There is no universal FFmpeg flag that fixes every audio/video sync problem. First determine whether the stream starts with a fixed offset or drifts progressively, then check the input timestamps, clocks, and output frame-timing behavior. Make one evidence-based change at a time and test with representative content before relying on the stream.

First identify what kind of sync problem you have

The right fix depends on the symptom and on how audio and video enter FFmpeg. Record your FFmpeg version and build, input types, current command, and whether audio and video come from the same file or device or from independent sources.

  • Fixed offset: audio is ahead of or behind video by roughly the same amount from start to finish. A measured timestamp adjustment may help.
  • Progressive drift: alignment gets worse over time. A fixed offset will not correct a timing error that accumulates; independent source clocks are one possibility.
  • Sudden jumps: sync changes after a reconnect or interruption. Inspect timestamp discontinuities and reconnect behavior around the jump.
  • Intermittent stutter: determine whether the issue is in capture, encoding, network delivery, or playback before changing sync options.

Playback can also affect what you observe. Use FFplay’s synchronization statistics to inspect audio/video drift: FFplay documentation.

Inspect timestamps before changing FFmpeg options

Review FFmpeg’s input metadata and logs for missing, irregular, discontinuous, or non-monotonic timestamps. Compare the timing of both streams and note when the sync error first appears. The FFmpeg documentation describes timestamp and muxer behavior, but which adjustment is appropriate depends on the actual inputs.

A timestamp offset can address a measured, stable lead or lag. It is not a general cure for progressive drift. Avoid adding options such as -copyts, wall-clock timestamping, timestamp offsets, or asynchronous resampling indiscriminately: each changes timing assumptions, and the result must be validated against the source and output.

Choose video frame-timing behavior for the source

FFmpeg’s -fps_mode setting controls how output video frames and timestamps are handled. It is a video frame-timing decision, not a stand-alone correction for audio-clock drift.

Mode What it does When to consider it
passthrough Carries demuxer timestamps through. When preserving source frame timestamps is appropriate.
cfr Duplicates or drops frames to reach the requested constant frame rate. When the output needs a constant frame rate and that conversion suits the source.
vfr Passes timestamps or drops frames to avoid duplicate timestamps. When variable timing is appropriate and duplicate timestamps need to be avoided.

The muxer can subsequently modify timestamps, so check the output as well as the input. See FFmpeg’s documentation on frame sync and timestamp options.

Use -re for file pacing, not as a universal sync fix

When FFmpeg reads a media file to supply a live output, -re reads it at its native frame rate, pacing the file in real time. It can be useful for that file-as-live-source workflow.

SABRENT USB External Stereo Sound Card Adapter, Plug & Play (AU-MMSA)
  • PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
  • WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
  • TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
  • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.

Do not reflexively apply a low read rate to a real-time capture device or live network input. FFmpeg warns that doing so can cause packet loss. The distinction matters: pacing a file is not the same as synchronizing independent live clocks. Consult FFmpeg’s read-rate documentation for option semantics.

Test the stream under representative conditions

  1. Make a short test using the same input chain, FFmpeg build, and intended output settings as the live event.
  2. Include speech and movement similar to the real content, and run the test long enough to reveal gradual drift.
  3. Use FFplay’s sync information to observe whether the error stays constant, grows, jumps, or appears intermittently.
  4. Monitor YouTube’s stream health and event messages during the test. YouTube recommends testing with similar audio and movement and checking stream health before relying on an encoder setup.
  5. Change one timing-related setting at a time, then repeat the test and compare results.

Keep YouTube encoder compliance separate from sync diagnosis

YouTube’s live encoder guidance specifies CBR bitrate encoding, allows AAC or MP3 audio, and recommends a two-second keyframe frequency without exceeding four seconds. Its sample-rate guidance is 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1 surround. These are platform delivery recommendations, not a guarantee against drift caused by input clocks or timestamps.

When audio and video use independent clocks

If audio and video come from separately clocked sources and drift progressively, investigate whether they can be captured against a common clock. Where that is not possible, a source-specific resampling or rate correction may be needed. The right correction depends on the capture devices, timestamps, and observed drift; there is no single broadly applicable FFmpeg command established for every such setup.

Common sync problems and what to check

  • Sync is wrong by a steady amount: measure the offset at the beginning and end. If it remains stable, test a measured offset and verify it through the full output path.
  • Sync gets worse as the stream continues: suspect accumulated timing error rather than a fixed offset. Inspect source clocks and timestamp behavior; for independent sources, investigate common-clock capture or source-specific rate correction.
  • Frames are duplicated or dropped: check whether the chosen -fps_mode behavior is converting the source to a target frame rate as intended.
  • Packets are lost while reading a live source: check whether file-pacing options such as -re were incorrectly applied to a capture device or network stream.
  • The stream looks compliant but remains out of sync: treat YouTube’s codec, bitrate, sample-rate, and keyframe guidance as delivery configuration—not a substitute for correcting source timing.
