A “connection reset” means the FFmpeg-to-YouTube connection failed; it does not identify whether the cause was FFmpeg, the VPS, a network route, or YouTube’s ingest. To diagnose a Mumbai VPS disconnect, preserve the timestamped FFmpeg log, compare it with YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages, verify encoder settings, then measure sustained outbound bandwidth during the affected conditions. The available details do not establish a Mumbai-specific or provider-specific cause.
What a connection reset tells you—and what it does not
RTMP runs over TCP/IP, and FFmpeg documents port 1935 as its default RTMP port. A reset indicates a connection failure, not which component or network segment caused it. Confirm the actual publishing protocol, ingest URL, and port in your configuration rather than assuming they match the defaults. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension to RTMP.
Without the affected VPS’s logs, route measurements, stream-health record, and provider evidence, the location “Mumbai” alone cannot explain the disconnect. The root cause, route, failure frequency, and whether the stream is bandwidth-limited remain unknown until those artifacts are checked.
1. Preserve the failure evidence
Before changing settings, capture enough information to compare the server and YouTube at the same moment.

- Save the complete FFmpeg command, but redact the stream key anywhere the command is shared or stored outside the server.
- Record the FFmpeg version and build configuration.
- Keep the complete log around the failure and note its exact UTC timestamp.
- Record whether FFmpeg exits, retries, or remains running while reporting a protocol or socket write failure.
- Note the configured ingest URL and protocol, but do not publish credentials or stream keys.
Do not infer a specific cause from the word “reset.” Interpret the actual error in context with the timestamp and other evidence; no particular error string alone establishes which network segment failed.
2. Compare FFmpeg with YouTube stream health
Open YouTube Live Control Room and inspect the stream-health messages covering the same time window as the FFmpeg log. YouTube reports ingest status and can identify configuration problems separately from connection trouble.

- If YouTube reports an incorrect format, bitrate, audio/video configuration, or keyframe frequency, correct the encoder settings first.
- If YouTube shows healthy encoder output while FFmpeg reports a disconnect, investigate the outbound connection and the VPS path rather than assuming a media-format error.
- Keep the timestamps aligned. A message before or after the failure may describe a different condition.
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance directs attention to outbound internet strength when the local encoder output and CPU look healthy but the stream disconnects. That is a diagnostic direction, not proof that bandwidth caused this incident.
3. Check the encoder configuration against YouTube’s guidance
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings as a configuration check, not as evidence that the connection itself is stable. Its published guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Exact bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate.

These are YouTube Help settings recommendations; they are not measurements of the VPS’s available upload bandwidth. Check YouTube’s encoder table for the exact codec, resolution, and frame-rate combination in use because its guidance can change.
4. Measure VPS upload bandwidth and stability
Measure outbound throughput from the VPS under representative streaming conditions. Download speed does not tell you whether the server can sustain the upload rate needed to publish the stream.

- Find the configured audio and video bitrates and add them to get the stream’s total target bitrate.
- Measure sustained outbound capacity from the VPS to the relevant destination or a suitable measurement endpoint during representative load.
- Compare available upload capacity with the total stream bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the total bitrate.
- Repeat measurements near the failure window where possible, and compare their timestamps with FFmpeg and Live Control Room records.
A single speed test can help identify an obvious capacity shortfall, but it cannot establish that an intermittent route remained healthy throughout a long stream. YouTube cautions that upload capacity is the relevant direction and that connectivity disruption can break a stream. Its 20% headroom recommendation is not a guarantee of continuity or a provider service-level commitment.
5. Check protocol, host events, and provider evidence
Once the media settings and outbound capacity have been checked, examine other events that could coincide with the failure timestamp. RTMP uses TCP/IP; FFmpeg documents port 1935 as its default, but the actual URL and selected ingest endpoint determine what this stream uses. YouTube recommends RTMPS.

- Check whether a firewall rule or security policy could affect the configured destination or port.
- Look for host restarts, process-supervisor actions, or VPS provider network events at the same time.
- If the route or provider appears implicated, ask the provider whether it recorded a network event and request details relevant to the affected interval.
- Where practical, run a controlled comparison from another network or provider while holding the media settings constant.
These are investigation hypotheses, not established causes. A provider-specific conclusion requires evidence from the affected VPS and, where possible, provider-side confirmation. Comparing hosting options is meaningful only if the evidence points toward region, routing, capacity, or policy; useful criteria include sustained outbound throughput, stability under load, route to the selected ingest endpoint, egress and firewall policies, incident visibility, support, and cost.

Make a change only after the evidence points to something testable. If capacity is insufficient, reduce the bitrate or resolution while staying within YouTube’s current recommendations. If the suspected issue is the route or provider, keep encoding settings constant during a comparison from another network or provider. Record the timestamps and results, and repeat the comparison before attributing improvement to the change.
FFmpeg’s basic TCP keepalive option enables SO_KEEPALIVE, but FFmpeg notes that platform-specific keepalive timers are not configurable through that option. Keepalive and RTMPS may be appropriate configuration choices, but neither by itself proves the cause nor guarantees a fix for an underlying network failure.
