First find out where the wrong video appears: in the outgoing stream, or only for a viewer who paused and resumed playback. If the Live Control Room preview or the stream archive shows the wrong content, check the encoder’s active source or playlist. If those show the correct content and only a viewer sees the wrong video or position, check the event page and YouTube’s DVR playback behavior. These are separate stages, so resetting the stream key is not the first fix.
Identify where the wrong video first appears
Ask what the creator and viewers actually see, and when the problem begins. That narrows the cause before you change settings.
| What you observe | Likely area to check |
|---|---|
| The Live Control Room preview or local archive contains the wrong video. | Encoder output: active scene, media source, file path, or playlist. |
| The preview and archive are correct, but one viewer returns to a different video or position after pausing. | Viewer playback: correct event page, DVR window, app, or device. |
| The wrong content begins after a scene change, playlist transition, or encoder reconnect. | Encoder source activation and playlist behavior, then the outgoing feed. |
YouTube DVR playback and the encoder’s prerecorded-media playback are different stages. YouTube describes a stream key as the destination for the encoder’s feed; it does not select which clip the encoder plays. That distinction follows from YouTube’s stream-key guidance and OBS’s separate source controls (YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder; OBS: Media Sources).
Check the YouTube event and viewer playback
Confirm the intended live event
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and confirm that you are looking at the intended live stream or scheduled event.
- Check the event’s live settings, including DVR and automatic start or stop, if relevant to how the broadcast is being run.
- Do not reset the stream key just because the wrong clip plays. The key routes the encoder feed to YouTube; inspect the encoder’s source selection if the outgoing content is wrong.
Check what the viewer resumed
YouTube says viewers resuming DVR playback continue from where they paused. Rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours, and limits can be lower on Apple TV, Apple AirPlay, and older app versions. Viewers also cannot seek to a time before the live stream began (YouTube Help: Watch live streams).

- Have the viewer open the intended event or watch page, rather than a different stream or a regular uploaded video.
- Refresh the page or feed if the displayed progress or playback appears stale, then compare playback in another supported app or device.
- If the content is a regular uploaded video rather than a live stream, note that YouTube says partially watched videos usually resume where they were left off; near-complete videos may not. Clearing watch history clears progress bars (YouTube Help: Resume watching videos).
Inspect the encoder’s media source or playlist
If the wrong video is in the outgoing feed, work from the scene or playlist being sent to YouTube—not just the scene currently visible in the encoder interface.
For an OBS Media Source
- Open the scene that is actually being sent to the stream and select its Media Source.
- Verify the assigned file and its path. If the source points to the wrong file, select the intended recording.
- Review “Restart playback when source becomes active.” When enabled, making the source active can restart that media from its beginning; decide whether that behavior is intended for this broadcast.
- Check whether “Loop” is enabled if the source should repeat. A scene activation can restart the same file; if a different file appears, first check the active scene, source, and file path.
For an OBS VLC Video playlist
- Open the VLC Video source and verify which files are listed and their order.
- Turn off “Shuffle Playlist” if the sequence matters, and check whether “Loop Playlist” matches the intended behavior.
- Review the source’s visibility behavior if the issue follows a scene or visibility change. OBS documents that VLC Video uses VLC libraries and requires VLC to be installed (OBS: Media Sources).
For an encoder other than OBS, use that product’s source and playlist settings or support documentation. The same diagnostic principle applies: establish which media is selected, what the encoder sends, and whether the viewer’s player is displaying that feed as expected.

Preview the feed and compare it with an archive
- Before the next public broadcast, preview the outgoing feed in YouTube Live Control Room and confirm the actual video and audio.
- After a test, inspect the local archive if one is available. YouTube recommends previewing the stream, monitoring quality, and checking local archives as part of setup and troubleshooting (YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your live stream; YouTube Help: Set up a live stream with an encoder).
- If the archive contains the wrong video, the encoder had already sent the wrong content. If the archive and preview are correct but a viewer sees another video or resume position, investigate the event page, player, and DVR instead. This comparison is a diagnostic inference from the preview/archive checks and the separation between encoder output and viewer playback.
Troubleshoot a wrong video after an interruption
If the issue follows an encoder reconnect or the encoder otherwise behaves unexpectedly, check its status and logs before changing unrelated YouTube settings. YouTube’s general troubleshooting guidance recommends using a current encoder version, checking the feed in the encoder, reviewing CPU load and local archives, and checking outbound connectivity when the encoder output looks healthy. If software connects to YouTube without a stream key, YouTube says to contact that software’s support team. These are general stream checks, not a confirmed cause of a wrong-video symptom.
- Wrong file after a scene change: verify the active scene’s source and file path; check whether source activation restarts playback.
- Unexpected playlist order: verify the file list and order, and disable shuffle when order matters.
- Only one viewer reports a wrong resume point: confirm the event page and check DVR behavior in another app or device.
- Preview is correct but archived output is wrong: compare when the mismatch starts and review the encoder output and logs; the preview and archive provide separate evidence, not a guaranteed diagnosis.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want uploaded videos or a playlist to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving an encoder computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping prerecorded video to YouTube. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It does not go live from a camera.
