You can stream a playlist of Hindi videos to YouTube Live with FFmpeg by putting the files in an FFmpeg concat text file, encoding the sequence to YouTube’s ingest requirements, and sending it to the event’s server URL with its stream key. This guide assumes “playlist file” means FFmpeg’s plain-text concat format; an M3U or M3U8 playlist is a different format and cannot be used as the example below without adapting the workflow. Hindi audio or text does not require a special FFmpeg playlist mode.
Before you start: confirm the playlist format and video files
The concat demuxer reads a text script that lists local media files and presents them in order. It is a good fit for a sequence of compatible clips, and can avoid re-encoding when their streams match. It is not a general-purpose playlist reader: the example here is not an M3U/M3U8 file.
- Install FFmpeg with the H.264 encoder available; the example uses
libx264. Check your build withffmpeg -encoders. - Put the playlist and video files in a working directory. Prefer relative filenames.
- For stream-copy concatenation, files need matching streams, codecs, time bases, and compatible stream layout. Different frame rates, codecs, resolutions, or audio streams can make this method fail or produce glitches.
- Have access to the YouTube Live Control Room event settings so you can copy that event’s server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password.
How do I create an FFmpeg concat playlist?
-
Create a plain-text file named
playlist.txtin the same directory as your clips. For the concat demuxer, make the first line exactlyffconcat version 1.0—with no leading spaces or byte-order mark. -
Add one
filedirective per clip, in playback order. For example:Recommended: Update Every Outdated Driver on Your PC in One Scan - Free →Recommended: PC Feels Slow? ffconcat version 1.0 file 'video-01.mp4' file 'video-02.mp4' file 'video-03.mp4' -
Save the file as plain text. Paths containing spaces, apostrophes, or other special characters need correct quoting and escaping. The concat demuxer’s default safe mode allows safe relative paths and rejects some absolute or unusual paths.
-
Check that each listed file exists and can be read by FFmpeg before starting a live event. You can inspect a file’s streams with
ffprobe -hide_banner 'video-01.mp4'.
FFmpeg adjusts timestamps so the first file starts at zero and later files follow it. Incorrect or missing duration information can cause timestamp or transition problems; where durations are known reliably, explicit duration directives in the concat file may help.
How do I send the playlist to YouTube Live?
Open the event in YouTube Live Control Room and copy its ingest server URL and stream key from the event’s stream settings. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your event. Use placeholders in scripts or documentation, never a real key.

The following is a structural template, not a tested turnkey command. It assumes 30 fps, a two-second GOP, H.264 video, AAC audio, and a bitrate chosen for the actual output. Replace the URL and key with the event-specific values from YouTube Studio.
ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
-r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k
-f flv 'rtmps://YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY'
In this example, -re reads the input at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as possible; -f concat selects the concat demuxer; -safe 0 relaxes path checks; -g 60 and -keyint_min 60 set a 60-frame GOP, which is two seconds at 30 fps; and -f flv packages the output for the RTMP-family connection. Use -safe 0 only with a playlist you trust. Keeping the playlist and files together with safe relative paths is preferable when possible.
Choose output settings for your actual video
YouTube’s current general encoder guidance recommends RTMP/RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), supported codecs, and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, YouTube’s current table recommends 10 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30—not for every resolution, codec, or frame rate. Check the current YouTube live encoder settings and select a matching value rather than copying the template’s 4,500 Kbps blindly.

- Build Quality: Solid ABS shell and well made components in one place make it strong and convenient to travel
- Programming Lessons: This raspberry pi 5 learning kit ships with step by step instructions and provides 21 lessons to take you through identifying components reading code and running it in the terminal
- Resolution and frame rate: Match what you intend to send and what the source material supports. If you set
-r 30, the example encodes at 30 fps; it does not preserve every source frame rate unchanged. - Keyframes: At 30 fps, 60 frames is two seconds. For a different frame rate, calculate a GOP that remains about two seconds.
- Bitrate: Set

The example’s-bufsizeis twice its example video bitrate; adjust it as appropriate for the chosen output. - Audio: The example uses stereo AAC at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps, values within YouTube’s published RTMP/RTMPS audio recommendations. Confirm that the playlist contains usable audio and listen for clipping or silence.
Run a speed test, then do a private or otherwise appropriate preflight with representative motion and audio. In Live Control Room, check the preview and stream health before relying on the feed for an event, and monitor it while live.

