For a YouTube Live stream encoded with H.264, start at 30,000 Kbps for 4K at 30 fps or 35,000 Kbps for 4K at 60 fps. Those are YouTube’s current recommended encoder settings, not a guarantee your internet connection can sustain them. Test the actual upload path with representative footage and audio before leaving a 24/7 stream running.
If you stream to another platform, check its current encoder guidance instead: these figures apply to YouTube Live.
Choose a bitrate for your resolution, frame rate, and codec
Use the recommendation for the exact 4K frame rate and encoder you plan to send. YouTube lists separate guidance for H.264 and for AV1/H.265; do not treat the latter ranges as H.264 targets.

These figures are from YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance, accessed in 2026. They are platform ingest recommendations, not a bitrate formula for every service or a promise of uninterrupted delivery. YouTube transcodes live streams for viewers on different devices and networks, but that does not eliminate the need for a stable feed from OBS.

Set OBS to match the target stream
- Confirm the destination and frame rate. This guide assumes YouTube Live. Decide whether the nature footage should run at 30 or 60 fps; use the matching row above.
- Set the video output. In OBS, open Settings > Video and set the output resolution to 3840 × 2160 and the frame rate to the intended 30 or 60 fps. The bitrate figures only make sense when the output actually matches those settings.
- Set the encoder bitrate. Open Settings > Output, select the streaming output controls, and enter the bitrate appropriate to the chosen encoder and frame rate. For H.264, enter 30,000 Kbps at 4K30 or 35,000 Kbps at 4K60. OBS labels and available encoder choices can vary by version and hardware; verify that the selected codec is the one whose guidance you are applying.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and copy its stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: do not show it on screen or share it. YouTube’s encoder guidance and live setup documentation are available at support.google.com/youtube/answer/2853702.
- Save a fallback configuration. Keep the 4K profile, then create a separate OBS profile for a lower-resolution or lower-bitrate fallback. OBS profiles can be used to switch among platform and resolution configurations; see OBS Profiles.
Preflight the stream before leaving it on
A 24/7 broadcast needs a sustained, stable upload, not merely a speed-test result. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and running a test stream with audio and motion similar to the intended program. For a nature ambience feed, test the actual scenes and soundtrack: quiet, static footage may behave differently from scenes with moving water, leaves, clouds, or wildlife.
- Run a controlled test using the planned resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, audio, and network connection. Use a private, unlisted, or otherwise controlled test setup available to your channel.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health indicators and messages, and check OBS’s dropped-frame status during the test. A short clean start is not enough; let the test run long enough to expose connection variation and competing upload activity.
- Check playback on a separate viewer connection and device. Confirm that video and audio continue, and look for buffering rather than assuming the OBS preview proves successful delivery.
- Repeat or extend the test if you change the network, encoder, resolution, frame rate, or content. YouTube’s current guidance is at Live encoder settings; OBS explains connection-related dropped frames at Dropped Frames.
Troubleshoot dropped frames and viewer buffering
OBS dropped frames can indicate that the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the selected bitrate. Viewer buffering can also result when the contribution feed is unreliable. Diagnose the delivery path before assuming the encoder needs more bitrate.

OBS’s guidance on buffering recommends reducing bitrate and, when necessary, resolution, quality, or frame rate; see Stream Connection Troubleshooting. Reduce load in sensible stages and run another test after each meaningful change. There is no universally correct lower fallback bitrate in the cited platform guidance: it depends on the connection and the chosen output.
