To add chat to a YouTube livestream, open the event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, enable Live Chat in the event’s customization settings, and save. You can also change the setting after a stream starts. Chat on YouTube and a chat iframe on your website are separate: an embedded video player does not show YouTube’s live chat.
Before you start: make sure your channel can go live
YouTube’s general live-streaming requirements include a verified channel and no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours. Check YouTube’s live streaming tips for current account eligibility. Mobile streaming has additional requirements, including subscriber and device rules; the requirements are not the same for every streaming route. See YouTube’s current mobile streaming instructions before relying on a phone.
You do not need a paid service or special equipment just to turn on chat. Choose a production method based on what you want to stream; YouTube supports mobile, webcam, and encoder workflows. An encoder is useful for screen capture, gameplay, overlays, or external video and audio equipment, while webcam is a simpler computer-based route. YouTube explains the available routes in its live streaming tips and encoder setup guide.
Turn on Live Chat for a new or scheduled stream
- Open YouTube Studio. Create or select the scheduled livestream and open it in Live Control Room.
- Open the event’s customization settings. Find the Live Chat control and enable it.
- Save the change. Interface labels can shift over time, and available options may differ by stream type. YouTube’s live chat moderation guide describes the current chat controls.
- Preview the watch page. Check that the event is accessible to your intended audience and that chat appears on YouTube’s watch page.
Premieres have their own chat settings and restrictions, so do not assume every Premiere option matches an ordinary livestream. YouTube’s moderation guide covers the relevant controls for streams and Premieres.

Change chat after the stream has started
If the event is already live, YouTube allows chat to be turned on or off from the event’s editing or live-chat controls. Open the live event in Live Control Room, locate its chat setting, change it, and confirm the change. If viewers report that chat is missing, check the event setting first, then verify the viewer is on the YouTube watch page rather than watching an embedded player.
Show YouTube live chat beside a video on your website
Embedding the video alone does not embed its chat. YouTube provides a separate live-chat iframe for a website. You need the stream’s video ID and the exact domain of the page that will host the chat.

- Copy the video ID from the stream’s YouTube watch-page URL.
- Use this iframe URL pattern, replacing both example values with your own:
https://www.youtube.com/live_chat?v=VIDEO_ID&embed_domain=YOUR_DOMAIN. - Set
embed_domainto the domain of the page containing the iframe. YouTube notes that a mismatch between the configured domain and the hosting page prevents the embedded chat from opening. - Test the page on desktop and confirm the chat loads for the intended stream.
YouTube documents the iframe in its computer live-chat instructions. The documented embed-chat feature is not available on mobile web; see YouTube’s Android instructions for that limitation. Separately, YouTube says Live Chat is available on watch pages, not inside embedded video players, in its live-stream overview.
Control who can post and moderate messages
YouTube provides standard and managing moderator roles. Assign trusted people before a busy event so they can help manage the discussion. Available actions include deleting a message, timing a user out, and hiding a user; the moderation guide explains the controls and role differences.

If you want only approved participants to post, consider live commentary mode. It limits who can send messages to approved users. Choose the restriction appropriate to the event rather than relying on moderators to remove unwanted messages after they appear.
What happens to chat after the stream?
Live Chat itself does not continue after the event ends; viewers may be able to comment below the archived video instead. YouTube says Live Chat replay is available on stream archives and is on by default. To disable the replay, change the setting in the video’s customization options.
