For a consistent YouTube Live picture, inspect each playlist clip and rotate its decoded frames before encoding. FFmpeg’s -c copy option cannot apply a rotation filter, and rotation metadata is not guaranteed to survive every muxer and live-ingest path. Test the exact playlist and output configuration before relying on it.
Why a rotated clip can appear sideways in a live playlist
A video can look upright in a desktop player because the file carries display-rotation metadata, even though its encoded picture is sideways. FFmpeg’s documentation describes -display_rotation as input per-stream metadata that overrides an existing display transform. With transcoding and autorotation enabled, FFmpeg applies the rotation during filtering; otherwise, it writes output rotation metadata only when the muxer supports it.
That distinction matters for a live playlist: the output muxer, protocol, YouTube ingest path, and playback client all affect whether metadata is retained and honored. The available documentation does not establish that every combination preserves or applies rotation end to end.
Inspect every playlist item before choosing a rotation
Do not assume all clips share the same dimensions or transform. Probe each source file, or review FFmpeg’s input log, for video dimensions and rotation/display-matrix information. ffprobe can report stream details in a format you can inspect:

ffprobe -v error -select_streams v:0 -show_entries stream=width,height:stream_side_data=rotation,displaymatrix -of json input.mp4Check the result against the clip itself. The correct transform depends on the source; a fixed angle for a mixed playlist can correct one item and turn another sideways. Decide on the output orientation and dimensions you want, then normalize each clip accordingly.
Choose between rotating pixels and preserving metadata
Recommended for dependable live presentation: bake in the rotation
When consistency is the goal, decode and rotate the frames before encoding. The displayed picture then has the intended orientation in its pixels, rather than depending on a downstream player to interpret a display matrix. Use the filter appropriate to the inspected source transform: for a 90-degree counter-clockwise rotation, for example, FFmpeg’s transpose=2 filter is commonly appropriate, but verify the source’s actual direction and metadata before using it.

A schematic single-file command is:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vf "transpose=2" -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 20 -c:a aac -b:a 128k output.mp4This example is not a universal playlist command or a guaranteed fit for every source. Select the filter and encoding settings for the clip and intended output. Make the output geometry consistent across playlist items, and decide how to handle differing frame rates and audio tracks.
Metadata-only handling: use only after confirming the full path
FFmpeg supports -display_rotation[:stream_specifier] rotation as an input option, where the value is in degrees counter-clockwise before display. With autorotation enabled while transcoding, FFmpeg applies that transform in the filter stage. In other cases, output metadata is conditional on muxer support. This route is suitable only if the output muxer and downstream playback path both preserve and honor the transform.

For H.264 elementary-stream signaling, FFmpeg’s bitstream-filter documentation describes the h264_metadata filter’s display_orientation modes: pass, insert, remove, and extract. Insert mode can use rotate and flip; extract mode attaches a display matrix as packet side data. This is not a guarantee that a container, live protocol, YouTube ingest, or viewer will apply the transform.
Why stream copy cannot rotate the video
With -c:v copy, FFmpeg copies compressed video packets rather than decoding frames. That avoids video re-encoding, but it also means FFmpeg cannot apply a transpose or other video filter. The FFmpeg stream-copy documentation explains that stream copy avoids decoding, filtering, and encoding; it can also fail if the target container cannot carry required stream information.

You may be able to copy audio while transcoding video, provided the audio codec is compatible with the output container and destination. Otherwise, encode audio to a compatible format. Do not combine a video filter with -c:v copy and expect the picture to rotate.
Match the output to YouTube Live and verify it
YouTube’s current live encoder settings list RTMP/RTMPS ingest and H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps. The guidance calls for constant bitrate (CBR) and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. Match the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to the stream you intend to send; these settings affect compatibility and delivery, not rotation itself.

For reference, YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations include 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are bitrate recommendations, not rotation settings. Check YouTube’s current guidance when configuring a stream because its published settings can change.
- Normalize representative clips individually and assemble the intended playlist using your chosen FFmpeg workflow.
- Send a short private or unlisted test stream through the same output muxer, protocol, and YouTube ingest configuration planned for the event.
- Check YouTube’s preview and playback for orientation, dimensions, transitions, and audio. Include clips with different source rotations and representative motion.
- Monitor stream health and correct any encoder or ingest warnings before scheduling a public broadcast.
YouTube’s live-streaming guidance advises testing with representative audio and video movement and monitoring stream health. An end-to-end test is especially important for metadata-only handling because FFmpeg’s documentation does not promise that a particular live path will preserve and apply the rotation.
Common rotation problems and fixes
- Video remains sideways after adding
-c:v copy: stream copy does not decode or filter frames. Transcode the video and apply the correct rotation filter. - One playlist item is upright, another is not: the clips may have different dimensions or display transforms. Probe and normalize each item instead of applying one assumed angle to the whole playlist.
- Rotation works in a local player but not in the live output: the player may honor metadata that the muxer or ingest path does not preserve or apply. Bake the rotation into encoded frames and test the actual live path.
- A metadata-only output still displays incorrectly: confirm muxer support and downstream handling. Neither the FFmpeg options nor H.264 display-orientation signaling guarantee YouTube playback behavior.
- The filtered output fails or has incompatible audio: check the selected codecs and container. Copy audio only when compatible; otherwise encode it to a supported format.
- The stream is unstable or YouTube reports ingest issues: verify RTMP/RTMPS, codec, CBR, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current settings. These delivery settings do not fix orientation, but they can affect whether the test stream is healthy.
