Use FFmpeg’s own logs to capture connection diagnostics, and run it under a supervisor that records each process start, exit status, and UTC timestamp. This separates a reconnect attempt inside one FFmpeg process from a process restart. Logging is evidence, not a guarantee of recovery: FFmpeg’s documented -reconnect options are for HTTP, not a general outgoing RTMP publishing connection.
What to log—and why two logs are better than one
FFmpeg’s -report option writes a report containing the command line and FFmpeg log output. You can also retain standard error in a managed file. Those records show what FFmpeg reported, but they do not reliably identify every launch and exit across process restarts. Have a service manager or supervisor record each start, exit code or signal, restart count, and UTC timestamp.
- FFmpeg report or standard error: diagnostics from the encoder process, including I/O errors and output activity.
- Supervisor or service-manager log: durable evidence of when the process started or stopped and how it exited.
- YouTube Live Control Room: stream-health status and messages from the ingest side.
Comparing these timelines helps distinguish a connection disruption handled while FFmpeg remains running from a process that exits and is launched again. It cannot, by itself, establish whether YouTube preserved the viewer session or event identity.
Capture FFmpeg diagnostics
This shell pattern enables FFmpeg’s report and appends standard error to a separate log file. Replace the placeholders with your actual input and output options; it is an operational example, not a tested command or a guarantee of RTMP recovery.

Run it under a service manager or supervisor configured to log launches, exits, exit status, and UTC timestamps. Confirm that the installed FFmpeg build accepts the selected logging options, and consult documentation for that build because options and defaults can change.
Protect log contents and disk space
- FFmpeg reports include the command line. Treat reports as potentially sensitive: source URLs, tokens, or stream credentials may be present. Restrict file permissions and access, and avoid copying stream keys into shared logs.
- Configure log rotation and retention for both FFmpeg output and supervisor records. Noisy debug logging can fill a disk; use a useful diagnostic level and raise verbosity temporarily during controlled troubleshooting.
- Record the exact FFmpeg version/build alongside the service configuration so later diagnosis can be matched to the binary that produced the logs.
Do not mistake HTTP reconnect options for RTMP publishing recovery
FFmpeg documents HTTP protocol options including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, and reconnect_streamed. They concern HTTP connections; they do not establish an automatic-recovery switch for an outgoing RTMP or RTMPS publishing connection. Adding an HTTP reconnect option is therefore not a sound basis for claiming that a YouTube output will reconnect automatically.

Recovery may instead involve the behavior of the installed FFmpeg build and output configuration, or a supervisor restarting the process after it exits. These are different mechanisms and should be observed separately. Do not assume that restarting or reconnecting preserves the YouTube event or viewer session; YouTube’s cited guidance does not specify that outcome for repeated RTMP publisher disconnects.

Copy the current URL and stream key
YouTube’s Live Control Room provides the server URL and stream key to enter in the encoder. Keep the key private. If it has been reset, update the encoder with the current key; a stale key can prevent startup or publishing.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, which it describes as encrypted to and through Google’s servers. Its published encoder guidance includes RTMP/RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. Follow the current Live Control Room and YouTube encoder instructions for the applicable stream configuration.
Leave bandwidth headroom and watch stream health
YouTube says the total bitrate must fit within available outbound upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room. Shared networks can reduce the capacity available to the encoder. During the event, monitor stream health and review messages rather than relying only on local FFmpeg output.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive behavior is not a promise of uninterrupted 24/7 continuity or a reconnect guarantee.
Build a useful reconnect diagnostic workflow
- Record the environment: note the FFmpeg version/build, service configuration, output mode, and relevant host/network details. Keep credentials out of broadly shared records.
- Enable retained diagnostics: use
-reportor managed standard-error capture at a useful log level. Verify permissions, rotation, retention, and available disk space. - Record process lifecycle events: configure the supervisor to log UTC start and stop times, exit code or signal, restart count, and service-manager messages.
- Watch for symptoms: alert on missing output or progress, repeated restarts, disk exhaustion, and degraded or missing YouTube stream health. FFmpeg logging alone does not notify an operator.
- Test in a controlled stream: use an unlisted stream and interrupt the encoder’s network path. Compare FFmpeg output, supervisor records, Live Control Room health, and whether the event remains available. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring; its backup-encoder guidance suggests testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable.
- Reconcile the timelines: determine whether FFmpeg stayed alive, exited, or was restarted, and compare that with YouTube’s ingest-side messages. Treat the result as specific to the tested build, configuration, network, and event.
Troubleshoot common logging and publishing problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Action |
|---|---|---|
| No report or expected FFmpeg log | Logging option support, command invocation, file permissions, or log destination | Confirm the installed build accepts the selected options, verify the process is running the expected command, and check that the service account can write to the destination. |
| FFmpeg log ends, then a new process appears | Process exit followed by supervisor restart | Use UTC supervisor start/stop records and exit status to identify the boundary; inspect the FFmpeg output immediately before exit. |
| FFmpeg remains running but YouTube reports a problem | Output connection, network path, ingest settings, or stream health | Compare FFmpeg diagnostics with Live Control Room messages; check available upload bandwidth, current server URL/key, and encoder settings. |
| Publishing fails at startup | Incorrect or reset stream key, wrong server URL, or configuration mismatch | Copy the current server URL and key from Live Control Room and update the encoder. Keep the key out of shared logs. |
| Logs are missing older events or the disk fills | Retention or rotation not configured; excessive verbosity | Set and verify log rotation and retention, monitor disk capacity, and reserve verbose diagnostics for controlled troubleshooting. |
| HTTP reconnect option appears to have no effect on output | Protocol mismatch | Those documented options apply to HTTP protocol connections; do not treat them as a generic outgoing RTMP recovery control. |
| Repeated restarts or uncertain continuity | Network instability, process recovery behavior, or YouTube ingest behavior | Correlate timestamps and test in a controlled stream. The available YouTube guidance does not establish whether repeated publisher disconnects preserve event identity or viewer session. |
