To run birdsong continuously with FFmpeg on Ubuntu, send an audio source from FFmpeg to a separately configured streaming server, such as an Icecast endpoint, and supervise the process so it can be restarted after an exit or host reboot. FFmpeg handles media input and output; it is not, by itself, a complete public radio service. The exact command depends on your source, Icecast configuration, installed FFmpeg build, and the audio formats your server and listeners accept.
What you need for a 24/7 birdsong stream
Plan for three separate parts: an audio source, FFmpeg to read and send it, and a listener-facing streaming endpoint. FFmpeg can work with regular files, pipes, network streams, and capture devices, and takes its output destination from the command line. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.
- Source: Decide whether you are streaming a recording, a sequence of recordings, or audio captured live. A single file reaching its end does not automatically create an endless program; arrange enough content or a suitable looping setup.
- Streaming endpoint: For a public or multi-listener stream, configure a separate streaming server. Icecast is one option supported as an FFmpeg output protocol.
- Process supervision: Arrange for FFmpeg to start when the host boots and restart if it exits. This is different from reconnecting an individual network request.
- Rights and format checks: Confirm that you may rebroadcast the audio, and verify the endpoint’s accepted audio formats and listener compatibility before choosing encoding settings.
The steps below show the configuration decisions and command shape. They are not a tested, universal Ubuntu service recipe: the available documentation does not establish a particular Icecast account, a complete looping birdsong example, or a ready-made systemd unit.
Check your Ubuntu FFmpeg build
FFmpeg protocol options can vary with the version and configuration installed on your machine. Ubuntu Noble (24.04 series) has release-specific FFmpeg protocol documentation, but that does not guarantee the same options in every Ubuntu release or build. Check the version and local documentation before using an option:

ffmpeg -version
man ffmpeg-protocols
Use the locally installed manual pages and the documentation for your chosen streaming server to confirm the options and URL format available in your setup.
Configure an Icecast destination
FFmpeg documents this Icecast URL shape:
icecast://[username[:password]@]server:port/mountpoint
Replace the bracketed parts with the credentials, host, port, and mountpoint configured on your Icecast server. The documentation describes options for stream name, genre, description, URL, public or private listing, mountpoint password, TLS, and content-type override when the content type is not audio/mpeg. See the FFmpeg Icecast protocol documentation and match its settings to the server you actually run.

- Keep passwords out of examples, shared shell history, and logs where possible.
- Use the mountpoint and authentication settings expected by your server; do not assume that an example URL is a working account.
- Configure TLS when supported and appropriate for your endpoint.
- Test the resulting stream from a listener client before treating it as live.
Choose input and audio settings
Build the FFmpeg command around the real source. An audio file, a playlist or sequence, a capture device, and a network input require different input handling. Confirm that the source remains available for the intended duration; if a file ends, FFmpeg cannot provide new birdsong unless your input arrangement supplies more audio.
Do not assume a universal best codec, bitrate, channel count, or sample rate. The right choice depends on what Icecast accepts and what your intended listeners can play. Check both, then test representative clients. The official FFmpeg documentation establishes the available protocol controls, not an optimal birdsong encoding for every server.

When putting the final command together, specify the input and the Icecast output URL using the syntax documented for your build and server. Avoid publishing a credential-bearing command. Since the correct codec and input-loop behavior depend on your setup, validate those choices locally rather than copying a supposedly universal command.
Keep the source and FFmpeg process running
Continuous playback has two distinct failure points: the audio input may run out or become unavailable, and the FFmpeg process may exit or the Ubuntu host may reboot. Address both. Configure the source to provide content for the period you intend to broadcast, then use an operating-system process supervisor to start FFmpeg at boot and restart it if it exits. The exact service configuration depends on your Ubuntu version, command, and deployment; consult the documentation for the supervisor you choose rather than treating a reconnect flag as a complete service setup.

FFmpeg documents HTTP protocol reconnect options, including retries after disconnection before end-of-file and reconnect_at_eof, which treats EOF as an error and can be useful for endless or live streams. It also documents reconnect behavior for certain network and HTTP errors and streamed or non-seekable inputs. These are HTTP protocol behaviors, not guarantees that an Icecast output, finite source file, or complete Ubuntu service will recover without interruption. Check FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol options and confirm that each option applies to the input or output protocol you are using.
Why not use FFmpeg as the public HTTP server?
FFmpeg documents an experimental HTTP server mode, but its command-line tool does not implement multi-client mode. The project documentation warns: “This is not yet implemented in ffmpeg.c and thus must not be used as a command line option.” See the FFmpeg HTTP protocol documentation. For a public broadcast that needs to serve multiple listeners, use an appropriately configured streaming server instead of relying on FFmpeg’s experimental HTTP server mode.

Test the stream and troubleshoot failures
- Check the source first. Confirm that the file, device, or network input exists and can be read by the user running FFmpeg.
- Check the FFmpeg output. Review its error output for an invalid URL, rejected authentication, unsupported option, or encoder/format problem. Confirm options against
ffmpeg -versionand your installed manual pages. - Check the Icecast server. Verify host, port, mountpoint, password, TLS expectations, and accepted content type against the server configuration.
- Listen from a client. Test actual playback, not just a successful FFmpeg process. Check audio compatibility with the clients your audience is likely to use.
- Test recovery deliberately. Confirm separately what happens when the input ends, the network drops, FFmpeg exits, or the host reboots. Do not infer recovery from one successful reconnect.
- No audio after the file ends: The source has reached EOF. Provide additional audio or configure an appropriate continuous input arrangement.
- Connection or authentication failure: Recheck the Icecast server address, port, mountpoint, and credentials. Ensure the account is allowed to publish to that mountpoint.
- Listeners cannot play the stream: Check the encoded format and content type against the server and client requirements; test another supported configuration if necessary.
- Stream stops after FFmpeg exits or Ubuntu restarts: Configure process supervision and startup behavior. HTTP reconnect options do not replace this.
- A reconnect option is rejected or has no effect: Confirm the installed FFmpeg build and whether that HTTP option applies to the protocol and direction involved.
Confirm the recording is cleared for rebroadcast
Having a birdsong recording does not establish permission to stream it publicly. Check the license and terms for your own recording, a library recording, or a field recording before broadcasting. Confirm that the terms cover the intended public rebroadcast and any conditions such as attribution; do not assume that a recording is free to use simply because it is available online.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube channel rather than an Icecast radio stream, StreamNeo is a different option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer, OBS, or home connection has to stay on. It is for YouTube and plays uploaded video; it is not a camera-based live stream or an Icecast destination.
- Nothing has to stay on at home.
- Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot with no re-encoding or quality tiers.
- It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
The same product is included on every plan: one always-on stream, pooled storage of 10 GB per slot across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops, and StreamNeo team support. Plans are available for a day, a week, a month, 6 months, or a year, and can be cancelled any time. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide.
