To record HD video locally, capture it directly on a phone or use OBS Studio on a computer. In OBS, set up a scene and source, choose the recording resolution and frame rate, select a save location and quality preset, then make a short test recording. The right settings depend on your source, hardware, editing needs, and available storage; an HD output cannot restore detail missing from the original source.
Choose a recording method
- Use OBS Studio if you need to capture or combine a display, window, game, camera, capture card, or audio sources.
- Record on a smartphone if the phone camera is all you need. Select an HD setting supported by the device and stabilize the phone.
These approaches save a local video file. Neither requires a single universally best resolution, frame rate, encoder, or file container: the useful choice depends on what you are recording and what you plan to do with the file.
Record HD video with OBS Studio
1. Build the scene and arrange the source
- In OBS Studio, add a scene, then add the source you want to record, such as a display, window, game, camera, or capture card.
- Arrange and size the source in the preview. Check that the intended picture is visible and framed as you want it.
2. Set the canvas and recording resolution
Open Settings → Video. Base (Canvas) Resolution is the space OBS uses to fit and arrange sources; Output (Scaled) Resolution is the size sent to the recording. Set the output to your desired HD size only if your source and computer can support it. If the source and output sizes differ, OBS scales the image, which can affect detail. Choosing an HD output does not add detail that was not captured by the source.
3. Choose a frame rate your setup can handle
OBS commonly uses 30 or 60 frames per second (fps) as examples. Higher frame rates can make fast movement look smoother, but 60 fps can be demanding. Choose for the content and hardware, then make a brief test recording and check playback smoothness and whether encoding keeps up before committing to a long take.

4. Choose a recording quality and save location
In OBS, open Settings → Output to set the recording path and quality preset. OBS describes the available quality trade-offs this way:
- Same as stream: uses the stream encoder settings; OBS says recordings cannot be paused with this preset.
- High Quality: aims for high quality with a medium file size. OBS Project’s Recording Encoder Presets Guide says, “This preset produces a high quality video with a medium file size.”
- Indistinguishable: offers higher quality with larger files and can affect performance on older or weaker hardware, depending on encoder choice.
- Lossless: uses the CPU encoder and produces very large files. OBS Project’s 2023 guide estimates around 7 GB per minute for OBS lossless recording; that is a guide estimate, not a universal rate for other presets, resolutions, frame rates, or encoders.
For more control over stream and recording settings, switch Output to Advanced output mode. OBS maintains a recording knowledge-base index that links to guides on advanced recording, formats, and standard output. The available evidence does not establish one codec, container, or bitrate as right for every local HD recording.

5. Check audio and make a test recording
- Confirm OBS is using the intended audio devices.
- Record a short sample, then play it back from the location you selected.
- Check picture quality, framing, sound, playback smoothness, and that the file saved where expected. Adjust settings and test again if something is wrong.
OBS recommends testing a setup before a live stream; the same check helps catch problems before an important local recording.
Record HD video directly on a smartphone
Set up the shot
- Select an HD recording setting supported by your phone. For conventional widescreen video, hold the phone horizontally and frame the subject before recording.
- Rest the phone on a stable surface or use an optional smartphone tripod or phone tripod with holder. The University of London’s 2020 home-recording guide recommends a tripod with a mobile-phone adapter but also allows a stable improvised setup.
- A back camera is typically better than a front-facing camera, according to that guide, though it can be harder to frame yourself. If the subject is mostly static, auto-exposure/auto-focus lock can help keep exposure and focus steady; phone interfaces vary. Airplane mode is an optional way to reduce interruptions.
- Choose a frame rate suitable for the purpose. The University of London guide recommends 24, 25, or 30 fps for its educational recording use case, not for every platform or type of video.
- Make and review a short clip before recording the full video. Check framing, focus, sound, and playback.
Allow for file size
Higher-quality settings can use more storage. The University of London’s 2020 guide gives examples of about 60 MB per minute at 1080p 30 fps and about 170 MB per minute at 4K 30 fps on an iPhone. These are device- and setting-specific examples, not universal estimates for current phones. The same guide notes that 4K files can be cumbersome.

Balance resolution, motion, quality, and storage
- Resolution and source detail: output settings control the recording size, but cannot create detail absent from the camera or source. In OBS, canvas and output resolution serve different roles.
- Frame rate and performance: more frames can help show fast movement smoothly, while increasing demands on the device. Test the actual setup rather than assuming it can sustain a setting.
- Quality and file size: higher-quality and lossless recording can produce much larger files. Consider available disk space and whether you need editing headroom.
- Capture complexity: a phone is a direct option for a camera shot; OBS is useful when the recording needs arranged or combined computer, camera, and audio sources.
- Stability: landscape framing suits conventional widescreen video, and a stable phone or camera reduces shaky footage.
Troubleshoot common recording problems
The recording looks soft or lacks detail
Check the source’s actual resolution and the OBS Base (Canvas) and Output (Scaled) Resolution settings. Scaling can affect detail, and selecting a larger output does not add detail the source never captured. On a phone, verify the selected recording setting is the intended HD option supported by the device.
Motion looks uneven or OBS cannot keep up
Make a short sample at the selected frame rate and review it. If a higher frame rate is too demanding, try a lower one, such as 30 rather than 60 fps, and test again. Also consider whether a higher-quality preset is affecting performance.

The file is unexpectedly large
Check the quality preset and frame rate. OBS lossless recording is designed to produce very large files; the OBS Project estimate of around 7 GB per minute applies to its lossless guide example, not every recording. For phone video, 4K can be cumbersome; choose a supported HD setting if that better fits your storage needs.
There is no sound or the wrong sound
Confirm the intended audio devices in OBS, record a brief sample, and play it back before the full take. For phone recording, review a short clip and verify the phone captured usable audio.

The file is missing or the framing is wrong
For OBS, confirm the recording path in Settings → Output and inspect a short test file at that location. For either method, review the preview or sample for framing before recording the full video.
