Keep the background image as the base layer of FFmpeg’s composition, then place the active video on top. Loop the still-image input so it continues supplying frames, and switch or concatenate only the video layer. Send the finished composition to YouTube Live with the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio.

How the background and video layers work

FFmpeg’s overlay filter puts its second input over its first: the first input is the main video, and the second is layered on top. For an opaque background image with a video playing over it, connect the image as the main input and the video as the overlay.

[background] [current-video] overlay [composite]

This is the filtergraph’s conceptual shape, not a complete command. A working command depends on your FFmpeg build, input files, audio, output format, and YouTube ingest settings. Map the completed composite to the encoder output rather than sending the background or video input by itself.

Keep the still image producing frames

A still-image input normally represents a single image. FFmpeg’s image2 demuxer documents a loop option for looping an image input. Check your installed build’s help and the image2 documentation for the option’s placement and syntax. Keep the background input active for as long as the composite needs to run.

Fit the video to the background canvas

Choose how to handle clips whose dimensions or aspect ratio differ from the background: scale them, crop them to fill the frame, or pad them to preserve the whole picture. FFmpeg provides scale, pad, and overlay placement options; see the filter documentation. Decide based on what must remain visible. For example, cropping can fill a widescreen canvas but may cut off content near the edges, while padding preserves the frame but leaves unused space.

Choose how FFmpeg should switch clips

Workflow Suitable approach What to check
Fixed sequence of prerecorded clips Use the concat demuxer to read files one after another, while keeping the background in the composition. The files need matching streams, including codecs and time base. Inaccurate duration metadata can cause artifacts or gaps.
Operator-selected or dynamically switched clips Keep the background as the lowest layer and change only the active video source using a multi-input filtergraph and suitable control logic. Plan how the switching trigger works, how inputs are managed, and how audio and timestamps stay continuous. The exact design depends on how the sources arrive and how switching is triggered.

The concat demuxer is intended for compatible files that play in sequence, not for arbitrary live source selection. See FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation for its requirements. If clips do not match, normalize or encode them consistently, or build a filtergraph that explicitly aligns dimensions, frame rates, timestamps, and audio before concatenation.

Plan for a clip reaching its end

Overlay framesync options determine what happens when an input ends. For a secondary input, the documented default eof_action behavior is to repeat its last frame. The pass behavior passes the main input through; endall ends both streams. Choose deliberately: depending on the graph, repeating the last video frame can leave that frame over the background, while passing the main input can reveal the background. Avoid a shortest setting that ends the composite when the still image’s first-frame duration expires. Check the overlay framesync options for the details available in your FFmpeg version.

Connect the FFmpeg output to YouTube Live

  1. Create or select the stream in YouTube Studio. Open the stream’s encoder settings and copy its server URL and stream key.
  2. Configure the FFmpeg output. Send the encoded composite to YouTube’s ingest server using those values. The visual filtergraph and YouTube connection are separate: the graph creates the picture, while the server URL and key connect the output to your stream.
  3. Protect the stream key. Treat it like a credential. Do not include it in screenshots, public command examples, or logs you share.
  4. Check the preview before the audience-facing broadcast. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview in Live Control Room and click Go live when ready. YouTube’s encoder streaming instructions describe this workflow.

YouTube currently lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS. Its live encoder settings recommend H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. Bitrate recommendations vary by resolution and codec, so consult that page for the current values instead of relying on a copied table that may become stale.

Test the composition before going public

  • Run representative clips, not just a still test card. Confirm the video sits over the image and that the chosen crop, scale, or padding looks right.
  • Test the actual switching behavior, including clip boundaries and the behavior when a clip ends.
  • Check audio continuity as clips change, and verify that the output’s resolution, frame rate, codec, keyframe interval, and bitrate match your intended YouTube settings.
  • Inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream-health warnings before and during the broadcast. A static image by itself does not demonstrate that moving video, audio, and switching will work under live conditions.

For a separate private monitoring stream and audience-facing broadcast, Google’s LiveBroadcasts API overview describes the distinction. The overview page reports it was last updated 2026-09-14 UTC.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely area to inspect What to do
The background disappears or the video is behind it Input order in the overlay graph Make the background the first, main input and the current video the second, overlaid input.
The background appears only briefly Still-image input duration or looping Check that the image2 loop option is applied to the image input using syntax supported by your installed FFmpeg build.
The composite stops when a clip ends Framesync end-of-file behavior or a shortest condition Review eof_action and any shortest setting. Select whether to hold the final video frame, pass through to the background, or end the output.
There is a gap, artifact, or abrupt transition between sequential clips Concat compatibility or duration metadata Check stream layouts, codecs, time bases, and duration accuracy. Normalize incompatible inputs before concatenating.
The video is stretched, cropped unexpectedly, or has bars Input dimensions, aspect ratio, and canvas treatment Choose an intentional scale, crop, or pad strategy and verify it using clips with representative dimensions.
YouTube does not show the stream or reports a connection problem Ingest server URL, stream key, output settings, or stream state Recheck the URL and key in YouTube Studio, protect the key, and compare the encoder output with YouTube’s current supported settings.
