If OBS shows network Dropped Frames, lower or stabilize the stream bitrate and troubleshoot the connection to YouTube’s ingest server. If OBS instead reports Rendering Lag or Encoding Overloaded, reduce GPU or scene load. NVENC being selected does not, by itself, mean the encoder is the problem.
First identify which OBS counter is rising
Open OBS’s Stats window while streaming or running a representative test. The wording matters: OBS tracks network drops separately from rendering lag and encoding overload, and each points to a different bottleneck. You can have more than one at once, so change one thing at a time and retest.
| OBS symptom | What it points to | First response |
|---|---|---|
| Network Dropped Frames | The connection to the ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the selected bitrate. | Check stable upload capacity, reduce bitrate if needed, and troubleshoot the network path. |
| Rendering Lag | OBS may not have enough GPU capacity to composite the scene in real time. | Free GPU capacity and simplify demanding scenes or sources. |
| Encoding Overloaded | OBS cannot encode frames fast enough with the current workload and settings. | Reduce output demands or competing workload, then retest. |
OBS says network dropped frames are extremely unlikely to be caused by OBS itself. Its official Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, published September 30, 2024, defines them as a connection to the remote server that is unstable or unable to keep up with the set bitrate.
Fix network dropped frames
Set a bitrate your connection can sustain
Run an upload-speed test and use the result as a ceiling, not a promise of steady capacity. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting-point heuristic. Actual upload capacity can fluctuate, and other devices or applications may be using bandwidth, so leave headroom and test under normal household conditions.

YouTube’s codec-specific recommendations are reference points, not guarantees that your connection can sustain them:
| Output | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These examples come from YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance; use a lower rate if your stable upload capacity requires it. Lowering bitrate targets a network constraint. Lowering resolution or frame rate can also reduce rendering and encoding work, but changes picture detail or motion smoothness.
Test the connection to YouTube’s ingest server
- If YouTube offers another ingest server or endpoint, try it. You can also test another streaming service as a diagnostic: if the issue appears only with one service, that helps isolate the path, but it does not fix a service-specific problem.
- Use Ethernet temporarily to check whether Wi-Fi instability is involved. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi may be unstable; Ethernet is a diagnostic, not a guarantee.
- Restart the modem and router, inspect or test the network cable, and check for problems with the network adapter or other devices. If you are unsure about replacing hardware, contact your ISP first. Persistent drops may involve ISP-side changes or route congestion.
- Check whether other devices or applications are saturating upload bandwidth during the stream.
Check Windows network options carefully
On Windows, OBS lists Enable network optimizations and Enable TCP pacing under Settings → Advanced → Network as options some users report can help. Keep Bind to IP set to Default. OBS also suggests testing IPv4 Only; if it makes no difference, restore the IPv4 and IPv6 defaults. These are troubleshooting options, not universal fixes.

Check VPNs, security software, and network utilities
Temporarily test whether a VPN or security product is interfering. If the test identifies a cause, restore protection and configure an OBS exception rather than leaving antivirus or firewall protection disabled. Also check for bundled network prioritization or “optimization” utilities and current network drivers.

Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback
OBS’s dynamic bitrate adjustment can lower the bitrate during congestion and reduce frame dropping, but it does not correct the underlying connection problem and may reduce stream quality. Treat it as a fallback when you cannot resolve the cause.
Fix rendering lag or encoding overload
Free GPU capacity for OBS
On Windows, try running OBS as administrator; OBS says this can allow Windows to reserve GPU capacity for it. Check whether a game or another GPU-heavy process is consuming the available capacity. If so, cap the game’s frame rate, enable V-Sync, lower graphics settings, or reduce the game’s resolution to leave more GPU resources for OBS compositing.

Reduce OBS output demands
- Lower the output resolution or frame rate. If 60 fps is not stable, OBS specifically suggests trying 30 fps.
- Simplify demanding scenes and scene collections. Reduce expensive sources, browser sources (including their count and dimensions), and filters.
- For static overlays, consider a static image source rather than a more demanding source.
- Lower the canvas resolution only if other measures are insufficient; doing so can disrupt scene layout.
Reducing bitrate alone helps a connection that cannot sustain the stream rate; it does not necessarily resolve rendering or encoding overload. Conversely, reducing GPU load or output resolution is not the first response to network drops. Retest after each change so you can tell which bottleneck improved.
Check YouTube and encoder settings
YouTube advises choosing a quality your available connection can carry reliably, testing upload speed, and testing representative audio and motion before going live. It detects resolution and frame rate automatically by default and transcodes live streams for viewers.

For RTMP/RTMPS streams, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS. HDR uses H.265/HEVC, and AV1 is not supported for HDR. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings page for the latest compatibility guidance.

NVENC support depends on GPU generation, operating system, and drivers. OBS describes NVENC as a supported hardware encoder on Windows and Linux, with GeForce 750 Ti/Maxwell 900-series or newer support and Turing-generation NVENC recommended for best results. Consult current OBS hardware-encoding information and NVIDIA compatibility details before considering a hardware upgrade; the dropped-frames symptom alone is not evidence that your GPU needs replacing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Leave advanced NVENC controls for a confirmed need
OBS’s advanced NVENC guide applies specifically to OBS 31.0, so do not assume its options or labels match other versions. It describes controls such as VBR with target quality, Ultra High Quality tuning, adaptive quantization naming, B-frame-as-reference for HEVC/AV1, and split encode. These specialized options are not initial fixes for ordinary network drops.
- Ultra High Quality is aimed at live-action detail such as sensor noise, is not recommended for gaming content, and significantly reduces throughput.
- Split encode requires an Ada-generation GPU with at least two NVENC engines. Forcing it may improve throughput in some high-resolution cases, but can create a visible seam at low bitrates.
Confirm OBS version, codec, GPU generation, and whether the problem is network, rendering, or encoding before changing these controls. The OBS 31.0-specific details are in its advanced NVENC options guide. Older third-party NVENC recommendations may be tied to earlier OBS versions and should not override current YouTube guidance or the documentation for your installed version.

Common cases and what to try
“OBS dropped frames but internet is fine”
A general speed-test result does not establish that the route to YouTube’s ingest server is stable at stream time. Check the OBS network counter, test another available ingest endpoint, try Ethernet, and retest with other upload-heavy activity paused.
“NVENC encoding overloaded”
Start with GPU and output load: run OBS as administrator on Windows, reduce a competing game’s GPU demand, simplify scenes, or test a lower output frame rate or resolution. Do not treat a network bitrate reduction as a complete remedy unless the network counter is also rising.
Drops begin only during busy household periods
Other upload use, Wi-Fi interference, or congestion along the ISP route may be involved. Compare a wired test and a quieter period; if the problem persists, ask your ISP to investigate before buying replacement hardware.
Run a representative test before going live
- Open OBS Stats and note whether network dropped frames, rendering lag, or encoding overload is increasing.
- Test the same scene, resolution, frame rate, codec, and approximate motion you expect to use live, with representative audio.
- Change one relevant setting at a time: bitrate and network path for network drops; GPU load, scene complexity, or output demands for rendering or encoding trouble.
- Retest and confirm the relevant counter stays stable before relying on the configuration.
YouTube’s guidance is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” A short test is more useful when it reproduces the scene and movement that actually stress your setup.
