Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteOn a Bash-like shell, read your YouTube stream key without echoing it, then use a shell variable instead of typing the key into the FFmpeg command. This keeps the literal key out of that command-history entry, but it does not guarantee secrecy: shell expansion can put the full output URL in FFmpeg’s process arguments. Treat the key like a password, avoid shell tracing, and rotate it in YouTube Live Control Room if it may have been exposed.
Why the stream key needs protection
YouTube describes a stream key as similar to a password and address: it tells an encoder where to send a feed and lets YouTube accept it. YouTube’s setup instructions have you copy the key into the encoder’s Stream Key setting. Handle it as a credential, not as an ordinary URL parameter. See YouTube Help’s Manage live stream settings and Create a live stream with an encoder.
Read the key separately in Bash
Do not type the literal key into an FFmpeg command at the prompt. In a Bash-like shell, you can read it without echoing it and then reference a variable:
read -rsp 'YouTube stream key: ' YT_KEY; printf 'n'
ffmpeg [input options] -f flv "rtmps://a.rtmps.youtube.com/live2/${YT_KEY}"
unset YT_KEY
This is an illustrative shell pattern, not a verified complete FFmpeg command or a guarantee for every shell or operating system. Replace [input options] with the options for your source, and confirm the correct YouTube ingestion URL and FFmpeg output options for your setup. The prompt suppresses key echo; the key itself is not displayed in the command you type.

What this does—and does not—hide
- Shell history: the literal key is not part of the typed FFmpeg command, so this reduces the chance that it is saved in that history entry. Shell settings, wrappers, or other logging may behave differently.
- FFmpeg arguments: variable expansion inserts the key into the URL passed to FFmpeg. Depending on the operating system, permissions, and monitoring tools, another local user or process may be able to inspect it. Do not assume a variable hides the key from process listings.
- Other local copies: the key may also leak through shell tracing, scripts, logs, screenshots, terminal recordings, or copied command text. Do not enable
set -xwhile handling it, and do not commit a key-bearing script to version control.
Use a trusted encoder integration with protected secret configuration if you need stronger local isolation, and verify how it stores and passes credentials. A shell variable by itself is not secure storage.
Does RTMPS protect the key?
YouTube recommends RTMPS and says data is encrypted to and through Google’s servers. That protects the transmission path; it does not remove the key from shell history, local logs, or the launched process’s arguments. Network encryption and local credential handling are separate concerns. See YouTube Help’s stream setup guidance.

If the key may have been exposed
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and reset the stream key using YouTube’s documented reset process.
- Update the encoder with the replacement key before starting the stream again.
- Review likely exposure points, such as command history, shared logs, screenshots, recordings, or scripts. Deleting one history entry is not a substitute for rotation because copies may remain elsewhere.
YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a stream key. Follow YouTube’s instructions for managing live stream settings if the key may be compromised.
