Make a YouTube product video by answering one practical viewer question, showing the product clearly in use, and recording clean, intelligible sound. Plan a few useful close-ups, edit out anything that does not help explain the product, and disclose sponsorships, free products, or affiliate commissions clearly when relevant.
1. Decide what the video needs to answer
Before filming, write down the question a viewer should be able to answer after watching. It might be how the product works, what a particular feature looks like, or whether it suits a specific use. Keep the video organized around that purpose: identify the product, demonstrate it, and explain what the demonstration shows.
Use your own experience for personal opinions. Separate observations you made while using the product from factual claims that need outside evidence. Do not imply you tested a product if you have not, or repeat claims you cannot substantiate. The FTC’s guidance says endorsements should be truthful and not misleading, and that endorsers should not make claims requiring proof the advertiser does not have. 2. Plan the shots before you record
Make a short shot list so the video shows evidence rather than relying on description alone. Google’s Production Guide for Effective Ads on YouTube recommends tight framing, lighting the set and product, showing the product in use, leveraging audio early, and capturing extra footage and close-ups for alternate edits.

- Establishing view: Show the product clearly and give viewers enough context to recognize it.
- Use demonstration: Record the product performing the task or function you are discussing.
- Useful close-ups: Capture the controls, connectors, materials, labels, or other details viewers need to judge.
- Extra footage: Get a few additional angles or detail shots. These give you options if a shot is unclear or an edit needs visual variety.
Frame tightly enough that the relevant detail is easy to see, but keep the action inside the frame. If you are filming a small item, check that the camera is focused on the feature you are explaining rather than the background.
3. Set up clear picture and sound
Light the product
Use lighting that lets viewers see the product’s shape, finish, and operation. Check for distracting shadows or reflections, particularly on glossy surfaces. Google’s production guidance recommends lighting both the set and the product; the right arrangement depends on your room and the item being filmed.

Make narration intelligible
Choose a quiet recording space and listen to a short test before recording the full explanation. Speak clearly and keep narration close enough to the demonstration that viewers can tell which feature you mean. A microphone can help with the audio workflow, but choose equipment based on your recording environment and device compatibility; no particular model is established here.
Keep the framing stable
Use a stable phone mount, tripod, or other support if handheld movement makes the details hard to follow. Check that the camera or phone can hold the framing you need, especially for close-ups and product operation.

4. Record and edit a focused demonstration
- Record the product and its use. Capture the wide view, the key action, and the detail shots from your shot list.
- Explain what viewers are seeing. Describe the feature or result without presenting an unverified claim as fact.
- Review the footage. Check that the product is visible, the important action is in focus, and the narration can be understood.
- Build the edit around the viewer’s question. Keep the shots that demonstrate the product or clarify a point. Remove repetition that does not add useful information.
- Check the finished video. Watch it through once for confusing cuts, hard-to-see details, or audio that masks the explanation.
The cited production guidance supports collecting extra footage for alternate edits, but it does not prescribe a universal video length, editing application, export setting, or equipment package. Choose those according to the footage and where you will publish it.
5. Disclose sponsorships, gifts, and affiliate links
If you have a commercial relationship that could affect how viewers evaluate your endorsement, make the relationship clear. The FTC identifies payment and receiving a free or discounted product as examples of material connections. Its Disclosures 101 for Social Media Influencers says an endorsement disclosure should appear in the video, not only in the description; using both spoken and on-screen disclosure can help viewers notice it.

The FTC guidance is U.S. regulator guidance. The FTC notes that U.S. law may apply to posts made abroad when effects on U.S. consumers are reasonably foreseeable, and other countries may have their own requirements. YouTube also places responsibility on creators and brands to understand applicable local disclosure obligations.

- Write the viewer’s question before filming.
- List the demonstration and close-ups needed to answer it.
- Check lighting, framing, focus, and sound with a short test.
- Record extra footage so the edit can use the clearest take.
- Remove shots and claims that do not help or cannot be supported.
- Review commercial disclosures in both the video and its description where applicable, and use YouTube’s paid-promotion control for branded content.
