Start with 1280×720 at 30 fps, using a compatible hardware H.264 encoder already in the PC; if one is unavailable, test x264 with the veryfast preset. For x264, OBS’s 720p30 reference range is 3000–5000 kbps for low-to-medium-motion video. Treat that as a starting point, not a universal target: water, rain, leaves, and clouds can contain more motion and detail than a static scene, while your streaming service’s limits and your stable upload speed determine what you can actually use.

No single preset guarantees an old computer can stream continuously. Test the actual scene and stream path, then lower resolution or frame rate if the PC cannot encode smoothly.

Recommended OBS settings to try first

OBS control Starting setting How to judge or adjust it
Output resolution 1280×720 A resource-conscious baseline. The result depends on the encoder, scene, and PC.
Frame rate 30 fps Try this before 60 fps; OBS notes that 60 fps can be very taxing compared with 30 fps.
Encoder Compatible hardware H.264, if available; otherwise x264 Hardware encoding can reduce CPU work. Compare the picture and stability at the same bitrate rather than assuming an older hardware encoder will look better.
x264 preset veryfast If encoding overload persists after lowering resolution or frame rate, try a faster, lower-CPU preset such as superfast. Faster presets trade compression efficiency for reduced CPU load.
Rate control and video bitrate Use CBR when expected by your streaming service. For x264 at 720p30, use OBS’s 3000–5000 kbps reference range as a test range. This is an OBS low-to-medium-motion reference, not a platform limit or requirement. Check the service’s current requirements and keep the bitrate within stable upload capacity.
Audio bitrate Around 160 kbps OBS gives this as a general streaming starting point; reduce it if upload capacity is limited. No nature-sounds-specific bitrate is established.

OBS cautions that there is no universal “best settings” profile: the right choice depends on the particular setup and use case. Its system requirements also warn that compatible hardware alone does not guarantee streaming capability. See the OBS streaming guidelines and OBS system requirements.

Choose between x264 and hardware encoding

Try a compatible hardware encoder first

Hardware encoding moves real-time encoding work away from the CPU, which may help an older PC keep more headroom for OBS and other tasks. OBS lists NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, and Intel Quick Sync among its supported options, but support depends on the exact GPU or processor generation, drivers, operating system, and OBS build. Do not infer compatibility from a manufacturer name alone.

OBS’s hardware-encoder guidance lists GeForce 750 Ti / 900-series and newer for NVENC support, and Intel Core-i 2xxx-era integrated graphics for Quick Sync compatibility; it recommends newer QSV generations because earlier ones had lower quality. These are OBS compatibility statements, not recommendations to buy those parts. Check the exact machine and installed software against OBS hardware encoding guidance.

Use x264 if hardware encoding is unavailable or unsuitable

x264 performs encoding on the CPU. OBS describes x264 as capable of stronger image quality per bitrate in general, while hardware encoding can substantially reduce CPU load. On an older PC, spare processing capacity may matter more than compression efficiency. Compare the same nature footage at the same bitrate and inspect both image quality and sustained stability.

OBS’s x264 reference range for 1280×720 at 30 fps is 3000–5000 kbps for low-to-medium-motion video. Since moving water, rain, foliage, and clouds may need more detail than a static image, use a test rather than treating the range as a promise of a particular result. The range is from the OBS x264 guide; the article page does not state a publication year.

Set up and test the stream before relying on it

  1. Check the exact encoder choices in OBS. Open Settings → Output and inspect the available encoder, rate-control, bitrate, and preset options. Hardware options vary by machine, drivers, operating system, and OBS build.
  2. Set a conservative output target. Begin at 1280×720 and 30 fps. Choose the hardware H.264 encoder if compatible; otherwise choose x264 and start at veryfast.
  3. Set bitrate for both the service and connection. If using x264 at 720p30, test within OBS’s 3000–5000 kbps reference range, but follow the streaming service’s current limits. Do not exceed what your upload connection can sustain reliably.
  4. Check audio separately. Around 160 kbps is OBS’s general streaming starting point; use less if upload is constrained.
  5. Run the OBS Auto-Configuration Wizard. Use its result as a starting point, not a guarantee. OBS says the wizard evaluates system and connection capability.
  6. Run a safe, sustained test of the complete path. Use a private, unlisted, or otherwise safe test stream where the service permits. Confirm the video loops as intended, listen for uninterrupted audio, and inspect OBS statistics and logs for encoding overload or dropped frames.
  7. Test recovery deliberately. Before depending on an unattended stream, verify how it behaves after a controlled network interruption. OBS’s overview describes an Automatic Reconnect control in Settings → Advanced; test it with your actual connection and streaming service.

A brief successful preview is not evidence that a PC will stay live around the clock. OBS recommends testing but does not certify a system for continuous uptime or specify a test duration that proves reliability. Check cooling and power settings as part of your own unattended-use preparation.

Fix encoding overload and dropped frames

First distinguish an encoding problem from a network problem. Check OBS’s status, statistics, and logs: encoding overload points to the PC’s real-time processing capacity, while dropped frames can indicate connection instability. Increasing bitrate will not fix either an overloaded encoder or an unstable connection.

  • Encoding overload: lower output resolution or frame rate first. If x264 is still overloaded, try a faster preset such as superfast. OBS specifically recommends reducing resolution and FPS for x264 overload, then lowering the preset if needed.
  • Network instability: check that the selected bitrate is within the streaming service’s limits and your stable upload capacity. Reduce bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it.
  • Too much scene processing: simplify the scene where practical. A single media source or loop, fewer animated overlays, and fewer heavy filters can reduce unnecessary work; these are practical setup measures, not guaranteed fixes.
  • Unsure which encoder performs better: test compatible hardware encoding and x264 on the same scene at the same bitrate. Compare CPU headroom, image quality, compatibility, and stability over a sustained test.
  • Considering an advanced NVENC tuning option: OBS 31.0 describes “Ultra High Quality” tuning as optimized for live-action artifacts such as camera sensor noise, while noting that it significantly reduces throughput. It is not a sensible default for an old PC; test encoder load and stability before using it.

What is different about a 24/7 stream?

There is no special encoder preset that makes a stream 24/7. Continuous operation adds unattended recovery and reliability concerns to the ordinary image-quality and resource trade-offs. Test the full stream path, including the media loop and reconnect behavior, and do not treat a short successful run as proof of round-the-clock reliability. OBS says settings depend on the setup and advises testing; it does not publish a guarantee that an old PC can stream continuously.
