBS and YouTube, and use a monitoring or recovery mechanism designed to detect a lost feed if you need that behavior.
• The stream key may have been exposed: Reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS. Treat the key as a credential, not a shareable setting.

Copyright, archives, and 24/7 lofi streams

Automation does not grant permission to use music, artwork, or other material. Before looping lofi tracks, confirm you have the rights or licenses needed for the music and visuals, and review YouTube’s applicable policies. Repeatedly streaming material you do not control can create copyright and channel-policy risks even if the stream itself is technically stable.
