Plan a YouTube video by deciding what viewers should take away, shaping that outcome into a script or outline, listing the shots you need, and checking the location, sound, light, and equipment before you record. A phone and available daylight can be enough to start; add gear only when it solves a real production problem.

1. Decide what the viewer should get from the video

Write one sentence describing what a viewer should understand, decide, or do after watching. Then narrow the idea to a few essential points. This gives the video a purpose and helps you decide what belongs in the script, what can be cut, and what footage you need.

Before writing, consider how the video will open and close, where its key moments fall, and what supporting shots could make the explanation clearer. YouTube recommends thinking about camera positions, angles, and movement while planning the edit, rather than waiting until footage is recorded. See YouTube’s video editing tips.

2. Choose a script or an outline

Use a full script when precision matters

Write the wording out when the video needs exact phrasing, careful timing, or a complex explanation. A script can also help keep a multi-part explanation consistent. Keep it available while recording so you can resume after a pause or retake.

3. Turn the plan into a shot list

A shot list connects what you want to say with the footage needed to make the finished video. YouTube recommends shot lists for larger projects and notes that visualizing a project in advance can reduce unnecessary takes. For a simple solo video, a short list is enough.

For each shot, note What to decide
Purpose What idea, transition, or moment the shot supports.
Subject and action Who or what appears, and what needs to happen on camera.
Framing or angle For example, a close-up for detail or a wider view for a demonstration.
Movement Whether the camera or subject needs to move.
Supporting footage Any demonstration, cutaway, or other footage that will help explain the point.

For a larger shoot with multiple people or many locations, add a call sheet and a more detailed shot list. YouTube’s filming tips also recommend preparing before filming begins.

4. Prepare the location and background

Choose a location where you can record comfortably and where the light and sound suit the video. Check for distracting noise, harsh or uneven light, and background details that compete with the subject. Clothing should remain distinct from the background and fit the look you want.

For an exterior shoot, account for weather, transportation, and access to power; visit the location in advance when practical. Arrive with enough time to set up and leave room for breaks.

  • Check the location’s sound and lighting before committing to it. YouTube’s filming guidance puts it plainly: “For any location, it’s important to think about the lighting and sound to make sure you get a good quality recording.”

5. Choose equipment that fits the shoot

There is no universal best camera. YouTube says a mobile device can be a reasonable way to start; choose based on your goal, handling needs, and budget rather than assuming a dedicated camera is required. Its video equipment tips describe point-and-shoot cameras as simple and portable, while DSLRs can offer a more cinematic look but are heavier and take more learning.

Decision What to weigh Practical starting point
Camera Equipment you already have, portability, ease of use, intended look, and budget. Start with a phone if it meets the video’s needs; consider a dedicated camera only if it solves a specific limitation.
Microphone Distance to the speaker, pickup direction, movement, and device connection. Use a shotgun mic for directional pickup or a lavalier when a speaker is farther from the camera; check compatibility before buying.
Lighting Available daylight, shot size, room, power, and desired style. Try daylight first; consider a soft light for close-ups or a key-and-fill setup if the scene needs more control.
Script or outline Need for exact wording versus conversational delivery. Keep a script or talking points at hand and plan key moments and supporting shots as you write.
Shoot scale Number of shots, people, and locations to coordinate. A simple outline may be enough for a solo video; larger shoots can benefit from a call sheet and detailed shot list.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

6. Set up sound and lighting

Sound: match the microphone to distance and movement

In a quiet setting, a built-in microphone may be usable if you stay close. YouTube’s equipment guide says users may need to be three to four feet from the camera for best audio with an onboard mic. If the sound is not clear enough, choose a microphone for the situation: a shotgun mic is directional and can suit natural sound at longer range; a lavalier can suit a speaker recording at a distance.

Before purchasing an external microphone, check that your phone or camera supports its connector. Inputs vary by device, so do not assume a microphone will connect directly or that one adapter fits every setup.

Lighting: begin with the light you have

Try window daylight or outdoor light first. If a close-up needs softer, more consistent illumination, consider a soft light. For more control, a two-point arrangement uses a key light and a fill light from opposing directions. Background lights are optional and useful only when they suit the scene and style.

7. Run a pre-shoot check

Before recording, test the setup rather than discovering a problem after the shoot. Use this checklist:

  • Check the location’s sound and light, including likely changes during the shoot.
  • Test the camera, microphone, and lights together.
  • Choose the recording resolution and other relevant settings.
  • Charge devices and pack chargers, compatible spare batteries, and memory cards if your equipment uses them.
  • Label and pack the equipment you need.
  • Keep the script, outline, or shot list accessible.
  • Confirm permissions and check the frame for private or identifying information.

8. Film with the edit in mind

Work through the shot list and capture the essential shots as well as the demonstrations or supporting footage identified during planning. Check that sound and lighting remain usable as you go. If you are filming several videos in one session, batch the work where it makes sense; bring clothing changes if you want the videos to look distinct. Schedule setup time and breaks instead of treating recording time as the entire shoot.
