To diagnose a YouTube stream that keeps disconnecting from a Kolkata VPS, line up timestamped FFmpeg stderr with YouTube Live Control Room health messages, then check the media, encoder load, outbound VPS capacity and stream settings in that order. A “reconnect” message shows a transport event; on its own, it does not identify the cause or prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.

Why a YouTube stream drop needs more than one log

FFmpeg reports what its process and configured inputs or outputs observe. YouTube Live Control Room reports the condition of the stream as YouTube receives it. Those are different views of the same event. Compare them by timestamp rather than treating either one as a complete diagnosis. YouTube says Live Control Room provides stream-health status and messages (Live stream metrics); its error guidance describes timestamped errors and suggested corrections (Live streaming error messages).

The city name does not establish a network fault. Without the VPS provider and plan, the incident times, the actual outbound route, measurements from that VPS and its FFmpeg log, there is no evidence that a Kolkata-specific route is responsible. The same checks apply wherever the server is located.

Preserve evidence for each drop

Before changing flags or bitrate, save enough information to reconstruct one incident. Record times in UTC so the FFmpeg timeline can be compared with YouTube’s messages and the VPS operator’s records.

  • The UTC time the stream degraded or stopped, and when it recovered, if it did.
  • The complete FFmpeg stderr around the event, not just a single line containing “reconnect.”
  • The full FFmpeg command line, with the stream key removed or replaced by a redaction.
  • The output of ffmpeg -version, including version and build/configuration details.
  • Whether FFmpeg exited, stayed running, retried, or continued emitting output after the message.
  • The exact YouTube Live Control Room health status or error text and its timestamp.
  • Whether the encoder output and any local archive remained playable and continued growing, plus CPU load around the incident.
  • The stream’s configured video and audio bitrates, and repeated outbound-capacity measurements taken from the VPS itself.

Never publish or send an unredacted live stream key. A process that remains alive is not necessarily delivering packets, and a successful connection attempt is not the same as continued output or healthy YouTube ingest.

Identify which connection and protocol the log refers to

Read the command line to distinguish the input side (where FFmpeg gets media) from the output side (where it sends the stream), and identify the protocol used on each. This matters because FFmpeg’s reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_streamed and related options are documented under HTTP protocol options, not as universal RTMP-publishing retry switches. The FFmpeg protocols documentation describes those HTTP options separately from RTMP parameters.

  • reconnect is an HTTP option to reconnect automatically when disconnected before EOF.
  • reconnect_at_eof treats EOF as an error and attempts to reconnect; it can be useful for live or endless streams delivered over HTTP.
  • reconnect_streamed extends the relevant retry behavior to streamed, non-seekable HTTP resources.

Those descriptions do not make the options general-purpose fixes for an RTMP or RTMPS output. Confirm which protocol and direction an option applies to, and whether the installed FFmpeg build supports it, before changing the command. FFmpeg protocol support can be selectively enabled or disabled at build time, so check the local ffmpeg -version output and the relevant command help for that build.

Separate media or encoder trouble from network trouble

First check whether FFmpeg is producing sound and video correctly. Inspect the encoder output and, if available, compare it with a local archive. Look for input or encoding errors, missing or damaged audio/video, a stalled archive, and CPU load that rises or remains saturated when the stream falters. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends inspecting the stream in the encoder, checking encoder errors and CPU load, and comparing a local archive where available. If the encoder output looks healthy, it recommends investigating the outbound connection (Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream).

  • The media or archive also fails: investigate the input source, timestamps, media and encoding load before blaming the network route.
  • The media remains healthy but FFmpeg reports output trouble: inspect the output protocol, command options, build support and stderr sequence.
  • The encoder appears healthy while YouTube reports a health or ingest error: use YouTube’s exact message and timestamp to check stream format, key and ingest configuration.

These categories can overlap. A network interruption may expose retry behavior, while a format problem can coexist with a connectivity issue.

Check VPS upload capacity and headroom

Measure sustained outbound capacity from the actual VPS that sends the stream; a test from a laptop or home connection says nothing about that server’s egress path. Repeat measurements under representative conditions and compare the results with the incident times, host load and any provider/network events.

YouTube says total streaming bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom (Streaming tips). That 20% figure is YouTube Help guidance; no publication year is stated on the accessed page. Shared network use can reduce the capacity available to the stream, so compare the measured usable capacity with the combined configured video and audio bitrates, not video bitrate alone.

Measure or setting Published guidance How to use it
Upload headroom YouTube recommends 20% room above the stream’s total bitrate; publication year not stated on the accessed page. If sustained VPS capacity is close to the stream’s total bitrate, reduce demand or resolve capacity limits before treating retries as the solution.
H.264, 720p at 30 fps 5 Mbps recommended by YouTube Help; publication year not stated on the accessed page. This is a platform recommendation, not a measurement of your VPS or a guarantee of stable delivery.
H.264, 1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps recommended by YouTube Help; publication year not stated on the accessed page. Compare the recommendation and your configured bitrate with measured sustained outbound capacity and headroom.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance provides recommended bitrate ranges by codec, resolution and frame rate. Use its page for the relevant combination rather than applying the two H.264 examples above to other settings (Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).

Compare FFmpeg events with YouTube stream health

Open the corresponding broadcast in Live Control Room and align its status messages and errors with the UTC times in FFmpeg stderr. The dashboard’s health view and YouTube’s error descriptions help distinguish what the receiving service reports from what the sending process reports. YouTube recommends testing before the event and monitoring stream health while it runs; its encoder guidance covers recommended protocols, codecs, frame rates, keyframe timing and bitrate settings.

Check the configured protocol and stream format against that current guidance. If YouTube reports a format error, follow the correction associated with the exact message; do not assume that every disconnect is caused by a codec or format setting. Conversely, a healthy-looking FFmpeg process does not establish that YouTube has accepted and is ingesting a healthy stream.

Use the evidence to decide what to fix or escalate

Likely area to investigate Evidence to compare Diagnostic distinction
Input or media FFmpeg input errors, local archive, audio/video condition Does the media itself degrade or stop at the same time?
Encoder resources Encoder errors and CPU load Does local encoding falter when the stream drops?
Output protocol or options Full redacted command, protocol, FFmpeg build, stderr sequence Is an option supported and applied to the correct protocol and direction?
VPS outbound network Measurements from the sending VPS, stream bitrate, headroom and correlated timestamps Does egress capacity or connectivity falter when the incident occurs?
YouTube ingest or configuration Live Control Room health messages, timestamped errors and stream settings Does YouTube report ingest or format trouble while local output appears healthy?

If the encoder and archive are healthy, sustained outbound capacity has sufficient headroom, and drops coincide with outbound connection trouble, send the VPS or network operator the UTC timestamps, relevant host metrics and route/destination evidence gathered using its accepted diagnostic procedures. YouTube’s general guidance says to contact the internet provider when connection problems are found; for a hosted server, the relevant operator is the VPS/network provider.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the outbound path appears stable but Live Control Room continues to report ingest errors, investigate the exact YouTube message against the stream key, format and encoder configuration. Without those measurements and logs, the available facts cannot establish that the VPS provider, a Kolkata route or YouTube is responsible.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream from uploaded, pre-recorded video rather than diagnosing a live camera or an existing FFmpeg broadcast, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps it running without a computer or home connection left on. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot with no re-encode or quality tiers; if YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It is a YouTube-only service and does not stream live from a camera. Start the free day at StreamNeo registration.
