Start by checking which OBS counter is rising: Dropped Frames (Network) points to the connection or bitrate; Frames Missed Due to Rendering Lag points to GPU rendering; and Skipped Frames Due to Encoding Lag points to x264’s CPU workload. These problems can make a YouTube stream look similarly choppy, but their fixes are different. Watch OBS Stats during a representative test, then change only the setting that matches the counter.

Identify which OBS frames counter is increasing

Open the OBS Stats dock while reproducing the problem—for example, during a test with the game or scene, movement, and audio you expect to stream. UI names can vary by OBS version. Look for the counter that increases:

  • Dropped Frames (Network): OBS cannot maintain a stable connection to the remote ingest server or sustain the configured bitrate. OBS drops frames to avoid buffering and keep the stream playing. See the OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide.
  • Frames Missed Due to Rendering Lag: OBS is struggling to composite and render the scene, generally because of GPU workload. See the OBS performance guide.
  • Skipped Frames Due to Encoding Lag: x264 cannot encode the selected output fast enough, generally because of CPU workload. See the OBS x264 guide.

Diagnose from the counter, not from how the video looks. A CPU encoding problem is not fixed by replacing a router, and an unstable upload route is not fixed by choosing a faster x264 preset.

Fix network-dropped frames

Network drops concern the path from your computer to YouTube’s ingest server and the bitrate you ask that path to carry. YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates are useful reference points, but they do not establish what your internet connection can reliably upload.

Compare bitrate with YouTube’s H.264 guidance

YouTube Help’s current live-encoder settings table, accessed October 3, 2026, lists these recommended H.264 ingestion bitrates. The minimums shown are the corresponding values in YouTube’s table; neither the recommendation nor the minimum guarantees a stable connection for your stream.

Output YouTube recommended bitrate YouTube listed minimum
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps 3 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps 3 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps 6 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps 5 Mbps
1440p at 60 fps 34 Mbps 8 Mbps
1440p at 30 fps 21 Mbps 7 Mbps

Use YouTube’s live encoder settings as platform guidance, then test the upload speed and stability of your own connection. OBS’s connection guide, dated September 30, 2024, suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point when choosing bitrate—not a universal target. If drops continue, lower the OBS video bitrate until it is sustainable on your stable upload connection. A lower bitrate may require a lower resolution or frame rate to preserve acceptable image quality.

Test the connection before changing equipment

  • If you are streaming over Wi‑Fi, test with a wired Ethernet connection. OBS warns that Wi‑Fi can be unstable for streaming and recommends wired networking. A Cat 6 cable may be useful for this test if you do not already have a suitable Ethernet cable; it addresses only the network branch, not x264 or GPU overload.
  • Check whether a VPN, firewall or antivirus setting, or network-optimization software is interfering. Also check network drivers.
  • If those checks do not help, investigate the router, modem, cable, network card, or ISP route as possible causes. Do not replace hardware without evidence of a fault; OBS advises contacting your ISP if its troubleshooting steps do not resolve the connection problem.

Use OBS network options only as targeted tests

OBS’s Windows network options include network optimizations and TCP pacing, which some users report can help. IPv4-only can be tested diagnostically; if it makes no difference, OBS says to restore the default IPv4/IPv6 setting. Dynamic bitrate can lower the bitrate during congestion and reduce drops, but OBS warns it does not fix the underlying connection issue and can reduce video quality. Treat it as a fallback, not a cure.

Fix x264 encoding lag

If Skipped Frames Due to Encoding Lag is increasing, lower the CPU work x264 must complete for each frame. OBS explains that an overloaded x264 setup can skip frames or distort the image and show an “Encoding overloaded!” message. There is no single best preset for every processor, resolution, frame rate, and workload; OBS’s x264 guide explicitly avoids prescribing one set of best settings.

  1. Reduce output resolution or frame rate. This lowers the amount of video x264 must process. Test one change at a time so you can see whether encoding lag falls.
  2. If necessary, choose a faster x264 CPU preset. Faster presets use less CPU, but generally sacrifice compression efficiency and can reduce image quality at the same bitrate. The appropriate trade-off depends on your CPU, output settings, and the motion and detail in your content.
  3. Repeat a realistic test. Watch the encoding-lag counter during the same demanding content that caused the problem. Do not assume a setting is adequate based only on an idle scene.

Changing bitrate alone is primarily a network remedy; it does not remove the CPU work required by x264. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations should not be treated as a prescription for which x264 preset to use.

Fix frames missed due to rendering lag

If the rendering-lag counter is rising, free GPU capacity for OBS to compose and render the scene. OBS’s performance guide recommends these possible adjustments:

  • Limit the game’s frame rate or enable V-Sync, and lower game graphics settings if needed.
  • Close other GPU-heavy programs.
  • Reduce OBS output resolution or frame rate.
  • Simplify scenes, sources, and filters. Some sources can use resources even when not visible; browser sources and filters can be resource-intensive.

On Windows, OBS also suggests trying to run OBS as administrator. This can allow Windows to reserve GPU capacity for OBS, but it is a possible fix rather than a guarantee. These steps target rendering workload; they do not repair an unstable upload connection or necessarily resolve x264 CPU overload.

Check YouTube encoder settings and retest

YouTube automatically detects encoder settings by default. For H.264, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Use these as encoder settings guidance, not as evidence your local upload connection can sustain the chosen bitrate. The exact OBS control labels may vary by version; consult YouTube’s live encoder settings and OBS’s current UI.

  1. Change one setting that targets the counter you observed.
  2. Before going live, test with movement and audio similar to the intended stream, as YouTube recommends.
  3. Monitor OBS Stats and YouTube stream health during the test; review any messages YouTube displays.
  4. If the original counter still climbs, undo or reconsider the last change and test the next cause in that same branch.

A representative test matters because an idle scene may not expose rendering or encoding pressure, while an upload-speed test alone cannot prove that the route to YouTube remains stable during a stream.

Troubleshoot by symptom

What you see in OBS Likely area to investigate Targeted next step
Dropped Frames (Network) rises Upload stability, configured bitrate, or route to ingest Test Ethernet if on Wi‑Fi; compare bitrate to YouTube guidance and lower it to a stable level.
Skipped Frames Due to Encoding Lag rises or “Encoding overloaded!” appears x264 CPU workload Reduce output resolution or FPS; if needed, use a faster x264 preset.
Frames Missed Due to Rendering Lag rises GPU rendering or scene workload Free GPU capacity, simplify scenes and sources, or lower output resolution/FPS.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I tell the cause of dropped frames just by watching the YouTube player?

No. Use the OBS Stats counter that is increasing; choppiness alone does not distinguish network, rendering, and encoding problems.

Does StreamNeo send a live camera feed?

No. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos and playlists to YouTube; it does not go live from a camera.
