You can use a Raspberry Pi as a small FFmpeg encoder to loop an ocean recording and send it to YouTube Live. You’ll need a YouTube-eligible channel, an audio file you have permission to stream, a video source (such as an ocean image or video), and a Raspberry Pi setup that can encode the chosen quality and sustain the upload. The command below is an illustrative starting point, not a verified recipe for every Pi, FFmpeg build, or media file.
Before you start
- A Raspberry Pi with boot media, a model-appropriate power supply, and a reliable network connection. Raspberry Pi’s setup guide covers preparing boot media and power; for headless use it recommends Raspberry Pi OS Lite and configuring remote access during setup: Raspberry Pi getting started.
- A channel enabled for live streaming. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days: YouTube: Get started with live streaming.
- An ocean ambience recording you own or are licensed to broadcast, plus a visual feed. Audio alone is not a complete video stream; use an appropriate still image or a visual loop.
- FFmpeg with the required input demuxers and video/audio encoders. Availability can vary with OS release, architecture, package source, and build.
Raspberry Pi OS is Debian-based, and its documentation recommends APT for software management: Raspberry Pi OS documentation. The reviewed documentation does not establish that a particular package command installs a build with every needed codec, so inspect your own installation rather than assuming encoder support.
Install and check FFmpeg
On Raspberry Pi OS, install software with APT according to the current OS documentation. Then check the installed FFmpeg build and its available encoders and formats:
ffmpeg -version
ffmpeg -encoders
ffmpeg -formats
Confirm that your build has encoders compatible with the intended stream, typically H.264 video and AAC or MP3 audio for YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS ingest settings. The exact package version and codec set are system-dependent; the FFmpeg documentation explains options and supported formats: FFmpeg documentation.

Prepare your audio and video inputs
Check the ambience recording
Use a file that FFmpeg can read and that you are legally allowed to stream. A recording being available online or sold in a library does not by itself establish that live broadcast is permitted. Review the source’s license and terms, including any attribution, commercial-use, or redistribution conditions.
Choose a visual source
Pair the audio with a suitable still image or ocean video loop. Choose a visual source that you also have rights to use. The settings for mapping, scaling, pixel format, timestamps, and encoding depend on that source and on your FFmpeg build; a still image and a moving video are not interchangeable in every command.

Loop the audio input
FFmpeg documents -stream_loop as an input option. Use -stream_loop -1 to request indefinite repetition, and place it immediately before the audio input it applies to. This option loops the input; it does not, by itself, construct a complete YouTube video stream.
-stream_loop -1 -i ocean-audio-file
Check the actual filename and format, and verify that the installed build handles it as expected. A long-running broadcast also needs an ongoing video stream and compatible audio/video mapping and timestamps.

Create the YouTube Live stream and protect the key
- Open YouTube Studio and enter Live Control Room.
- Create a stream or select the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room into your encoder configuration. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains where to find and use them: YouTube: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
- Keep the stream key private: it acts as a credential that lets an encoder send video to your stream. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement.
Do not paste a real stream key into a public script, screenshot, forum post, or shared log. Confirm live streaming is enabled before debugging the encoder; channel eligibility and restrictions can prevent a technically correct feed from going live.
Choose compatible settings and test
Protocol and codecs
YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264 video, and AAC or MP3 audio among its encoder settings. It recommends RTMPS because it encrypts data in transit to Google’s servers. Use the protocol and ingest URL shown for your stream.

Bitrate, keyframes, and audio
- YouTube recommends CBR encoding and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz for stereo audio and 128 kbps stereo audio. These are platform recommendations, not a requirement that every source file already have those properties.
- Choose video bitrate according to resolution and frame rate using YouTube’s current bitrate table. The Pi must encode reliably at the chosen settings, and your upload connection must sustain the combined stream bitrate with headroom.
Settings guidance and the current bitrate table are on YouTube’s live encoder settings. There is no single bitrate that suits every resolution, frame rate, Pi model, and connection.
Latency and preflight
Run an upload speed test, then test the actual combination of audio, visual source, and settings before making the broadcast public. Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages and resolve warnings before relying on a continuous ambience stream. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering; for a noninteractive ambience broadcast, standard or normal latency is a reasonable starting point.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a feed | Channel eligibility, ingest URL, stream key, and selected protocol | Confirm live streaming is enabled, copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, and reset the key if it may have been exposed. |
| FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder or format | Installed build’s codec and format support | Inspect ffmpeg -encoders and ffmpeg -formats; use a build with compatible support for the selected inputs and outputs. |
| Audio repeats but video stops or is absent | Video input duration, mapping, timestamps, and looping behavior | Check that the visual input continues for the intended broadcast and that the command maps both audio and video correctly. The audio loop option applies only to the input placed after it. |
| Stream health warns or playback stutters | Upload capacity, encoder load, bitrate, and keyframe interval | Test at the intended quality, lower resolution or bitrate if the Pi or connection cannot sustain it, and follow YouTube’s current stream-health guidance. |
| Audio/video drift or playback errors | Input timestamps, source compatibility, and output settings | Test the exact media and FFmpeg build before going public; mapping and timestamp handling depend on the chosen sources and command. |
