First check which OBS counter is rising. Network dropped frames mean the connection from your computer to YouTube’s ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Rendering lag and encoding lag are separate local-performance problems and need different fixes. Start with OBS Statistics, then follow the matching steps below; without your sustained upload speed, stream settings and session log, there is no reliable one-size-fits-all bitrate to prescribe.
Identify what OBS is reporting
Open OBS Statistics while streaming, or review the log for the affected session. OBS distinguishes network dropped frames from rendering lag and encoding lag. Its Help Portal explains that an increasing “Dropped frames” counter with a yellow or red connection indicator means the connection to the server is unstable or cannot keep up with the set bitrate (OBS Help Portal).
- Network dropped frames: investigate the route between the streaming computer and YouTube’s ingest server, the connection’s stability and the stream bitrate.
- Rendering lag: OBS is struggling to render frames locally, often because scenes or other GPU work are demanding too much.
- Encoding lag: the computer or selected encoder is not encoding frames quickly enough.
If viewers report buffering but OBS shows no dropped frames, do not assume the broadcaster’s connection is at fault. Viewer devices, locations and internet connections can cause playback buffering independently (OBS dropped frames and general connection issues).
Fix network dropped frames
1. Set a bitrate your connection can sustain
In OBS, open Settings → Output and lower the video bitrate. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a guarantee. Use a stable upload result rather than a brief peak, and keep within YouTube’s stream limits. This store’s sustained upload, resolution, frame rate and YouTube Studio stream-health data are not established, so a precise bitrate cannot be specified here. Check YouTube’s current requirements in its live encoder settings.

If reducing bitrate stops the drops, the previous setting may have exceeded what the connection could reliably deliver. If drops continue, check connection stability and the route to the ingest server rather than repeatedly guessing at a higher bitrate.
2. Test Ethernet if the computer uses Wi‑Fi
Connect the streaming computer to the router with wired Ethernet and compare OBS Statistics under otherwise similar conditions. OBS notes that Wi‑Fi can be unstable for streaming; the test can help isolate the local wireless link, but it does not prove Wi‑Fi caused the issue. A Cat6 Ethernet cable is one practical option if the computer is on Wi‑Fi and a cable run is feasible. It cannot fix congestion or packet loss beyond the local network, or a bitrate beyond sustainable upload.

3. Check software and network configuration
- Temporarily test without a VPN if one is active.
- Check whether firewall or antivirus software is interfering. If it is implicated, add an OBS exception as OBS recommends, then re-enable the security protection.
- Look for bundled network-priority or network-optimization utilities that might be limiting OBS traffic.
- On a PC, check for current network drivers from the PC or motherboard manufacturer.
- If appropriate, compare a different service or server as a diagnostic. A successful comparison can help isolate a service-specific path, but does not by itself fix YouTube delivery.
OBS also documents Windows-only network optimizations and TCP pacing options, using Default for Bind to IP, and trying IPv4-only when appropriate; revert IPv4-only if it makes no difference. Menu availability can vary by OBS version and protocol, so follow the cautions in OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide rather than changing multiple settings at once.
4. Treat dynamic bitrate as a fallback
OBS dynamic bitrate can adapt when congestion causes network drops. It may reduce picture quality while doing so, and OBS cautions that it does not solve the underlying connection issue. Use it as mitigation, not as a substitute for a stable connection and sustainable bitrate (OBS dynamic bitrate).

Fix rendering or encoding lag
If network drops are not increasing but rendering or encoding lag is, work on the computer’s local workload. These steps address local performance, not an unstable internet route (OBS encoding performance troubleshooting).
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator.
- Close other GPU-heavy applications and avoid unnecessary GPU load while streaming.
- Reduce output resolution or frame rate. If 60 fps is not keeping up, test 30 fps.
- Simplify scenes and scene collections.
- Reduce costly filters and browser sources where they are not essential to the store promo.
Change one thing at a time and watch the relevant OBS counter to see whether the adjustment helps.

If viewers report buffering
Check OBS Statistics before changing the broadcaster setup. If OBS is not reporting network drops, viewer buffering may stem from viewers’ own devices, locations or connections. YouTube transcoding can offer viewers quality choices; a lower bitrate or resolution may also make playback more accessible, but should be considered alongside the stream’s visual needs (OBS guide to streaming with multiple audio tracks).
