To reduce audio breaks between prerecorded videos in one 4K 60fps YouTube Live broadcast, use an OBS VLC Video source playlist, set its visibility and looping behavior deliberately, and test every transition with the actual files before going live. OBS documents playlist playback controls, but does not promise gapless audio or a crossfade between playlist items. If seamless sound is essential, prepare the audio as one continuous track or use a playout workflow that supports overlap, then test the result.

Keep the two parts of the job separate: OBS handles the handoff between media files; YouTube’s 4K60 encoder settings govern the outgoing stream. Changing bitrate or keyframe interval is not a documented fix for silence at a file boundary.

First identify which transition is causing the interruption

This guidance is for a creator playing prerecorded files into one YouTube Live broadcast. If you mean a viewer switching between separate live broadcasts, the sources cited here do not establish a YouTube setting that guarantees uninterrupted audio across that switch.

Situation Relevant layer What to expect
One prerecorded file ends and another begins in OBS OBS media source and playlist behavior OBS provides playlist, loop, and visibility controls; its documentation does not promise gapless audio or a per-item crossfade. See OBS Media Sources.
The outgoing 4K60 stream stutters, drops, or loses connection Encoder, upload connection, and YouTube ingest Check stream health and encoder/network settings. These settings do not themselves solve a playlist-file handoff. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
An HLS input is being used Segmented encoder output HLS media segments form a continuous stream from an encoder; this is not the same as joining files in an OBS playlist. See Google’s HLS ingestion documentation.

Set up and test an OBS playlist

  1. Install compatible software. In OBS, add a VLC Video source and add the local video files in the intended order. If VLC Video is unavailable, install VLC. Match its architecture to OBS: for example, 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. See OBS’s media-source instructions.
  2. Choose playlist behavior. Set the playlist to play in order or shuffle as needed, and enable looping if it should repeat. Decide whether playback should continue, pause, or stop when the source is not visible. A scene change can hide a source, so do not assume hiding it leaves playback unchanged.
  3. Watch the audio mixer. Play every file and observe its audio in the OBS mixer. Check each boundary, including the final-to-first transition when looping. Use the same files, scene layout, and source visibility behavior planned for the broadcast.
  4. Test the stream safely. Run a private or unlisted test where appropriate, and listen at the receiving end as well as monitoring OBS. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health before the actual broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder settings and testing guidance.
  5. Fix a repeatable boundary gap at the media layer. If silence occurs exactly as one file ends and the next starts, prepare the sound as a continuous audio bed or use an editing/playout workflow that supports the overlap you need. Do not assume the documented OBS VLC playlist controls provide a crossfade.

Configure YouTube’s 4K60 output separately

YouTube’s encoder recommendations affect what reaches YouTube, not whether separate playlist items hand off without an audio gap. For 4K/2160p at 60fps, YouTube’s current settings page lists AV1 and H.265 at 10–40 Mbps, and recommends 35 Mbps for H.264. These are published encoder settings, not a guarantee that a particular upload connection can sustain them.

Setting YouTube guidance
Resolution and frame rate 4K / 2160p at 60fps
Video bitrate AV1 or H.265: 10–40 Mbps; H.264: 35 Mbps recommended
Rate control CBR
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds
Audio AAC or MP3
Protocol RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS
Latency 4K streams do not offer low-latency mode; use normal latency

Use a speed test and a representative stream test before an event, then monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages while live. YouTube also transcodes live streams for different devices and network conditions. OBS notes that a consistent keyframe interval can help the source selector transition between quality options; that is about rendition switching, not an audio crossfade between playlist items. See YouTube encoder settings and OBS’s streaming quality guide.

Why HLS segments do not fix playlist handoffs

Google describes an HLS media playlist as a list of media segments that can be concatenated into a continuous, decodable multimedia stream. That refers to segments produced as part of one encoder feed. It does not mean YouTube or OBS automatically joins distinct video files with gapless sound. Likewise, YouTube’s HDR HLS limit of no more than five outstanding segments concerns HDR HLS ingestion, not ordinary OBS playlist transitions. See Google’s HLS documentation and YouTube’s HDR live-stream guidance.

Troubleshoot by where the symptom occurs

Symptom Likely layer to inspect first What to do
Brief silence exactly at each file boundary Media files or OBS playlist handoff Check the audio at the end and start of the actual files, confirm the source’s playlist and visibility behavior, and test again. If continuity must be seamless, pre-render a continuous audio bed or use a workflow with the required overlap.
Silence begins after changing scenes Source visibility behavior Review whether the VLC Video source pauses or stops when hidden; select the behavior that fits the scene layout and test the scene change.
Video or audio stutters beyond file changes, or the broadcast disconnects Encoder or network ingest Check YouTube stream health, upload capacity, and the encoder’s settings against YouTube’s 4K60 guidance. A file-boundary adjustment is unlikely to address a stream-health problem.
Only the final-to-first loop transition is affected Playlist loop boundary Test that specific transition with the real files. Treat it as a separate handoff; do not infer that smooth transitions between other items guarantee a smooth loop.
OBS does not show VLC Video VLC installation or architecture Install VLC and make sure its architecture matches the OBS build, such as 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.

The distinction between a boundary-specific silence and stream-wide stutter is a practical diagnostic: OBS documents the media-source controls, while YouTube’s encoder guidance covers stream output and health. Neither source claims that a particular setting eliminates playlist gaps.
