To reduce GPU use, first remove unnecessary OBS rendering work, then test Media Source hardware decoding on and off. If your system still struggles, lowering output resolution or switching from 60 to 30 fps is the most direct trade-off. No single setting guarantees lower total GPU use: decoding, scene rendering, and encoding all contribute, and results depend on your video, GPU, driver, and scene.

Set up the video loop

  1. In OBS, add a Media Source and choose your local video file. OBS Media Source supports common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM.
  2. Enable Loop in the Media Source properties.
  3. For a playlist, use OBS’s VLC Video source, which can loop and shuffle a playlist. VLC must be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. A single clip does not need VLC, and there is no established evidence that VLC uses less GPU than Media Source.

Media Source also has Use hardware decoding when available. OBS documents this as using supported GPU decoding hardware, and the option is off by default. Test it separately as described below rather than assuming it will reduce total GPU load.

Find and remove avoidable scene work

OBS must composite and render the scene as well as encode the output. Every source can use resources, and some may continue consuming resources when not visible. Simplify the scene before sacrificing output quality.

  • Remove unused or duplicate sources, filters, and browser overlays.
  • Reduce expensive browser sources and filters where possible.
  • Keep scene collections manageable rather than loading a large collection of scenes and sources you do not need.
  • If the stream output is below 4K, or the video is displayed smaller than its full resolution, make a lower-resolution copy of the loop and compare performance. OBS notes that 4K media is unnecessary when it is scaled down or the stream is not 4K.

Choose the resolution and frame rate you can sustain

Output resolution and frame rate affect rendering and encoding workload. If 4K60 is essential, retain it and first remove unnecessary scene work. If it is not essential, test lower settings using the trade-offs below.

Change Potential benefit Trade-off
Lower output resolution Reduces GPU resources OBS needs for output. Less delivered detail than 4K.
Lower frame rate from 60 to 30 fps Reduces workload when 60 fps is not working; OBS troubleshooting suggests 30 fps as a fallback. Motion is less smooth.
Lower the base canvas resolution Can reduce rendering workload. OBS describes this as a last resort because sources may need repositioning and resizing.
Use a smaller source file when output or display size is lower Avoids handling unnecessary 4K source detail. The source itself has less detail; the effect on GPU use depends on the file and processing path.

Simply lowering the source file’s encoded bitrate is not an established, reliable GPU fix. Codec, decoder support, and the video processing path matter, so treat source bitrate as a test variable rather than a guaranteed solution.

Test hardware decoding and encoding separately

Compare Media Source decoding

Play a representative loop with Use hardware decoding when available off, then on. Watch both CPU and GPU utilization, OBS rendering or encoding lag, and whether playback and output remain smooth. Hardware decoding can move decode work from the CPU to GPU hardware; OBS does not publish comparative results showing that it lowers total GPU utilization for every file and system.

Consider a hardware encoder

If your system has a compatible hardware encoder, OBS generally recommends hardware encoding because it moves video-encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component. OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel QSV, and Apple VideoToolbox; availability varies by operating system and hardware generation. This can reduce CPU load, but it does not eliminate GPU work for scene rendering and compositing.

Set YouTube ingest settings for 4K60

YouTube’s live encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps. For 4K (2160p) at 60 fps, YouTube’s current guidance, accessed in 2026, gives these bitrate figures:

H.264 14 Mbps 50 Mbps

YouTube recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. For SDR, its guidance lists Rec. 709. YouTube says 4K streams cannot use the “improve for low latency” option and use normal latency. Choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain and consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for current guidance.

Validate before going live

  1. Use OBS’s Tools > Auto-Configuration Wizard to get a starting configuration based on your system and intended workload.
  2. Run a test using the actual loop, audio, overlays, resolution, frame rate, and encoder you plan to use.
  3. Check OBS statistics for rendering and encoding lag, and review YouTube’s stream health messages. If problems appear, change one variable at a time so you can tell whether the cause was decoding, scene complexity, resolution, frame rate, or encoding.

OBS system requirements indicate compatibility, not a guarantee that a particular machine can sustain a specific 4K60 scene. Test the complete setup; a supported GPU or encoder alone does not establish that it can handle your chosen scene and output.

Troubleshoot common GPU and stream problems

Symptom Likely area to check Next step
GPU use remains high after enabling hardware decoding Scene rendering, scaling, filters, browser sources, or the particular decoder and file. Compare decoding on and off; simplify the scene and test a lower-resolution source if it is being scaled down.
CPU use rises when hardware decoding is off Video decoding is being handled without the available GPU decoder. Test the hardware-decoding option on, then compare total CPU/GPU use and playback smoothness.
OBS shows rendering or encoding lag The system may not sustain the selected scene, output, or frame rate. Remove unnecessary sources and filters; if needed, test lower output resolution or 30 fps.
Playlist source does not work VLC may be missing or its architecture may not match OBS. Install the VLC version matching OBS (64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC), or use Media Source for a single file.
YouTube stream is unstable or reports poor health Ingest bitrate, upload capacity, encoder settings, or stream configuration. Use YouTube’s codec-specific guidance, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval; verify the connection can sustain the selected bitrate.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a continuous YouTube loop rather than running OBS on your own machine, StreamNeo plays uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it supports the quality of your upload up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
