For a clip that starts over, test Restart playback when source becomes active in its Media Source properties. For a short blank or frozen-looking return, check Close file when inactive. If other sources or the whole preview also stutter, investigate OBS workload instead. These behaviors do not, by themselves, establish that YouTube is causing the problem.
Identify what is actually freezing
Before changing settings, switch scenes during a controlled test and observe the OBS preview. The symptom determines which setting to test:
- The clip starts from the beginning: the source may be configured to restart when it becomes active.
- The clip is briefly blank, then returns: OBS may be unloading the file while the source is inactive and reloading it when you return.
- The clip holds a frame or playback otherwise falters: note whether its audio continues and whether the same thing appears in the preview.
- Several sources or the entire preview stutter: consider a broader rendering or encoding workload issue rather than assuming the file alone is responsible.
OBS’s documented Media Source controls explain restart and unload behavior; its performance guidance covers broader resource load. Neither identifies this particular scene-switch symptom as a YouTube-specific failure. Check the preview and the stream output before assigning fault to the destination. Stop a Media Source from restarting on scene return
OBS documents Restart playback when source becomes active as restarting the file when its source is in the current scene and visible. The documented default is On, so returning to a scene can make a clip begin again.

- In OBS, select the scene containing the clip.
- In the Sources list, open the Media Source’s properties.
- Find Restart playback when source becomes active and turn it off.
- Switch to another scene, then return and check whether playback continues rather than restarting.
If the label or its location differs in your installed OBS version, confirm the available controls in that version’s Media Source properties. Check whether OBS unloads the file while the source is inactive
Close file when inactive does something different from restarting playback: it unloads the media file while the source is hidden or absent from the current scene. OBS notes that it can take a short time for video to reappear after the source is activated again. That delay can look like a freeze even though it is a reload gap.

- Open the Media Source properties and inspect Close file when inactive.
- If it is enabled, test scene switching with it disabled.
- Compare the return to the scene. If the video now appears without the same gap, unloading was relevant to the symptom.
Leaving the option enabled can free memory, while disabling it may suit a setup where a seamless return matters more. Test it separately from the restart option so you can tell which behavior changed. (OBS Media Sources)
Compare Media Source and VLC Video only when it helps isolate the issue
OBS’s built-in Media Source handles local files, including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. Its properties include looping, restart-on-activation, hardware decoding when available, hiding on end, unloading while inactive, playback speed, and color range. For a single local clip, start by checking those controls.

VLC Video can be relevant when you need a playlist or extended media support. It uses VLC libraries, so VLC must be installed; if OBS is 64-bit, OBS documentation requires 64-bit VLC. Its properties include playlist looping and shuffling, as well as visibility behavior. Trying it alongside Media Source can help isolate a source-specific issue, but OBS does not promise that VLC Video will cure a freeze.

Reduce workload if the preview or multiple sources stutter
If more than the pre-recorded source is affected, OBS may be struggling to render or encode the scene. OBS explains that scene composition uses GPU resources and recommends reducing output resolution or frame rate and simplifying scenes when it cannot keep up. A single clip symptom alone does not prove a GPU bottleneck.
- Simplify busy scenes and temporarily remove expensive sources or filters to see whether the stutter changes.
- Reduce output resolution or frame rate if the system still cannot keep up. The trade-off is lower stream resolution or motion smoothness; choose settings that suit the intended stream and available system capacity.
- Change one thing at a time and repeat the same scene-switch test, so the effect of each adjustment is interpretable.
These are performance troubleshooting steps, not a reason on their own to buy a GPU or storage drive. OBS’s Quick Start Guide says its setup wizard considers hardware and network conditions, but no specific output setting is established as the fix for this particular freeze. Gather useful evidence if the problem remains
If the settings and workload checks do not resolve it, capture the details needed to distinguish a source issue from broader OBS or output behavior:
- OBS version and operating system
- Video file format
- Whether the clip restarts, holds a frame, disappears briefly, or behaves another way
- Whether the clip’s audio continues during the visual problem
- Whether the OBS preview freezes and whether other sources are affected
- The OBS log from the affected session
The available official guidance does not map those observations to a confirmed cause for this exact YouTube scenario. A 2016 OBS forum thread titled “Switching scene freeze the media source” is anecdotal community troubleshooting, not an official diagnosis or current fix. (OBS forum thread)
