Treat an OBS profile backup as sensitive if it may contain your YouTube stream key. YouTube says a stream key is like a password and address. OBS documents that profiles save Stream settings and can be exported as JSON, but its documentation does not confirm that every export contains a readable key or say that exports encrypt or remove it. Inspect the particular file; do not assume it is safe to share.
What an OBS profile backup contains—and what is not confirmed
OBS Project’s Profiles documentation, dated January 14, 2022, describes exporting a profile’s settings to a JSON file for backup or use on another OBS installation. It lists Stream (including Connected Account), Video, and Output among profile settings. OBS also distinguishes profiles from Scene Collections: profiles do not store scenes.
The documentation does not specifically establish that every exported JSON includes the stream key in readable form, nor does it document encryption, masking, or automatic removal of credentials from exported profiles. Export behavior may vary by OBS version or settings, so the contents of one backup do not prove what every export contains.
Why a key in the file should be treated as a credential
YouTube’s live-stream settings help page calls stream keys “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” YouTube’s stream setup instructions direct creators to copy the key from YouTube and paste it into the encoder’s Stream Key setting. In practical terms, if a profile export contains a usable key and someone obtains it, they may be able to use that credential to send a feed to YouTube.

This is a cautious security conclusion, not confirmation that a particular OBS backup contains the key. A stream key is also distinct from a public stream URL or an OBS profile name; the key is the credential-like value given to the encoder.
How to check and protect a specific backup
- Export the profile you intend to back up. In OBS, use the profile export function to create the JSON backup. The purpose of the export is portability, so handle it as potentially sensitive from the moment it is created.
- Inspect that JSON if you need to know what it contains. Open a copy with a text editor and look for the stream settings and any key-like value. Finding no obvious key is not proof that every export format or version omits it; the official documentation does not specify a universal key-free export behavior.
- Limit access to the file. Do not post it publicly, attach it to an open support request, or place it in a broadly accessible or unprotected cloud folder. Use storage and transfer encryption where available, and restrict access to people who need the backup.
- Account for every copy. An encrypted USB flash drive can be an optional offline storage location, but encryption protects only the copy on that drive. Copies in downloads, email, cloud sync, or support tickets need their own protection or deletion.
- If you want the backup not to retain the key, use only a workflow you have verified. Keep a key-free backup if you can reliably remove or avoid the credential, then enter the key again when restoring OBS. The cited OBS documentation does not establish a guaranteed “exclude key” export option.
What to do if a backup may have exposed the key
If the file may have been accessed by someone who should not have it, reset the stream key in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then replace the old value in OBS or any other encoder that uses it. YouTube says a channel owner or manager can reset the key. After updating, confirm that the encoder is configured with the new key before starting the stream. Treat the old backup as compromised and remove or secure accessible copies where possible.

Restore convenience versus exposure risk
