A running FFmpeg process does not prove that YouTube is receiving or accepting a healthy stream. Start by matching Live Control Room’s timestamped stream-health messages with FFmpeg’s output, then determine whether the fault is in the media/encoder, YouTube configuration, outbound capacity, or the network path. The information in the title alone cannot establish that Chennai routing is the cause.
1. Check whether YouTube is receiving a healthy stream

Open the event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and inspect the stream health indicator and its messages. Record each message and timestamp, especially during a stall. YouTube says the dashboard checks the stream sent to YouTube; red errors are critical and may prevent an event from starting or cause viewer problems, while yellow errors can reduce quality. Use the actual message to choose the next check rather than treating FFmpeg’s process state as proof of successful ingest. See YouTube’s live streaming error messages and encoder settings guidance.

Compare the timestamps with FFmpeg’s stderr and any available provider bandwidth or resource graphs. A stall in the player and a running process are symptoms, not a diagnosis.
2. Determine whether the encoder or source is failing
Check the encoder’s preview or output if available: does the picture move, and is audio present? Inspect FFmpeg’s errors and the VPS CPU load. If you configured a local archive, confirm that it is being written and continues to grow. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the encoder and local output; if these look healthy while the stream has trouble, investigate the outbound internet connection. Use the actual FFmpeg command, stderr, and build/version when investigating. There is no single log line established here that diagnoses this symptom across commands and builds.
3. Verify stream settings against the selected YouTube configuration
Check the protocol, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio/video stream count, and keyframe frequency configured in the encoder and shown for the YouTube stream. YouTube’s error reference identifies unsupported formats, incorrect bitrates, unexpected audio/video stream counts, resolution, and keyframe frequency as issues to check. Use the requirements for the actual protocol and stream configuration rather than changing settings by guesswork.

For H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps, YouTube lists a recommended bitrate of 10 Mbps. This is a configuration recommendation, not a guarantee that the VPS can sustain that upload rate.

YouTube recommends a keyframe every two seconds and says the interval should not exceed four seconds for its listed RTMP/RTMPS settings.

YouTube’s encoder guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 options. Confirm which protocol and codec your particular stream is configured to use, and follow the matching settings. Read YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and error-message guidance.
Do not switch protocols just because the player stalls. HLS is segment-based and has higher latency than RTMP; it also has separate requirements, including HTTPS, TS segments, and a rolling playlist. Change to HLS only if your encoder and YouTube stream key are configured for it and the observed error gives you a reason. See YouTube’s HLS setup requirements.
4. Measure sustained outbound capacity from the VPS
Measure upload capacity from the VPS, not download speed alone. Compare the sustained outbound capacity during the incident with the total configured stream bitrate. YouTube says total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. If you send primary and backup streams, count both in the total. These are YouTube configuration recommendations; they do not identify the cause of a particular stall. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Repeat measurements around the time of an intermittent stall instead of relying on a single test taken when the stream is healthy.

Compare the results with provider bandwidth graphs, if available, and note whether local output and CPU load remain healthy at the same time.

Check that any backup stream is included in the capacity calculation; adequate bandwidth for the primary alone may not be adequate for both.
5. Test the route without over-reading traceroute
If the encoder, settings, and sustained upload capacity look sound, collect repeated, timestamped connectivity and route measurements from the VPS toward the actual configured ingest destination, where that destination is available. Compare normal operation with the stall and include the target and test method in your notes.
Traceroute uses TTL-limited probes to elicit responses from hops along a probe path. Firewalls can filter probes, and routers may rate-limit ICMP replies. As a result, missing hops or asterisks do not, on their own, prove that stream packets are being dropped. TCP-based tracing may help when ordinary UDP or ICMP probes are filtered, but it must target an appropriate destination and port. See the traceroute(8) documentation.

6. Assemble evidence before escalating
If repeatable measurements point toward a provider-path or capacity problem, send the VPS host a concise incident record rather than assuming the Chennai location is at fault. Include:

The Live Control Room health messages and timestamps.

FFmpeg stderr around the same times, plus the command and FFmpeg build/version.

Whether preview or local archive output remained healthy, and CPU load during the incident.

Upload measurements and provider bandwidth graphs, with times and test conditions.

Repeated route traces during normal operation and the stall, identifying the destination and probe method.
This evidence bundle is a practical way to correlate the symptoms; YouTube does not prescribe it as a formal incident-submission form. Without the provider, ingest destination, command, health messages, measurements, and time series, there is not enough information to diagnose this individual stall or attribute it to Chennai.
