Start by copying the current stream key and matching server URL from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then replace the values in FFmpeg’s output configuration. A stale key, a key from another stream, or a mismatched destination is a more direct place to start than changing codecs or bitrate. If YouTube still rejects the feed, use the exact error and stream-health message to check RTMPS, media settings, FFmpeg, and your outbound connection.
1. Get the current key and server URL
- In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go Live > Stream.
- Copy the stream key shown under Stream key and the server URL shown for that stream. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses both values; a key identifies where the encoder sends its feed and lets YouTube accept it. See YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
- Replace the values in your FFmpeg output configuration with those current details. Check that the key belongs to the intended stream rather than a saved or reused setup.
YouTube’s first-line recommendation for third-party encoder startup errors is to get a new key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. If the key may have been exposed, reset it there and update FFmpeg with the newly generated key. Treat it like a password: do not put it in a public command, screenshot, issue report, or log. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” See Manage live stream settings and Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
2. Check FFmpeg’s output destination
FFmpeg’s RTMP output URL combines a server with path components; its documentation gives the generic shape rtmp://server[:port][/app][/instance][/playpath] and a publishing example using -f flv. YouTube supplies the actual server and key for your stream. Do not assume one path layout works for every YouTube configuration: use the values shown in Live Control Room. See FFmpeg RTMP protocol documentation.
This schematic command shows where the destination goes; SERVER, APP, and STREAM_KEY are placeholders, not a working YouTube endpoint or credentials:

ffmpeg -re -i INPUT -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv 'rtmp://SERVER/APP/STREAM_KEY'
Inspect the final destination locally for accidental whitespace, a truncated key, stray quotation marks, an old server URL, a missing path component, or a key copied from another stream. Do not post the full output URL when it contains the key.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
3. Follow the error message’s branch
RTMPS, SSL/TLS, or timeout errors
Use this branch when the endpoint or error specifically involves RTMPS. In Live Control Room, use the lock icon beside Stream URL to get the RTMPS URL, then pair it with the current key. For an SSL certificate error, YouTube advises checking that the URL uses rtmps and the correct server; where appropriate to the reported error, try port 443. For a connection timeout, check the URL and confirm that your FFmpeg build supports RTMPS. Do not switch protocols just because a key was rejected. See YouTube Help: Troubleshoot live streaming issues.
Key accepted, but stream health is poor or no usable picture or sound appears
A credential problem and an unsuitable media configuration are different faults. Once the key and destination are correct, compare the output with YouTube’s current encoder guidance: RTMP or RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; up to 60 frames per second; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate encoding. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its advanced recommendations include square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and Rec. 709 for SDR. See YouTube Live encoder settings.

For standard H.264, YouTube’s published table gives these minimum and recommended video bitrates:
| Output | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 360p at 30 fps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 480p at 30 fps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s listed H.264 settings, not a guarantee that a stream with those settings will connect. The page includes other codec and resolution combinations; consult it rather than extrapolating an unlisted value. YouTube recommends testing with representative movement and audio, running a speed test, and monitoring stream health.

Credentials and settings look right, but connection or encoding still fails
- Update the third-party encoder and check FFmpeg’s reported errors.
- Check the picture and sound in the encoder’s local preview, along with CPU load; a local feed problem points away from the stream key.
- Test whether your outbound connection can sustain the chosen bitrate and remain stable.
- When the preview appears in Live Control Room, use its stream-health messages to choose the next fix. If the local feed looks healthy but YouTube receives it unreliably, investigate network egress. YouTube notes that reports of problems from multiple viewers can indicate an encoder issue.
For a third-party software login integration rather than a stream-key setup, YouTube directs users to that software’s support team because it may need an update for YouTube Live. See Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream and YouTube Live encoder settings.
4. Run a safe test before the real stream
- Use the intended stream’s current key and server URL, and keep the key private.
- Start FFmpeg with the output settings you plan to use. Check its output for connection or encoding errors without sharing any line that reveals the key.
- Confirm that YouTube’s Live Control Room receives the feed; review the preview and stream-health messages.
- Test representative motion and audio at the intended resolution and frame rate. Adjust settings or investigate the connection according to the specific warning before relying on the setup for an event.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you need a prerecorded video or playlist to keep a YouTube channel live, StreamNeo is an alternative to maintaining an FFmpeg process on your own computer: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded material from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. Your upload streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required, once per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
