Separate weekend playlists require an extra step: OBS’s documented playlist controls handle playback, looping, and shuffle, but do not provide a day-of-week schedule. You’ll need to switch playlists yourself or set up a separately verified automation workflow.
Choose how the YouTube broadcast should work
YouTube distinguishes the live video event viewers watch from the audio-video feed an encoder sends. In YouTube’s API documentation, a broadcast is an event or video, while a stream is the feed; a stream can be associated with more than one broadcast in some cases. That distinction matters when deciding whether viewers should see one continuous watch page or separate scheduled events. Google for Developers explains broadcasts and streams.

Neither the YouTube nor OBS documentation cited here establishes an automatic weekend playlist schedule. Treat that as a separate automation requirement, not a setting in YouTube Live Control Room or OBS’s loop and shuffle controls.
Prepare music and confirm you can stream it
Use music you own or have permission to use for the intended livestream. Keep license and permission records accessible. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a detected match can cause an interruption or termination. Even if you have a license, YouTube says the rights holder may need to allowlist your channel. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

- Confirm that the permission covers livestreaming on YouTube, not just personal listening or offline use.
- Check whether the rights holder must allowlist your channel before you start.
- Keep proof of permission available in case a match interrupts the stream.
Build weekday and weekend playlists in OBS
For a playlist of multiple files
Install VLC so OBS can provide its VLC Video source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source, add the music files in the order you want, and select the available loop or shuffle behavior. OBS describes this source as allowing a playlist of items, unlike the single-item Media Source. The controls determine playback order and repetition; they do not schedule a playlist change by weekday. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation.
Create the weekday and weekend lists as separate playback configurations or otherwise keep their file selections distinct, then switch to the intended list at the appropriate time. The documented OBS page does not specify a calendar scheduler or an automatic playlist-switching procedure, so don’t assume that enabling loop or shuffle will perform the weekend change.

For one file played repeatedly
If the stream uses one recording rather than a multi-track playlist, add it as an OBS Media Source and enable its Loop setting. Use a VLC Video source when you need a list of multiple files.
Create and start the YouTube livestream
- Schedule the event: In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live → Manage → Schedule Stream. Reuse existing settings or create new ones. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe scheduling and connecting an encoder.
- Connect OBS: Configure the encoder with the stream URL and stream key shown for the event. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in screenshots, overlays, or public tutorials. Reset it if it is exposed.
- Start the encoder: Start the OBS output and wait for the preview to appear in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Go live and check access: Confirm the audio and video are correct, then make the event live as intended. Check that viewers can access it.
- Monitor the feed: Keep an eye on both OBS playback and YouTube’s live output. A loop setting does not itself provide monitoring or recovery if the encoder, computer, or connection stops.
Switch to a different playlist on weekends
For a reliable changeover, the weekend switch must be handled either by a person or by an automation layer you have independently verified. The OBS documentation cited here confirms playlist, loop, and shuffle playback, but does not document a day-of-week trigger. YouTube’s broadcast-and-stream documentation explains the relationship between events and feeds, not a weekend playlist scheduler.

- Manual change: At the planned changeover, switch the OBS playback source or its selected playlist and confirm the new music reaches YouTube.
- Automated change: Choose a scheduler or automation workflow only after verifying that it can change the active OBS playlist at the required time, continue playback correctly, and recover from errors. Test it before relying on it for a live channel.
- Separate events: If you use separate scheduled broadcasts for weekdays and weekends, configure and test the encoder’s playlist for each event. Separate events do not, by themselves, establish that the playlist changes automatically.
Plan for long runtimes and check the archive
YouTube Help states: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” This is a specific threshold, not a promise that an unbroken 24/7 broadcast will be archived indefinitely or that a stream longer than 12 hours cannot be archived. If you need replayable recordings, verify YouTube’s current behavior for your event setup and decide how you will handle long-running broadcasts. See YouTube’s encoder streaming guidance.

Before relying on a continuous schedule, test the full path from local playlist playback to the public YouTube event. YouTube advises previewing the stream, checking accessibility, monitoring audio and video quality, and testing encoder failover where applicable. Its live streaming tips cover those checks.
