If YouTube reports a stream-health warning after you changed FFmpeg codec settings, use the warning’s exact issue type to identify what to undo or adjust. Check the video or audio codec, bitrate, frame rate, resolution, keyframe interval, and GOP mode against YouTube’s guidance for your ingest protocol; then test the corrected stream before relying on it. Without the warning text and your FFmpeg command, there is no safe one-size-fits-all repair command.
Why is YouTube warning about my stream after I changed the codec?
A stream-health warning is a diagnostic clue, not a diagnosis by itself. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, read the full warning and identify its issue category before changing more options. Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API reference describes warnings for configuration problems including video or audio settings, bitrate, frame rate, resolution, keyframe behavior, and mismatches between primary and backup feeds: YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.
Compare the current FFmpeg output with the setting you changed. If the warning points to a different issue, avoid adjusting unrelated codec options; changing several variables at once can make the cause harder to isolate.
Check the stream configuration
- Video codec and encoder selected in FFmpeg.
- Audio codec.
- Ingest protocol, such as RTMP or RTMPS.
- Resolution and frame rate.
- Configured bitrate and whether the outbound connection can sustain it.
- Keyframe interval, GOP mode, and any encoder-specific GOP options.
- If using primary and backup feeds, whether their video and audio settings match.
Which FFmpeg settings should I check first?
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s published encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR) encoding; and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. Confirm that the codec is supported by your specific ingest mode and that your FFmpeg build and selected encoder can actually produce it. See YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Match bitrate to codec, resolution, and frame rate
Do not treat a bitrate figure as universal. YouTube Help’s current table, accessed in 2026, gives these H.264 examples:

| H.264 video setting | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
Use the table row that matches the actual H.264 resolution and frame rate, and consult YouTube’s guidance for other codecs and settings. The connection also matters: a configured bitrate that exceeds sustained outbound upload capacity can cause ingestion starvation even if the codec settings are otherwise acceptable.
Check the keyframe interval and GOP mode
FFmpeg’s -g option sets GOP size in frames. To express a two-second interval as a frame count, multiply the frame rate by two: at 30 fps, for example, that is 60 frames. This conversion does not ensure all encoders interpret private GOP-related options the same way; verify the selected encoder’s own documentation or local help. FFmpeg documents these options at FFmpeg documentation.

Pay particular attention to open versus closed GOP. YouTube’s API health documentation identifies open GOP as unsupported and advises changing the video encoder to closed GOP. FFmpeg documents -cgop as enabling open GOP (by disabling closed GOP), so remove it if your intended configuration requires closed GOP. Confirm the encoder’s effective behavior rather than assuming a generic option has identical effects across all encoder implementations.
How do I recover from the warning?
- Read the full warning. Open the stream’s health messages in Live Control Room and note the specific issue type and any corrective description.
- Compare settings with the warning in mind. Record the current codec, ingest protocol, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, GOP mode, and audio codec. If there are primary and backup feeds, check both for parity in codec, profile, resolution, frame rate, keyframe frequency, and audio/video bitrate.
- Change only the implicated setting first. Select a supported codec for an unsupported-codec warning; correct the interval if the GOP is too long; remove an open-GOP option such as
-cgopif closed GOP is required; or adjust bitrate if the warning concerns bitrate or starvation. - Check FFmpeg and encoder option support. FFmpeg’s general options do not replace encoder-specific documentation. Verify that your chosen encoder exists in your build and supports the options you are using; local encoder help can show available settings.
- Run a representative test and monitor health. Test with audio and movement similar to the intended stream, then watch the Live Control Room’s health messages for the same warning or a new one.
- Investigate starvation separately. Compare the configured stream bitrate with sustained outbound capacity. If recording locally, verify that the local archive is growing as expected.
YouTube Help advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”

How can I tell whether the cause is bitrate or my internet connection?
Use the warning category first. A codec, keyframe, or resolution warning points toward configuration; an ingestion-starved warning calls for checking whether the stream is reaching YouTube consistently. Compare the configured bitrate with both the appropriate YouTube recommendation and the upload capacity available to the streaming machine. A nominal connection speed alone does not establish that the full upload rate is sustained during the stream.
If the bitrate appears appropriate but YouTube reports starvation, check for unstable outbound connectivity and monitor whether the stream continues to send data. If the warning identifies a primary/backup mismatch, compare the two feeds rather than treating it as a general connection problem.

What information is needed for an exact FFmpeg fix?
A safe command depends on the warning text and details the title alone cannot establish. If the settings above do not resolve it, collect the full warning, FFmpeg version and build, video and audio encoders, ingest protocol, input format, resolution, frame rate, bitrate options, keyframe/GOP options, and the relevant command (remove stream keys and other secrets before sharing). Those details make it possible to distinguish an unsupported option from a valid option configured incorrectly.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option, not an FFmpeg fix for a live encoder warning. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home; StreamNeo streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
