Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To run ocean waves continuously on YouTube with OBS, create an encoder livestream in YouTube Studio, add its server URL and stream key to OBS, configure a scene with rights-cleared wave video and audio, then start OBS and take the stream live in YouTube’s Live Control Room. For a 24/7 broadcast, test the full setup first and plan recovery: OBS on a computer does not by itself guarantee an uninterrupted stream, and YouTube may not archive broadcasts longer than 12 hours.
What you need before going live
- A computer running OBS Studio. YouTube does not specify minimum hardware for this particular ambient-stream setup. The necessary capacity depends on your chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, and encoding method; test your actual setup rather than assuming a particular PC specification will work.
- A sustained internet upload connection. Use YouTube’s recommended bitrate for your chosen settings, run an upload-speed test, and leave headroom rather than trying to use the full measured upload capacity.
- Ocean footage and sound you have rights to use. The rights must cover livestreaming and, if you want replays, archived use as well. Check territorial and monetization terms in the license.
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming and access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
YouTube’s encoder livestream setup guidance describes the server URL and stream key workflow. Its encoder settings recommendations should be checked again when setting up, since the current bitrate table varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate.
Set up the YouTube livestream
- Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a livestream using the encoder workflow.
- Enter the stream’s title, description, visibility, and other stream options. For a planned 24/7 ambient channel, choose a title that accurately describes the footage and sound rather than implying a live camera feed if you are playing a recording.
- Copy the stream server URL and stream key from the stream setup page. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it. If you think it has been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio before streaming again.
For a scheduled encoder stream, YouTube’s Create a live stream with an encoder instructions include checking the incoming preview in Live Control Room and selecting Go live once the encoder feed is ready.
Configure OBS for ocean waves
Add the footage and sound
- In OBS, create a scene for the stream.
- Add the ocean footage as a media source. If you want it to repeat, enable looping in the source’s properties and preview the loop several times to check for black frames, abrupt visual jumps, or gaps.
- Add the intended wave audio, either embedded in the video or as a separate source. Set levels so the sound is clear without clipping, and confirm that the audio stays in sync with the picture.
- Check the OBS audio mixer and disable unintended sources such as desktop audio or a microphone if they are not part of the broadcast.
Connect OBS to YouTube
- Open OBS Settings and select Stream.
- If YouTube is available in the service list, select it and enter or connect the stream key as prompted. Otherwise, choose a custom streaming service and enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key in the matching fields.
- Keep the stream key private, then apply the settings.
OBS labels may vary by version. If the YouTube sign-in flow is offered, it may handle connection differently from manually entering a key; use the workflow displayed by your installed version and confirm the correct YouTube channel and scheduled stream.

Choose resolution, frame rate, and encoder settings
For a mostly static ocean scene, 60 frames per second or 4K is not automatically necessary. Higher resolution and frame rate can increase encoding work and required upload bitrate. Pick settings your computer and connection can sustain for long periods, then test with the real wave motion and audio.
| Setting | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | Choose based on visual detail, encoding load, and sustainable upload speed. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations differ by resolution and frame rate. |
| Codec | YouTube’s current encoder settings page lists H.264, H.265, and AV1; bitrate recommendations differ by codec. Choose a supported configuration your OBS setup can encode reliably. |
| Rate control | YouTube recommends CBR (constant bitrate) for live encoding. |
| Keyframe interval | YouTube recommends two seconds, and says not to exceed four seconds. |
| H.264 bitrate examples | YouTube’s current recommendation is 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps. These are examples for those specific settings, not universal values. |
| Latency | Lower latency can increase playback buffering. A non-interactive ambient stream usually has less reason to prioritize low latency than a broadcast that needs real-time audience interaction. |
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings table for the exact bitrate range for your codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube transcodes incoming live streams for viewers, but that does not guarantee a particular playback quality for every viewer or connection.

