If your YouTube stream key says it is already in use, first find out which app or service is showing the message. The phrase alone does not prove that another encoder is live. Stop any other publisher that may be sending to the same stream, then copy the current key from YouTube Studio and update the encoder you want to use. If you reset the key, replace it everywhere the old one is saved.
First, identify where the message appears
The exact phrase “already in use” is not defined as a specific error by the YouTube Help pages cited here. It may come from YouTube, a local encoder such as OBS, or a third-party cloud or production service—and those products may use similar wording for different problems.
- YouTube Studio or a local encoder: Check the current key and the encoder’s configuration. Also check whether another local or cloud publisher could be sending to the same stream.
- A cloud production or API service: Check its event and output state, logs, and provider-specific instructions. The service may be reporting a conflict in its own output binding rather than a general YouTube key condition.
YouTube describes stream keys as credentials entered in an encoder that tell it where to send the feed and let YouTube accept it. The key is sensitive: avoid sharing it in screenshots, support posts, or messages unless the recipient is trusted.
Fix it in this order
- Stop possible competing publishers. Stop any other encoder, cloud workflow, or scheduled output that may be publishing to the same YouTube stream. Then restart only the encoder you intend to use. A second active publisher is a plausible cause described in third-party troubleshooting guidance, but YouTube’s cited documentation does not establish it as the universal meaning of this exact error.
- Copy the current key from YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio → Create → Go Live → Stream, then copy the stream key and paste it into the encoder that should publish. YouTube’s documented first-line guidance for an error starting a third-party encoder is to get a key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide.
- Reset the key if updating it does not help. In the Stream settings, use Reset beside the key, then copy the newly generated key into the intended encoder. A channel owner or manager must reset a key; editors and viewers cannot. A reset invalidates the old credential for your setup, so update every encoder, service, or saved workflow where the old key is stored. See YouTube’s guide to managing live stream settings.
- For a third-party service, inspect its output or event binding. Review the service’s own logs and help instructions rather than assuming a YouTube-wide rule. For example, Sardius documents a binding error when its output tries to reuse a key YouTube has closed out, and notes a possible conflict when the same key is used for nearby events. Its guidance is specific to its workflow; it is not a general YouTube rule.
- Check the preview before starting. Once the encoder is configured, confirm that the feed appears in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview before going live. YouTube recommends checking the preview as part of its live-streaming guidance: YouTube live-streaming tips.
- Escalate with the exact details. If the error remains, capture its full text and note which product displayed it. YouTube says users of third-party software that logs into YouTube without a stream key should contact that software’s support.
Why a reset may not solve every case
A key reset addresses a stale or incorrect credential, but the words “already in use” do not establish that the key itself is the problem. If another encoder or workflow is still publishing, stopping that publisher matters. If a production service reports an output-binding error, the fix may be in that service’s event configuration. YouTube supports creating custom keys for reuse, so reuse alone is not proof of a fault; the right diagnosis depends on the product showing the message and its state.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Updating only one saved copy: After a reset, an older key may remain in another encoder, scheduled job, or cloud service. Replace it wherever it is configured.
- Assuming YouTube defined the wording: The official pages cited here explain key management and encoder troubleshooting, but do not define “already in use” as a universal YouTube error or diagnosis.
- Buying hardware to fix a credential conflict: The cited remedies concern stream keys, encoders, and service configuration. They provide no evidence that a new encoder, cable, or network accessory fixes this error.
- Reusing one service output across events without checking its rules: Some vendors document their own binding constraints. Follow the instructions for the service actually producing the error.
Or let it run in the cloud