The concat demuxer expects compatible streams. If one clip is H.264 with AAC audio and another has a different codec, frame rate, stream layout, or time base, a stream-copy-style concatenation cannot be assumed to work. Normalize the clips first or use FFmpeg’s concat filter, which is designed for concatenation workflows that re-encode.
| Approach | Best suited to | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Concat demuxer | Files with matching stream properties and a workflow that can retain their encoded streams | Can avoid re-encoding, but incompatible inputs or unreliable durations can cause errors or artifacts. |
| Concat filter | Inputs that need normalization or re-encoding as part of concatenation | Offers a route for dissimilar clips, but requires encoding choices and additional processing. |
Before converting a full playlist, inspect each file and decide on a common output resolution, frame rate, video codec, and audio format. A filter-based command depends on the exact number and properties of the inputs, so there is no safe universal replacement command for arbitrary files.

How do I keep the playlist playing?
A concat list is finite: after its last file, FFmpeg reaches end-of-input and the live feed stops. FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 option means repeat an input indefinitely, but that does not establish that placing the option around a concat-demuxer input will reliably replay the whole playlist as a unit. Do not treat it as a guaranteed whole-list loop.
If you need continuous replay, use a repeat strategy that explicitly regenerates or repeats the complete sequence, then test the end-of-list transition, timestamps, and audio continuity before going live. The exact approach depends on the input and FFmpeg workflow; a finite concat file alone does not create a 24/7 stream.
When should I use HLS instead of RTMPS?
For the basic example, RTMPS is the straightforward choice. YouTube documents HLS ingestion for HDR or codecs that RTMP does not support. HLS is a separate packaging and delivery workflow, not a drop-in URL change: YouTube specifies 1–4 second segments, TS format, HTTPS POST/PUT, no byte ranges, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. YouTube also notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. Follow YouTube’s HLS ingestion setup if your codec or HDR workflow requires it.

Common problems and fixes
- “Unsafe file name” or path rejected: Use safe relative filenames in the working directory. If absolute or unusual paths are essential,
-safe 0relaxes checks; only use it with a trusted playlist. - Concat errors, missing streams, or broken transitions: Confirm every path is correct and inspect stream properties. Normalize or re-encode incompatible files, or use the concat filter instead of assuming stream compatibility.
- Video reaches the end and stops: The list is finite. Build and test a strategy that repeats the entire sequence; do not assume
-stream_loop -1around the concat input guarantees whole-playlist looping. - YouTube does not receive the feed: Verify that you copied the current event’s server URL and stream key, that the event is ready to receive an encoder, and that the key was not mistyped or exposed. If a key may have leaked, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Stream health warns about bitrate or keyframes: Match the encoder output to YouTube’s current recommendation for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. Check that CBR is being used and that the GOP is about two seconds, never over four seconds per YouTube’s guidance.
- Preview has no audio or bad audio: Check the source clips’ audio streams and the FFmpeg audio settings, then test the complete playlist’s transitions before the live event.
- FFmpeg says the encoder is unavailable: Confirm the installed build includes
libx264, or choose an encoder available in that build and compatible with YouTube’s current ingest guidance.
Copyright and YouTube channel considerations
Having permission to play a Hindi song or video privately does not necessarily mean you have the rights needed to stream it publicly. Confirm that you have the necessary rights for every video and audio track, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-streaming rules before broadcasting. Repeated or minimally transformed third-party material can also raise monetization and reused-content issues; a technically successful FFmpeg stream does not establish that a channel or stream complies with YouTube’s policies.
For a practical preflight, review the copyright safety checklist, and verify rights and policy status for your own channel and content.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded videos playing on a YouTube channel without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps the stream running from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