Test, start, and monitor the broadcast
- Before launch, run OBS with the actual scene, footage motion, and sound. Check for dropped frames, audio clipping or sync drift, loop seams, black frames, and unintended desktop audio.
- Run an upload-speed test and compare the result with your chosen stream bitrate, leaving capacity for connection variation and other network use.
- In OBS, start streaming. Wait for YouTube Live Control Room to show the incoming preview and check the stream health indicator.
- For a scheduled stream, select Go live in Live Control Room when the preview is ready. Continue monitoring stream health after launch.
- Keep access to the computer, OBS, and network available if you need to intervene. Test how you will recover from a computer, application, or internet failure; YouTube’s setup guidance does not promise that OBS will restart the broadcast automatically after such a failure.
Plan around archives, DVR, and 24/7 continuity
Break long broadcasts into sessions if you need replays
YouTube says a live stream shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived. A stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all, so an all-day broadcast is not a reliable way to preserve a replay. YouTube’s archive guidance states: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” If keeping an archive matters, schedule shorter sessions and keep a local recording backup.
Do not assume viewers can rewind a continuous stream
YouTube’s DVR guidance notes that rewind capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Consider whether rewind is important to your audience when deciding between one continuous broadcast and shorter scheduled sessions.

Design a handoff and recovery plan
A computer-based setup depends on the running machine, OBS, and network connection. If the stream stops, check whether OBS is still streaming, whether YouTube Live Control Room is receiving a signal, and whether the computer and internet connection are operating normally. Plan how you will restart the encoder and return to the YouTube preview if needed. Do not treat an unattended OBS session as a guarantee of 24/7 uptime.
Use media you are allowed to stream
YouTube requires streamers to have the necessary rights to the content in a livestream. It scans live broadcasts for third-party material; if identified content remains after a warning, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. A license does not necessarily prevent a Content ID interruption: the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and its Terms of Service.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand the monetization risk for repetitive ambient streams
There is no guarantee that an ocean-waves livestream will be accepted for monetization. YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live streams and identify repetitive or mass-produced content as potentially inauthentic, as well as content reused without significant original contribution. YouTube clarified this policy on July 15, 2025, and renamed it “inauthentic content.” A repeated scene or audio loop warrants particular care: original footage, sound design, or another meaningful creative contribution may help distinguish the work, but no single change guarantees approval.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube receives no signal | OBS is not sending output, or the server URL or key is incorrect. | Confirm OBS is streaming, recheck the URL and key against the correct YouTube stream, and look for an incoming preview in Live Control Room. If the key may have been exposed, reset it. |
| Stream health reports connection or encoding problems | The computer may not sustain the chosen encoding settings, or the upload connection may be insufficient or unstable. | Check OBS dropped frames and YouTube stream health. Test a lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate using YouTube’s current recommendations, then run a representative trial again. |
| Video or audio has gaps or sudden jumps | The media may not loop cleanly, or a source may be ending or restarting unexpectedly. | Preview several complete loops in OBS and inspect the source settings, file, and audio/video synchronization. |
| Unwanted computer sounds appear in the stream | Desktop audio or another mixer source is enabled. | Check the OBS audio mixer while monitoring a test and mute sources that are not part of the intended scene. |
| Livestream is interrupted over a rights claim or warning | YouTube detected third-party content; the channel may not be allowlisted even if a license exists. | Use content with documented rights for live use and contact the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting where appropriate. Do not restart with the same disputed material until the rights issue is resolved. |
| The broadcast ends and does not resume | A computer, OBS, or network interruption may have stopped the encoder feed. | Check the machine and network, restart OBS output if necessary, then confirm the preview and stream health in Live Control Room before going live again. |
| No replay appears after a very long stream | YouTube may not capture broadcasts longer than 12 hours. | Use shorter sessions when an archive matters and record a local backup. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use ocean footage or music from another creator?
Only if you have the rights for the intended livestream and any replay or monetization use; a license may still require the rights owner to allowlist your channel in Content ID.
Does OBS guarantee the stream will stay live after an internet or power failure?
No. The OBS workflow requires a running computer and connection; plan and test how you will restore the encoder feed.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Will YouTube monetize a looping ocean-waves stream?
That cannot be guaranteed. YouTube’s monetization policy may treat repetitive or reused content as inauthentic or ineligible.
